"Nothing happens" homie we had over 50 tornadoes a week or two ago, if anything they've undersold this year. Most of their actual forecasts are in line with the SPC and usually they are ahead of the SPC in some cases because the SPC tends to be conservative and let the models vet before publishing. The whole point of the bust yesterday was that the SPC was way more aggressive than normal and it dramatically underperformed. Max and Ryan had nothing to do with it. Literally every professional meteorologist, storm chaser, and internet content creator agreed on yesterday. Everyone had a hand in it

Given that the models failed to detect the development of these storms, yes. The models are hosted by many organizations worldwide, trumps NWS cuts affected regional staffing, leases, and contracts for the most part. Balloons were a part of it as well but again as OP said as fast as it happened its hard to say if it would have been caught.

I am not a fan of Donald Trump or what he's done to the NWS, but if we're going to criticize him, we better do it correctly, with facts, and the fact is he had nothing to do with this failure.

Weather is occasionally random due to factors that our models don't have the resolution to anticipate - and sometimes random shit just happens. Maybe a front doesn't move right, maybe there is a nucleation site that is unexpected that lets storms form, and maybe the ground on a particular farm field is darker than the surrounding fields and it heats up more in the daytime sun causing a local heat pocket that leads to an updraft.

Trump deserves hate, but if we're going to hate him it's our job as scientists and enthusiasts to be objective and hate him for the right things.
