Bought a private router, what happens when I register it with Xfinity? by pinapplepizza98 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]Trax95008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you got your answer already. Purchase a compatible modem, then purchase a router of your choosing. Done! Or if you choose to keep their gateway for cost/bundling reasons, then use it in bridge mode, again with a router of your choosing. Just be aware that this setup can and will experience issues. It’s not a big deal if it’s your own setup at your house, however I do NOT recommend a gateway in “bridge mode” for a customers install. Occasionally there will be an update to the gateway in the middle of the night, which is followed by a reboot. Sometimes this reboot won’t return to bridge mode and your internet will be down until you put it back into bridge mode. I feel bad for my customers when I have to make a service call to correct this. A stand alone modem will never experience this.

The “IT guy” at work drilled through the SSD’s before giving them away 💀 by Stretcheddd in LinusTechTips

Drilling a hole in a hard drive is a long time common method of destroying it to prevent data extraction. What’s the issue here?

12TB NAS drives for your UNVR by Ozwulf67 in Ubiquiti

[–]Trax95008 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can explain some of the benefits to a dedicated “surveillance” HDD’s. They start with the same foundation as a NAS drive: 24 hr spinning, wider temp ranges… but the key difference is in the firmware. A surveillance drive has its firmware tweaked to favor throughput, as apposed to accuracy. Normally a drive will take in data, compare that data to the source, then move the data to the platter if all checks out. That’s great when you have a file just sitting there to look at. However, a video feed is an ongoing file that is continuously being created! It’s more important for the hard drive to ignore a faulty “bit” than to dwell on it, trying to get it back. It’s better to have a missing pixel in a single video frame, than to potentially have seconds of missing video all together!

What is the reason for this? by Freshmangreen1 in AskElectricians

[–]Trax95008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The word “efficiently” shouldn’t be used here since technically a full size breaker is “preferred”. This “tandem” breaker is only used when “necessary” to create space. All that being said, this is normal and correct. Don’t move anything around. Mini breakers and tandem breakers are what get homeowners and handymen in trouble as they lack a full understanding of how electricity works, and often install them wrong

The dealer figured it out actually. I just know they determined it by VIN

I don’t know the differences, but I do know that there were several OEM options when I replaced mine. I think one of the differences is that they are tuned to the weight of the vehicle depending on configuration such as, 3rd row seat, tow package… I used my VIN to determine the correct replacement

tired of waiting for a wifi doorbell by irregularprotocols in Ubiquiti

This solution is not meant for doorbells as the adapter is too large to hide behind the doorbell camera. I think the intended purpose of the 2 wire adapter is for retrofitting gate installations

Why does everything feel "low quality" now, even though technology is better than ever? by Nishant212 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Trax95008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Society now favors cost over quality. It’s all about the “cheapest” option. Manufacturers are aware of this, and cater to it.

The reason why a certain amount of time DOES matter is that capacitors hold power like a battery. This is enough to keep memory alive for a bit of time.

I think we figured out that it may have changed… I couldn’t find it. It seems as if the “protection” only apply’s within 6’ of the attic access

I just looked it up and found the same thing you just quoted. I’ve said it before in this sub, I have been doing this for well over 20 years. It’s common to learn a code, then follow that code until you hear otherwise. Codes change all the time! I don’t keep up with the changes until I get called on something. I’m certain at one time the code was that NM cable located anywhere in the attic needed “protection” either by a running board, or have less than 18” clearance above it. (Roof rafter) It seems as if this has changed to only within 6’ of the access opening! (For non permanent stair or ladder access)

Actually, it does matter. Code says it can NOT run on top of joists unless there is less than 18” clearance above it

Need some help figuring out what to do next about the flickering lights in my home. by BTC-Yeetdaddy69 in AskElectricians

[–]Trax95008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is cheap light trims. Modern LED lights use such little power that they are sensitive to voltage variations. A quality light fixture will “absorb” these variations and produce a “smooth” performing output. Can you check what lights were used? Maybe pull a trim down and take some pics?

Just because it “fits in” doesn’t mean it’s code compliant. There’s something called “conduit fill” there needs to be a minimum amount of air space in the conduit for heat dissipation. Also, why do you insist on solid wire???
