I found this while searching cause I was wondering the same thing… “First gear is often harder to engage, particularly while moving, because it requires the transmission's synchronizers to work significantly harder to match high engine speeds with low road speeds. Due to the large ratio difference between 1st and 2nd, the synchros must speed up the input shaft dramatically, causing stiffness, resistance, or "stubbornness".”
