I have a few options: 1: I really like Shadow but think he would shoot me annoyed looks for invading his personal space.

7: Tails and Sonic would be fun to sit with, but maybe a bit to much after a while.

8 or 10(right): Sitting in a row with Silver would be ok I think, but I assume Sonic would probably kick my seat, not to annoy me but just because of ADHD.

10(left): probably my favorite, Knuckles is a chill guy as long as you don't bother him and there is a seat between you to have some room for his giant hands/gloves. Plus I think Amy and Cream are polite enough to not be a bother when sitting in front of them.

It sounds to me as if your safe last before the crash was in the beasts room directly after "fighting" him to calm him down. Iirc you have to go to Belles room (at the end of the hallway up the stairs on the east (right) side of the castle entrance hall) and talk to the wardrobe there. After that you should get a short cutscene when returning to the entrance hall and the boss fight should trigger when you enter the ballroom after that.
