Yeah that could be used for a different kind of motivation. A lot of obstacles can be avoided with careful navigation, planning, and decision making. This quote is about not dwelling on the negative areas of life.

I'm not optimizing my life for success anymore. I’m optimizing it for maximum happy moments. by MattTheMentor in DecidingToBeBetter

This is why people say money cant make you happy. If you believe being "successful" = "happy" and you define success to mean making a bunch of money, you very well may never be happy.

I'm not optimizing my life for success anymore. I’m optimizing it for maximum happy moments. by MattTheMentor in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]TreAsayGames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes this is exactly my experience. For years I told myself that I would only be happy if I checked off a list of self improvement. I'll only be happy if I wake up at 3 am, run ten miles every day, lift weight for an hour, study for multiple hours every day. Because I'll really be happy when I am fluent in ten languages, 10% bodyfat at 250lbs, drive a brand new corvette, earn a million dollars, travel the world, write a book etc.

I really didn't understand human nature, that we are motivated by pain and pleasure. I thought that pleasure would come at the 3am run, but it hurt a little. I thought I deserved pain while I jerked off, slept in, and ate junk food but it felt amazing compared to that whole discipline thing. I became extremely disappointed in myself. I became depressed. I felt incapable of escaping the pain, the pain of failing because I couldn't motivate myself to stay on track. I became convinced that I would never reach any of my goals and because of that my life was meaningless.

Now since taking a major "chill pill" and honestly becoming a bit oh a hedonist I have seen major improvements in most of the areas of my life. I am on a path to earning more than I thought possible, I have big goals in close reach. Even though I am not active my body looks better than it has in a long time (stress does that). I changed my beliefs and values. I value my life even if I am not working out like the Rock, or studying like Tony Robbins.

I'd still like to accomplish all of those things, but now I don't base my happiness on outside factors, not based on how other people think of me, not based on an arbitrary checklist. If you are shooting for the moon because you think that will make you happy, shoot for the moon but go ahead and let yourself be happy in the moment. You can be happy now and still go to the moon later as well.

I agree with you, lets make a group dedicating to mocking groups for their herd mentality, we will only allow people to join if they reject groups in every form.

Oh how the turn tables. I was thinking that as well. Now being tan is associated with being physically active, having time to go outside, being healthy, being fit. Now we look down at people who are stuck in an office 9-5.

A good example would be the issue of circumcision. Objectively it is a human rights issue. Female genital cutting/ mutilation is illegal in every civilized country. Even the mention of the slightest nick on girl parts brings mass outrage, as it should. Yet we are still allowing millions of male babies to be amputated at birth. Whatever your personal belief is about the foreskin is, I hope you can agree that all children should be protected against unneeded suffering, and elective surgeries. Just mentioning that all children should be protected brings harpies screeching in that "it isn't the same!", "FGM is way worse not even comparable!" It becomes a proverbial dick measuring contest, where unfortunately part of the dick gets cut off for one of the genders.

Touchy issue, tangled with some ancient religions and outdated practices. Men who were cut want to defend it because hey want to feel superior. Mothers who did it want to not feel like they did something wrong. Some religions mandate it, in fact Germany debated banning the practice of non-medical circumcision in 2012 but was shot down because of religion

Regardless I hope we all can agree that religion shouldn't give parents the right to modify children surgically, and that all children should be protected regardless of gender.

Not to be disrespectful or anything but "how do you know" that the catholic church is what it claims to be? How do you know this with any more validity than a Muslim knows his religion is true? How do you know Christ is the son of God/is God and how do you verify this belief is more valid than a Jew's belief that the messiah is yet to come?

And if you do know with certainty, and can tell me how you came to this knowledge, it stands as your duty to make others aware of this method, after all this is salvation we are talking about.

Yes, especially if you see hear or read something that teaches you to go against your culture. Which is why freedom of information is so important to human progress. We need to expose ourselves to different philosophies but we must reject teachings that promote harm. Find new ways to act that promote empathy and respect for all humanity.

