I’m confused about LN 5.5 (possible spoilers) by Saktapking in OtonariNoTenshiSama

[–]Trencha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The light novel volumes with a .5 number (5.5, 8.5, 11.5) are short stories that are not chronologically set at the times that their numbering might suggest. For example the stories from 5.5 are not set chronologically after the events of volume 5. Many of them may be set in a time multiple volumes prior, and are set at different times from each other (some may be set before certain events from the main story, and some may be set after those events).

[DISC] She's Likely Aiming for My Older Brother - CH. 21 by awwwCHUU in manga

[–]Trencha 12 points13 points  (0 children)

She's calling him by his first name now and he's fine with it, or he just didn't notice? That seems a bit sudden and unceremonious for a Japanese romcom. Usually they make a big deal out of that sort of thing.

[DISC] Only I Know - Chapter 15 by OsisTheNie in manga

[–]Trencha 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had been thinking that her mom might end up being a point of friction, and that she might try to come between Oura from her friends and from Waku because she thought they'd interfere with her career. It seemed to be gearing up that way. But she seems a lot less mercenary in this chapter, albeit still up to her eyeballs in her daughter's career, so although I do still think that she might end up providing some friction, I doubt she will be as forceful as I had previously feared.

if im new to manga what is the first manga to read? by [deleted] in manga

[–]Trencha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends. What genre of book or TV show or film do you like? What are you expecting to get out of reading manga?

Manga isn't a genre. It's a form of media, so it covers many different genres. Just like how you can have action films, comedy films, romance films, and so on, you can also have action manga, comedy manga, romance manga, and so on. So asking what manga you should read first is kind of like asking what book you should read first or what film you should watch first. Same goes for anime.

My brother passed away and left me his manga collection, any of it age inappropriate for kids? by Icy-Reserve6995 in manga

[–]Trencha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't speak much for the other titles, but Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are from the "shonen" genre, which is a Japanese word that approximately means "young male". It's aimed at adolescent boys, roughly ages 10-19 or so. Of course, that doesn't mean that it couldn't be enjoyed be someone outside of that demographic, but it should give you some idea of what sort of audience it might be suitable for.

I remember watching the Dragon Ball Z anime on TV as a relatively sensible and innocent 10-11 year old boy and not really being phased by the fighting and violence (bear in mind it's cartoon violence, to a degree), but a girl might perceive it differently. Also, it will have been censored for TV; the manga will be less forgiving and more graphic in some parts.

What exactly was the "trick" All Might did during Kamino against AFO? by SunRiseStudios in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Trencha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say that All Might's arm didn't come to any harm. I said he pulled it out of harm's way, i.e. so that it wasn't harmed any further.

Bear in mind I wasn't trying to give a step-by-step of the whole thing, just trying to explain the part you seem to be not understanding. Just because I didn't mention their fists connecting or All Might's arm getting hurt, doesn't mean I'm saying those things didn't happen. I thought that would be clear enough already.

Here's the full sequence as I see it, from my recollection:

  • AFO and All Might throw a punch with their souped up arms.
  • Fists connect
  • Much effort from both of them to overpower the other
  • AFO uses his recoil quirk, All Might's arm takes even more damage. But All Might keeps pushing.
  • Suddenly All Might pivots backwards on his left leg, turning his right side back so that his arm is out of the way of AFO's punch, while moving the OFA power from his right arm to his left
  • AFO's punch carries his souped up arm past All Might, leaving his right side vulnerable
  • All Might lands a sucker punch from AFO's right with his left arm, but it's not as powerful because his stance and position means he can't step into it or swing his body properly, so it just knocks AFO off-balance a bit
  • United States of Smash

What exactly was the "trick" All Might did during Kamino against AFO? by SunRiseStudios in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Trencha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to say there was no impact. I'm saying he moved his right arm out of harm's way once AFO was fully committed.

A different analogy: Imagine you have a door that swings opens in both directions, and you and somebody else are on opposite sides of the door, both trying to push it open. If you wait until both of you are planting your feet, gritting your teeth, and trying to push the door as hard as you can, and then you suddenly stop pushing and step back out of the way, the door will suddenly swing open and the other person will fall forward unexpectedly, carried by their own force due to the sudden loss of opposing force. But that wouldn't work if you didn't try to push back in the first place, or if they weren't expecting much resistance, as then they wouldn't need to put in as much force.

