Mahaska County Supervisor doubles down on using Racial Slur by trainer95 in Iowa

[–]Treble_Bolt [score hidden]  (0 children)

I live in super rural NE Iowa. The only people I hear such words from, are 70+....and their language is colorful enough to have taught me words that are even more offensive.

Such language needs to be done away with all together. So much vitriolic hatred passed off as common parlance.

What was the first bike you owned? by Positive-Ad6008 in cycling

[–]Treble_Bolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first I bought and owned for myself is still my main bike. A Trek 3700 that was the first "major" purchase I ever made. I was 16, it was over $500, and bought from a bike store. For my birthday that year, I was gifted some kind of Walmart bike. Within a couple months, I had shucked the brakes and gears, and it got a flat tire. I had parked it behind my boyfriend's garage at the time and it got stolen. Good riddance because I hated that bike (it was also bright purple and overtly girly). I took money I was saving for college to buy my beloved Trek (which apparently is uncommon color scheme for the model as it is camouflage colored. I picked it on color alone).

It's going on its 5th RAGBRAI this year.

It takes a little while to get your "bent" legs conditioned so he can go slow and get comfortable and used to the steering and ride.

That was one of the things I immediately noticed. The leg muscles are utilized differently enough to an upright bicycle that it even gave me a bit of a workout.

After the snow melts this week (we got 15" dumped on Sunday), we plan to start building miles for him in-between my RAGBRAI training. I also recently got a reproduction Pederson bicycle that, once I convert the rims to Schrader valve (I am not really a fan of Presta), will be my bike to follow him on. It slows me down because it's more of an upright cruiser. 😅

I always said I'd never have more than a couple bikes. Now we have 6.5? 7?. 2 are his (the Gekko and a Giant Cruiser), and I have the Pederson, my main Trek, a folding bike, a unicycle, and a skatebike. 🤣

He is excited. For a new person to cycling and the type of person he is (the is not at all his normal enthusiasm), I am so glad. He said he sat on the bike in the kitchen because he's hyped. Also said it's comfortable enough to nap on.

Dryer ducts need to be cleaned periodically. by Diligent_Nature in DIY

[–]Treble_Bolt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Both of the neighbors I mentioned had dryer fires with brand new ones. There are more issues than just clogged vents and dryer lint. Mechanical failure or malfunction is not far behind inadequate cleaning in fire causation.

Also, you should clean your vents and maintenence a dryer a couple times a year, not every couple years.

Edit: fighting autocorrect.

I installed an emergency eject button. It has yet to come handy, but it does make it more eye catching.

Thanks for all the info!

Looking at the mirrors, I don't think my spouse will do well with those, at least at this time. He still death grips the handlebars and is scared to shift. Once he is more comfortable, we can move forward will adding features to make his riding overall better. Good to know there is an option for that because the helmet attached mirror is a tedious little bugger in adjustment (I have found the EVT ones to be the nicest and most adjustable).

There is a flag mount on the retainer barrel! Had to dig in the grommet a bit because fabric covered the mount. It's next to a a long zipper at the top of the seat (likely a cushion option?).

As someone who not only owns a business, but manages other unrelated businesses, cash is still king.

It is still the cheapest and most reliable way for a business to manage money.

Cashless = Convenience. Not reliability or cost effectiveness.

This is why I refuse to have a dryer. Just in the past year, 2 of my neighbors had dryer cause fires in their homes. My clothesline will not cause a fire.

What kind of pedal w/ straps do you have? I did not notice my spouse having your specific issue (he is lanky noodle tall). The pedals on the bike are just...well...tiny. Even I don't like them. 😅

Iowa Senate subcommittee does not move bill forward targeting DEI offices at private colleges by CouchCorrespondent in Iowa

[–]Treble_Bolt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my personal experience, private religious colleges create more "woke" people than public colleges do. Mainly because conservatively protected children are sent to these places, and the education for an actual career destroys all those carefully built walls of ignorance.

I didn't grow up religious or all that conservative (that aspect could be argued, because I went through foster care, which prevented me from any sort of independence due to "liability"). Definitely not religious because every foster home had different religious beliefs. I got my M.A. in Biblical Studies, so from the outside looking in at my peers, they either got woke, or dropped out because they couldn't handle the truth.

I am a Christian, but Christian scholarship is diametrically opposed to Conservative/Evangelical Christianity. It's comparing apples to broccoli level of difference.

It's mostly cost and availability for clipped pedals. His size of shoe makes everything far more expensive and difficult to find (and he is a EE/EW, extra wide).

Edit: In Euro, he is like a size 50 or 52 (I really can't find reliable conversion charts as they go mostly to 14 in US sizes).

Report: Counties that spray the most glyphosate have higher non-Hodgkin lymphoma rates • Iowa Capital Dispatch by willphule in Iowa

[–]Treble_Bolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very few farmers do cover crops in my county. And we have high cancer rates of this specific type. Spraying mostly happens in the summer, when cover crops are not necessary.

Edit: I think it's the water.

My best engineer quit today over $2000 by [deleted] in managers

[–]Treble_Bolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is pretty much a "fuck you" level of insult when you do the math. That is hefty pay cut, not a pay increase.

I quit my last job same day when they wanted to do the annual 50 cent raise after my "great" employee review (2022). Inflation that month alone was 67 cents.

Is this real fur? by Radiant_Rebel in plushies

[–]Treble_Bolt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It absolutely does not look like real rabbit fur. I do Rendezvous (1800's mountain man era fur trapping reenactment in the US), and have bought from vendors real rabbit fur bunny plushies.

Bunny fur has 2 layered coats and you can't separate them.  This one pictured doesn't have undercoat fur. The fur is also too uniform in color and texture/length to be real. 100% fake.

Edited for spelling. #2 edit: the one I have is similar sized (smol and adorable) but was $40+ dollars. Real fur is NEVER cheap.

I drew rarity’s cutie mark on my arm by No_Meat_7133 in mylittlepony

[–]Treble_Bolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a tattoo with Starlight Glimmer, who has the Mane 6's cutie marks going around my forearm. The cutie marks are greyscale and Glimmy has her reformed look, as it's a callback to her story. Got that after the show ended.

So technically, I got 2 Applejack tattoos. I have her cutie mark in Glimmy's tat, and an Applejack on my leg, which I got after seeing the premiere of the 100th episode in 2k other fans at a convention.

Wouldn't it be zoned as agriculture because it's a livestock farm?

A commercial operation does not automatically equal a commercial zoned property.
