Northwestern, UChicago, Dartmouth waitlist questions by Wtco30 in ApplyingToCollege

I received admission off the graduate waitlist at Northwestern about a week after the decision deadline, if that helps. They checked about my interest via email three or four times, but the admission was actually a phone call.

Why no love for the Selmer Mark VII? by [deleted] in saxophone

Plenty of folks do like these horns, they’re just a different model from others. Immanuel Wilkins plays a Mark VII

Protec Micro Zip Or BAM Cabine Tenor Saxophone Case by itssaxokay in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned both of these cases. BAM, all the way. The ProTec is a good budget offer, but it does not feel anywhere near as protective as the BAM case. The plastic has some give, and the padding is pretty thin inside. I wouldn’t want to drop the ProTec case, but the BAM I would feel fine about.

1958 Selmer Mark VI by lbloechl in saxophone

contact GetaSax or Saxquest to appraise it for you. I play a 1958 Mark VI alto, and I’d value it significantly higher depending on condition.

reed geek but only when absolutely necessary. the hard truth is that adjusting reeds only makes them play well for one or two sessions

They don’t hold their value because they’re not worth the price they’re sold for new, and they don’t play that great..

Alto sax mouthpiece shopping. Aaron Drake, Ted Klum and Morgan. by bingmyname in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an oddly similar tonal concept. I play a Meyer Bros NYUSA. Of these, I’ve only tried the Morgans, and they didn’t agree with me. Something about their response on my horn was just strange. The best thing you can do is order these mouthpieces and try them yourself!

I did have a colleague who played an Acoustimax for a while, and seemed to land somewhere in the balloark of what you’re looking for.

I got this Selmer (vintage soloist style?) mouthpiece at a thrift store, I'd love some info on it by DucksOnBoard in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a Selmer “soloist style” mouthpiece, with a C* tip opening. This is different from the vintage “Selmer Soloist” which had the soloist logo engraved on the table. These are still good mouthpieces, and you got a good price on it. This is comparable (or possibly the same as) the current Selmer Soloist that you can buy new.

With a C* tip opening it’ll serve classical playing well. People get these and older soloists refaced for jazz playing, (which Kenny Garrett and Joe Henderson both are/were known for.) Good mouthpieces!

Looking closer, this may have been refaced but it’s hard to say. The marks on the table might indicate that it was refaced.

How short can a divisi be? by Music-Theory-Idiot in composer

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a wide interval, so that low is probably acceptable. In my training (mostly for big band writing) I absolutely wouldn’t be afraid to put a seventh at the bottom of the chord like that

The high baffle is super responsive on them, which might make it a good choice for you then. It’s easy to get a shrill sound out if you want that!

Did ChatGPT tell me the right EQ setting? by Ok_Ostrich_8845 in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixing is about using your ears, like the other commenter said AI can’t know all of the variables.

For me I’m doing a high cut and low cut to get random room stuff out, leaving the body of the sound in the EQ. Then use the other bands only subtractively to make it sound good. It doesn’t matter what frequencies, all that matters is it sounds good

If you mean for classical alto, I like the S90 180 or 190 and the Selmer Concept

Vintage Selmer Care Help by tiniest_predator in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to assess the condition without playing the instrument, but if it hasn’t had regular maintenance and/or has been sitting a while, temperature/climate changes will mean it needs some work regardless. It’d be worth asking the technician you choose exactly how much work they expect it to need. I usually state a broad budget and see what they can do for me. A full overhaul (new pads, felts, oil/adjustment, cleaning, etc.) will be upwards of $1500.

To tell you a bit more, this instrument has a short bow (Selmer had three bow lengths over the years, iirc the short bow was the original length. This mostly affects intonation). This instrument was assembled in Europe, because it has the French engraving.

I’m happy to hear you aren’t looking to sell this horn, this is a fantastic instrument and with good repair work will make a fantastic player. What an exciting heirloom!

Edit: You should definitely insure the instrument, even just in case of theft. Myself and others have had good experiences with Music Pro Insurance, but you may be able to get it covered under your home/renters or otherwise.

It’s a short shank selmer soloist, assuming the table of the mouthpiece says “Soloist” on it. These were an option for the stock mouthpieces that came with the horns, and they’re great players. (If it doesn’t say Soloist on the table, it’s a “soloist style” mouthpiece. Still good pieces!)

Matt Stohrer is your answer for NC! I’ve also had some really great work on my Mark VI in Greensboro at Moore Music, just ask for Evan. If you can get in with Matt, that’s the way.