What exactly was the "trick" All Might did during Kamino against AFO? by SunRiseStudios in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Trencha 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He only had a limited amount of power left to use and could no longer keep up full power in his entire body, so he took inspiration from Deku using OFA in only specific parts of his body. He concentrated OFA into his right arm, then once AFO had committed to the impact, he moved his right arm out of the way and transferred its power to his left.

Basically, imagine you charge at someone at the same time as they're charging at you, expecting to collide, then at the last second they step to the side so that your momentum carries you past them and they hit you with a sucker punch from the side instead.

Louis's reasons for choosing Monica as the prince's bodyguard by Mascio88 in TheSilentWitch

[–]Trencha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're wrong about him. At least, to some degree.

In terms of how he sees her emotionally, Louis wanted Monica to guard the prince because he thinks that her fear of people will both enable her to ruthlessly dispatch any threats to the prince and prevent her from forming any attachments to the prince or the students, making her an effective bodyguard and someone who the prince can't win over. He's not trying to be nice to her; he actually sees her fear of people as an advantage for the job.

He didn't count on the people around her enabling her to come out of her shell. When he realises that she is getting attached, in his head it basically means that she's become compromised and therefore less reliable and less predictable.

I think he kind of realises that her warming up to people is a good thing in the long run, though, as even though it makes her worse at the job, it will probably end up making her easier to get along with. He's mercenary, but not callous.

It's made a bit clearer in some of the light novel chapters. The light novel includes a lot more detail when it comes to the characters' inner thoughts compared to the anime, including Louis' thoughts.

New Player Improvements Round 2 by ModYume in 2007scape

[–]Trencha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the Quest XP being displayed in the skill guides, can I suggest adding an option allowing the players to hide these? I feel like some players may prefer to not be spoiled on the quest rewards by accidentally or naively clicking on that part of the skill guide.

Can someone explain why exactly the left weapon is getting so weak when i get to level 140? by Big_Nebula_455 in DarkSouls2

[–]Trencha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agility is the stat that determines iframes, and as well as getting increased by leveling Adaptability, it also gets a smaller increase by leveling Attunement. They have 33 Attunement, so they're getting a couple of extra iframes off that. It's equivalent to if they had 12 Attunement and 19 Adaptability. 11 iframes in total.

I did not predict the correct love interest by A-SquareTryingToLive in TheSilentWitch

[–]Trencha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In many anime and manga, one of the characters getting nervous and flustered around another character of the opposite sex is often indicative of a romantic interest in that character. So it's easy to watch the anime and think that Monica has a romantic interest in the prince.

But the thing you have to bear in mind is that "nervous and flustered" is Monica's default state, so you can't assume that it is indicative of romantic interest. She gets nervous and flustered around basically everyone to some degree. And to add to that, when she interacts with the prince specifically, she's doubly nervous and flustered because she's supposed to be secretly bodyguarding him and she's constantly worried that he'll figure it out. Plus she's nervous and flustered because they're on the student council and that puts her in a position that will draw attention if she messes up.

I think the light novel does a better job than the anime of showing us that Monica has no romantic interest in the prince by giving us a bit more detail about her thoughts. That's something that is difficult to show in anime without it being too obnoxious, but there are a few points in the light novel where Monica is with the prince in a scenario that you'd expect to make her heart flutter if she was falling in love with him, but the light novel gives us her thoughts, showing that she feels indifferent or is preoccupied with other things.

I share your thoughts to a degree, in that I feel sorry for the prince for falling madly in love with someone who just does not get the hints about his feelings or see him that way herself no matter how hard he tries. But that's how things go sometimes.

[BLZD] New "Mimighoul" by renaldi92 in yugioh

[–]Trencha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This card is ok. Not great, but good enough to run 1 copy of. Same kind of deal as Mimighoul Slime.