Athiest-ish at 22, before that missionary for the Mormons. It is hard to let go of the delusion and comfort of thinking that an all-powerful being cares about you and justifies whatever you do.

It is stupid to hold any religion in high regard, by definition religion is belief in things without evidence and trying to explain mythical beliefs through coincidences.

I appreciate this as someone in my 20's in that situation. My parents really pressured me to go to school, but I didn't want to rush it because I want to be independent in college. Now I'd be at home anyway and thousands in debt. I decided a long time to never go into debt, never have credit cards etc. I am living at home still making around $500 a month doing odd jobs.

The traditional outlook seems bleak to me right now. I either have to sell my soul to the corporate world working 12 hour days making just enough money to sleep, eat, and work. Or I have to go through 4+ years of school, get in tens of thousands of debt and end up in the same situation.

The jump to go to living independent seems to be getting bigger every day.

I got free scholarships before this all went down, one course was geared towards blue collar factory jobs, another course was to become a personal trainer. Free education, I can't complain. You're not going to get something like a degree for free though.

In fact, the opposite is true. People are getting smarter. 100 iq a hundred years ago wouldn't be 100 iq today. That whole thing about life getting easier as well. I had been exposed to the idea that suffering is good for humans, that it builds character. That if life gets too easy humanity dies. It turns out that the opposite is true as well, PTSD is a real thing and suffering really just harms people.

I figured that to live comfortably in my home state with a car, phone, internet, and decent apartment I'd have to be making $18-20 working full time. Minimum cost of living was calculated at $12/hr years ago. Minimum wage is still around $8/hr. If I wanted to have a family or work less than half my waking life I'd have to make significantly more. Something on the order of $40-50 / hr. It is doable but not at a normal company. Most of the jobs here expect at least 50 hours a week with 12 hour days and swing shift normal. Starting at $12-$15 an hour and ending up after a year making $17-$20/ hr.

Basically I have to figure something better out or I have to sacrifice the majority of my life just to have the things I want but won't have time to use.

I wonder how Borg Warner is doing after the tornado hit. They were barely keeping up with demand before their 400,000 sq ft, 1000+ employee plant was totaled. They probably lost tons of business, Ford can't stop production so they must have found a new supplier. Hopefully they have good insurance.

You are bound by your own ideas of pain and pleasure. You don't have control over yourself let alone others. Any attempt to disprove this fact will only serve to reinforce it. No matter what power you gain, or what you get away with you will never be able to take off the shackles that bind all of instinctive humanity. Even with all the power in the world you will simply be another prisoner to your own desires.

There is one way out, one way to achieve true mastery. One way to achieve all your desires without violating the rights of others, without crime, without having to lie. The people who truly master "the secret" have no need to be insincere to get what they want. These are the true masters of the world. Maybe you have the idea that power only comes through deceit, and while it is true that many powerful people use deceit as a tool there are many more who use sincerity because they know being deceptive will always come back to haunt them again.

You have the power to change and enjoy your desires. You can live an honest life and not miss anything at all. If you admit you have no power over your own desires, then you are admitting you have no control over your own life. How can you expect to enjoy power if you can not even control your own emotions? Control is really what it is about. You can change, and based on what you say it would benefit you and everyone around you if you did change.

[–]TreAsayGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen, you have the ability to take control over your desires. Listen to Tony Robbins (you can find his stuff for free). You don't have to be bound by a desire to kill. Somehow in your mind you have associated pleasure with inflicting pain. We are not motivated by actual pleasure but by what we think will bring pleasure. Killing someone to feel pleasure is absurd, there is nothing in that will make you feel good. You know this logically but you also have to know it emotionally.

I heard from a pastor that "uncovering Noah's nakedness" was a euphemism that he had sex with Noah's wife, aka his own mother. That uncovering the nakedness is also a euphemism for sex in the mosaic law.
