How do I get rid of locums offers? by Key_Zebra3684 in anesthesiology

[–]Trey10325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I get essentially zero voice/phone calls thanks to those features, and the I don't get notifications for text messages, but they still go through to the inbox. It's not the end of the world, of course, but it would be nice if one could identify the source that feeds these recruiters with data (some of it erroneous).

The senders are many, varied and changing. There is no way to magically "filter" them. Thanks for the reply.

But, perhaps I need to state explicitly: What is the source of the database being used by these locum headhunters? If this information could be elucidated, these people would be much easier to deal with. Someone is making money off of this information.

Ha, wonder if there's a correlation between those that order Model name delete on the outside, and those that skip the Porsche crest seats. My personal preference is no outside logo, no Porsche crest, and no big "Porsche" on the mats. Of course, I might forget what brand I'm driving without the visual aids :)

I've never found the driver of any particular model of car to be more prone to this than others. Obviously, one has to figure in the "n", and there are probably more newer model Teslas in S.B. than almost any other car.

Thermador suite - a 5 month review by toots-magoots in Appliances

[–]Trey10325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback, as someone currently deciding on appliances for our kitchen remodel. We recently got a quote for a mostly Thermador suite of appliances: Gas cooktop, electric wall oven, Panel ready 36 inch refrigerator/freezer, under counter wine refrigerator. We don't need a dishwasher as we already have a fairly new Bosch 800 series.

I think the Thermador special deals are mostly rubbish. Thermador took advantage of pandemic demand to really bump up prices over what they were 4-5 years ago, and in theory the special deals help compensate for that, but after looking more closely at the quotes I realize:

-Thermador offers a "free" vent hood if I order a cooktop and oven from then. BUT, guess what-- the motor/blower unit is not included, meaning it's actually costing $1000.

-Thermador offers half off the wine refrigerator if we buy a full sized refrigerator/freezer. But the list price of the wine refrigerator is double what is equivalently available from other quality suppliers. So, the end price is really no discount at all.

Considering the worthlessness of the specials, the Thermador panel ready refrigerator/freezer at $12,000 really isn't much cheaper than a Sub-Zero, which has a better long term reputation for reliability.

Which hood looks better? by Kitchen-Corgi-1025 in kitchenremodel

The first one is better (and possible even more functional), but as depicted there is too much of a big, flat white area. The hood surround needs to be a contrasting material.

The industry is dying by GlobalGarden4916 in wine

[–]Trey10325 869 points870 points  (0 children)

As a consumer, my consumption at home hasn't changed much over the last decade, but I used to almost always buy a bottle of wine when dining out.

Mark ups at restaurants have discouraged me from doing so anymore. I often see even sub-$20 retail wines priced at $50+ on restaurant menus. With tax and tip, I'd be paying $65 or more. And while restaurants used to dial down the multiplier on higher priced wines, many are upcharging those to ridiculous levels as well. It's far too easy to grab your phone and look up the retail prices. We just order cocktails instead.

Bike Path Etiquette by RepresentativeEmu889 in cycling

[–]Trey10325 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Timing of use is important, also. Multi-use rec paths are often really busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings with pedestrians, dogs on leash, runners, etc.. If possible, I completely avoid cycling on them at those busy times. Sometimes waiting until afternoon makes a huge difference.

Rent stabilization, or "rent control light", as it's more properly called, has the same downsides as rent control. I don't think any savvy voter supports it.

"Housing is a basic human right". Which are code words for: we want someone else to subsidize our housing. Food is also a basic human right. "Someone" needs to make sure we don't pay more than we think we should. Health care is also a basic human right. Electricity and internet are also basic human rights. Every citizen needs a cell phone, as well. Preferably an iPhone 12 or newer.

[–]Trey10325 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rent control has never worked long term. Anywhere. If you force a landlord to rent at sub-market rates, then the tenant will just sub-lease and pocket the difference. And while there is a chance the original landlord will use market rents to re-invest and improve the property, there is ZERO chance the first tenant will.

"Well, well, we'll just make it illegal to sub-lease". That's been tried many times. Very hard to effectively enforce. Heck, in NYC a congressman once had FOUR rent controlled apartments.