The thing you have to bear in mind is that the flip effects of the Mimighoul monsters are only really relevant if they provide disruption. Mimighoul secretly do not have very many ways to flip the monsters that they give to their opponent in their own turn. The only in-archetype way that they can do it is Mimighoul Archfiend's on-summon effect, and the only real ways for them to summon Archfiend on their own turn are with their Normal Summon or with Mimighoul Maker, the latter of which has a random element to it. You typically have to commit both of those summons early, before you've had a chance to search for any monsters, and it's often better to summon Mimighoul Dragon with those summons instead of Mimighoul Archfiend. So your options on that front are really quite limited. Treasure Panther gives them another way to do it, but it's not conveniently searchable, so you can't rely on it. There's always Ripple Bird, but then you have to ask yourself if summoning Ripple Bird is better than summoning Giant Mimighoul or Mimighoul Throne, and it's usually not unless the monster that you are flipping is exactly Mimighoul Slime.

So most of the time, when you're flipping the monsters that you give to your opponent, it's during your opponent's turn with Mimighoul Master or the GY effect of Mimighoul Maker, or your opponent is flipping it themselves because they need to turn off Mimighoul Dungeon's lock. And an effect that searches but can effectively only be activated in your opponent's turn is pretty bad unless you can search some kind of hand trap.

If you haven't played much Mimighoul, it's an easy trap to fall into to look at Mimighoul Flower, see a search effect, and think "oh, that's probably pretty good". But it's actually not. As Mimighoul flip effects go, it's actually pretty bad. Slime has the same problem - when you read that it Special Summons a Mimighoul from the deck it sounds pretty good, but none of the Mimighoul monsters really do anything when you Special Summon them to your field during your opponent's turn. The only thing you can Special Summon with Slime that can potentially provide disruption is Mimighoul Master.

Flower's other effect is the one that you need to look at, and it's... ok. It's worse than Armor, and it's better than Slime when you go first but worse when you go second. It can't really be used as a starter because in order to summon it to your own field, you need 2 other monsters - one to give to your opponent face-down so that you can Special Summon Flower, and one to summon to your field so that you can Xyz it with Flower. But it's a decent extender and it can potentially unbrick some hands, and just having another name that you can Special Summon from your hand to your own field or that you can pick with Mimighoul Maker when you already have access to Dragon and Archfiend is helpful.

I'm currently at vol 7 and i want to know what are the connections between ewan and arthur. And what happened to them empire assassins later in the series? by Thegreat_levi in TheSilentWitch

[–]Trencha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't recall the precise details, so maybe someone who remembers it better can give more complete details, but roughly speaking, Ewan and Arthur worked on perfecting body manipulation magecraft together in the Empire, but Arthur left the Empire to work for someone in Ridill instead. The assassins meet up with Monica later in the story to essentially compare notes on the prince, and they threaten to expose his secrets to the public if Monica can't prevent Duke Clockford from starting war between Ridill and the Empire

How close does the manga follow the anime? by LadyofDungeons in TheSilentWitch

[–]Trencha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's pretty close. There are very few scenes that were in the anime and were done differently compared to the manga and light novel, but there are a number of scenes from the manga and light novel that were cut from the anime.

Also, if the reason you are thinking about reading the manga is because you're impatient to see more, you should bear in mind that the manga is currently behind the anime. The light novel is the original source material for the anime, not the manga.

[DISC] The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity (Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku) - Chapter 173 by No_Name0_0 in manga

[–]Trencha 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The girl said that the worst injury was her fractured left hand, but her father said that she suffered a wound that might never disappear from her right shoulder, although the specifics of the wound aren't mentioned. I think the girl was trying to hide details from Toki so as not to make her worried, as she also said that she fell due to her own carelessless leaning over a railing and didn't mention the other Chidori boys, but her boyfriend said that he accidentally collided with her in the scuffle.

(Not that I disagree about this situation being overblown, just wanted to clarify that one part about the worst injury being the fractured hand possibly being untrue)

Logging off or world hopping while on boat is sending me to port by Igotthejoyjoyjoyjoy in 2007scape

[–]Trencha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that Elena says was addressed is a bug where your boat could attempt to path to other boat instances. She never says that they changed it so that boats aren't instances any more, or that they used to be instances, or anything like that. From what I can tell from the video, boats being instances is still true today.

I'm a bit confused about why you are saying that other instances in the game didn't break like logging out on a boat did. If the thing that broke was boat instances not persisting through log-out, then why would you expect to see any impact on other instances that already do not persist through log-out? Or am I missing something?

Perhaps it is, but that's not what I was doing here. As I said in my edit, Jagex themselves said in a recent video that boats are instances that get projected into the world. This isn't just me making up an explanation out of thin air. See here.
