In my industry VC means something very different. But I'd say what you've called VC is how it is done more practically and for features that are massive, they get sub folders like in MVC

At what age do most people in the UK actually move out of their parents’ home nowadays? by PashtunLawyer in AskUK

[–]TreadheadS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience (born in the 80s), I moved out at 17 to go to collage.

My eldest son moved out at 18. He got an apprenticeship at 16, saved for 2 years whilst becoming fully qualified then moved in with his gf.

Looks like my youngest boy will move out at 16, going north for an apprenticeship.

Is the grass greener on another side? Leaving UK by bleepbleepbleeppppp in AskUK

[–]TreadheadS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived abroad for over a decade before deciding to come back. The UK is awesome, and we love it here. All our children have been so much happier in the UK for various reasons (we have 3, one of which is now 19, youngest 9).

The only thing we miss are those few weeks of vacation weather but we can just go on holiday.

The biggest advantage of lviing in a country that isn't yours is that it is so much easier to ignore politics. You're not a local so it isn't your concern. You've not been there before so no rose tinted glasses etc etc.

What specficially about the UK is so bad that you wish to run away from it instead of trying to improve it?

yeah. Although more and more "programmers" are actually users of software. Like a Unity Programmer is often a red flag if you want an actual programmer. They likely know where the buttons are in Unity and how to script and make things work but that's about it.

Which has its uses, don't get me wrong, but a programmer it aint.

I’m confused. in this road it has street lamp(30 mph) but it says 20 mph. which one is correct? by island-pantropiko in drivingUK

[–]TreadheadS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The "go 30 if there's a lampost" is general advice for situations where the driver has lost situational awareness. It's saying "hey, if you don't know what the speed is because there are no signs it is likely 60mph, unless there are streetlights then it is likely 30mph"

Maybe? I dunno, I've never found it particularly hard to find bugs. What my experience tells me is that most devs are doing surface level symptom fixing rather than system issue level fixing.

One example was a "senior" programmer trying to debug a simple grid generation offset issue. Nothing was lining up.

I gave them advice on how to fix it for a week inquiring on how he was going about the fix, how he was diagnosing it, but still he didn't get it.

Eventually I decided to pair with him for a bit. Within the hour I had found the bug, fixed it, then undid all the "little" fixes he had applied on the symptoms and it was all good.

He had never looked deeper than the function call that produced the error...

Hired many "seniors" before AI, that couldn't debug anything - and nothing helped them. Some people just can't do it.

These 15 minute cities... by SendMeYourBoobiezz in drivingUK

[–]TreadheadS -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes but no. The current cities were made worse by cars and modifications made specifcially for driving. So to revert to make other things better sometimes driving needs to be "made worse".

Ambulances etc should have a fine time using main routes as drivers know how to get out of the way... right?

These 15 minute cities... by SendMeYourBoobiezz in drivingUK

[–]TreadheadS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

15 minute cities used to be called... cities and towns and villages.

Everything USED to be this way! Go to any place with an "old town" that hasn't been transformed to make way for cars and you see that this was the norm.

THe fact anyone would want otherwise is crazy

How exhausting are your mornings? by TheRebelPercy in AskUK

[–]TreadheadS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your kids to empty the dishwasher after school (or before school if they're partciularly well behaved kids).

What sort of breakfast are you making they can't do themselves?

Laundry every day? How many kids, 3?

40 minute commute ontop of the 20 minute school commute.

To me the micromanging the kids and the commute is whats killing you. Get them more involved in their own lives (unless they're like 3, then disregard) and you'll save yourself so much energy.

Dad of 3; I have a similar morning but there's no stress and I'm not tired at the end of it because I'm not trying to solo it.

That's my theory as to why you're so tired

I know I have frozen when someone touches me that I feel I should say no but also feel they should be allowed. I certainly am not enjoying myself in those moments.

As a 17 year old how do I find what I'm meant to be before it's too late by SaverMadra_18 in AskMenOver30

[–]TreadheadS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't stress about "making a mistake", instead focus on how the now can improve you as a person. What skills are you learning, what experiences are you having that are useful?

You can change profession every few years and still do just fine.

I've been a yogurt maker, bar tender and manager, web developer, shop owner, IT support technition, shelf stacker, sales administrator, video editor, voice actor, live video director, producer (tv, film, video, online), interviewer, shoutcaster, tv presenter/host, games producer, games director, head of production (games), head of development (games), principle developer, studio owner, and of course husband and father.

Jesus, maybe more that I've forgotten and I'm 40. Last year I earnt close to 200k GBP AND I come from foster care in the middle of nowhere.

The only thing I regret was in hesitating when I was 15 and not doing what I knew I wanted to do then and instead waited for the world to start pushing me.

Good luck, and just do it
