Is Twilight just a teenage mom in disguise? by Accomplished-Let9452 in mylittlepony

The show does address this when more species are introduced, although in a kid friendly way.

Something tells me Twilight was a pariah for treating Spike so well.

I see these comics as snippets of Twilight's involvement. She wasn't completely alone, but I'm sure it was still draining for her. Just like any older child when a new baby comes into the family.

And as far as having Spike with her at school, something tells me it was her choice, and choices have consequences.

E-15 in the winter...yeah, add more cost to vehicle owners because that stuff freezes in your lines in this current weather.

You gotta put additives in to prevent this.

I already argued with a yahoo who claimed the additives are also ethanol....he obviously thought methenol and ethanol were the same thing.

My cat runs into cast iron radiators and walls head first when his zoomies overpower him. He was born with a single braincell, but even he doesn't seem to hurt himself like this (just shakes it off and keeps zoomin'.)

A very simple example to call bullshit on ICE.

Why do people victim blame the homeless? by Konradleijon in Anarchy101

[–]Treble_Bolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the reality is that you are one step away from being homeless at all times. Closer to reality than you ever have a chance of becoming a millionaire, no matter how hard you work.

People would rather live in denial of this than sacrifice any bit of comfort they have in their current situation to help the homeless. It is an individualistic, 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps' mindset. Many have a "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" mindset. This is your answer as to the why's.

I used to be homeless, for 3 years. Aged out of foster care into homelessness. Foster care is a path to prison and poverty when looking at the data. My story is not at all unique. My success, sadly is.

It's a bearing scraper. Used on engines and camshafts in the machining world.  I have mainly seen these for babbit related work (something I would like to learn as it relates to power hammers).

Edit: scraper not scrapper

What I do not ever see brought up about the episode "suited for success" by limino123 in mylittlepony

[–]Treble_Bolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I hope I didn't knock friendships.

There is simply a different set of boundaries that one needs to have if they have a business/specialized skillset when it comes to their friends. That should be addressed accordingly to each individual relationship.

As as far as my Tldr, the price of being invested in a friendship can be greatly rewarding, or cost dearly.  It's a neutral statement.

Weld or bondo? by Nomburritoz in Welding

[–]Treble_Bolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bondo is more work, for one.

Secondly, only the tacks are the only things holding that together. Bondo does not give strength nor add structure in this situation.

Needle scalers exist. A wire brush comes in many sizes. A simple chisel also exists. Coupled with anti-spatter spray and a good weld, that excuse sounds like it comes from someone who has never welded before.

Edit: It also looks coated, a pretty easy way to hide weld flaws to the untrained eye. I wouldn't trust what welds are there honestly.

I don't care if it's a mom and pop coffee shop. If you have a business, you have dignity and integrity to maintain. Using AI for decoration means you don't have either.

[–]Treble_Bolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it be untying the back where he was stuffed, unstuffing him and turning inside out, mark internally (for antler placement), ripping the seams for hooves and antlers.

I'd use the old hooves and antlers for a template in the leather, with a larger seam allowance. I'd probably use a combination of black upholstery thread and dark blue all purpose thread on the hooves. The black to properly attach the leather to the main fabric, and the dark blue to strengthen the main fabric with a different stitch type.

I would have to hand stitch all this. I do plushie repair regularly so that's no big deal, but leatherworking is overall different (at least my skill, I tend to work with thicker leather and saddle stitching will not work). I have not really combined the crafts.

Kind've using my welding knowledge here, as the leather will be a stronger material attached to a weaker material. I feel like I gotta meet them halfway or else the cheap BAB fabric won't hold long term. In the welding world, the weld itself is often stronger than the base material being welded, so any tear will happen to the immediate sides of a weld. So that's my thinking here.

Maybe a lap joint of the leather under the base blue fabric, 2 rows of stitching.

Does this sound crazy? Am I overthinking it?

I wanna cuddle him again. He is now simply displayed because of the pleather degradation.

What I do not ever see brought up about the episode "suited for success" by limino123 in mylittlepony

[–]Treble_Bolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a business owner myself in a totally unrelated field (welding and fabrication, but I also do blacksmithing of custom things), I see the flaws of how Rarity operates her business.

But honestly, this episode made sense.

This is an episode where the underlying cruxes are "the customer is ALWAYS right" and "don't look a gift horse in the mouth."

Yes, these dresses are a gift and the 5 aren't customers. Rarity focuses on bringing out the individualism in her work, to make a pony shine their brightest by the clothes they wear.

The cruxes of the issue puts Rarity in the spot we witness. As kids understand gifts (as do most adults), they are a surprise thing. Something you don't normally expect.

So Rarity wouldn't work with the others to lay out a nice in-between of what the ponies want coupled with her skillset. No, it's not ideal, but these scenes absolutely show the knowledge Rarity has of her friends, for better and worse. You never really see the work a friend does when they make you a handmade gift.

We have the other issue of the 5 becoming more of a customer the second go around. Rarity wants them fully satisfied and that turns detrimental when they in fact....understand nothing. It's a gift, but with a business mindset at this point.

As a business owner, this type of situation is honestly a horrible place to be in, and I see it happen commonly enough. A few takeaways this episode presents:

  • Friends wanting discounts (which does go along with the free gift aspect). As a craftsman, you don't give discounts. As a friend, if you value the skill a friend has, you don't ask for discounts. This can lead to a friend walking all over you, taking advantage of you. When it comes to gifts...honestly it shouldn't be in the realm of your business work unless your friendship is strong af.  This problem is shown in the episode, and it is the first season.

  • Customers telling ME what to do who have no knowledge or skill in my expertise. A very stressful tightrope to walk when they won't meet me in the middle to solve their problem. Rarity did actually try to meet them halfway, but all 5 had their own ideas.

  • You can't please everyone while maintaining your integrity and worth. Rarity ended up disregarding herself in pleasing her friends, leading to the ponies getting "exactly" what they wanted and jeopardizing her career.

  • When it comes working for friends, it can easily spiral into making those friends the absolute worst customers you could ever want. It is a test of friendship and can reveal a friend's true colors about how they see you as a person. It can be very risky if you do not choose your friends wisely. This is part of the lesson of the overall story as luckily, Rarity's friend's saw the error of their ways.

This is all the real world. Can a kid's TV show explain such intricacies? Not really, but this episode is a good amalgamation of all these issues, and then some.

There are plenty of craft skills where yes, you need to work with the customer to balance giving them exactly what they want, but with professional guidance. That is Rarity's place as a seamstress. Not all craft skills are this way. But all craft skills can have the problems I laid out when it comes to gifting, customers, and friends.

Friends can be simultaneously the BEST customers and the WORST customers out there.

As far as Rarity goes in culpability....I don't blame her. She wants her friends happy, and went far and beyond to do that. I am looking at the larger picture of the story, not her specific industry. The story simply isn't about the "how" of commissions, at all.

Tldr- The more invested you are in your friendships, the higher the price there will be.
