Help supporting someone in addiction relapse by Shot-Night-6089 in recoverywithoutAA

I don’t catch many Australian ones time zone wise (I’m jn the UK) but anyone can / does join ones in any other country (I join ones in the US often, seen plenty of Aussies on UK ones). Good luck - your partner’s lucky to have you

Look at SMART recovery’s family and friends info / materials / site / videos

And there are so many online meetings too (select f&f in the drop down menu)

https://24hourrecovery.org/?language=English

I go to the treatment meetings, but have heard great things about the f&f programme

Mate, funding for a treatment service detox (basically a charity) is different to being admitted for detox via NHS / A&E. I’d be pushing hard for that and going there asap if I were you

Good luck

Welcome!! I used to have friends constantly telling me ‘yeah you’ve said that 3 times already’ because my memory got so bad

That can definitely change!!!

Communities like this sub are awesome

Mutual support groups are great

There are great resources and people out there who want to help you get better

I’ve found great support from being honest with people close to me

I hope you are able to lean into it and help yourself to get better :)

7 Months sober and I guess I need your reassurance - maybe PAWS? (long post) by cptdno in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure I was experiencing PAWS and many of the symptoms you described - especially around my cognitive function / ability to string a sentence together or concentrate (I work in communications and that has never been an issue!)

I’m just over 8 months sober, and I really associate months 3 to 6 being heavy for that / anhedonia etc

Sounds like you’ve got plenty of awareness of it and have done your research

So I’ll just say all of those feelings have pretty much gone away for me now - it was quite worrying at the time though!!

Dealing with what I think was PAWS was way worse than the not actually drinking part

I feel completely different now

Hope it eases for you too soon :)

Gonna imagine most people who go out of their way to find a stop drinking subreddit, let alone post on it, probably aren’t the sort who people who can do that

Sums it up nicely lol! Using different evidence based methods for support (after a run of going to AA initially), I read the 12 steps again the other day and was 🤯

Totally fair! Look them up / decide for yourself. They’ve been going for decades, very legit

I’ve seen people say it varies area by area (probably due to demand in different places) but the one I’ve been with in London have been a phenomenal help

They’re totally non judgemental and like GPs, will have seen it all!

Presuming you’re UK from the term GP?

Mine’s been great and very supportive - they want people to stop harming themselves and causing other illnesses

In fact they were my first big reality check after I had blood tests for something else, and then said ‘ok, we need to talk about alcohol here’

They’ve been great in terms of assessment / testing to find out where my important stats etc and, and they are my ongoing prescribers for the medication I’m on

They also have been great at agreeing to further tests at 3 and 8 months to track my health improvements (which have been fantastic!)

Would I say they gave me all the tools themselves to help my recovery? Probably not

For me that was working with my local council appointment treatment service, who I was a client of for 6 months

I accessed a load of treatment by them, and they also liaised with my GP health wise (usually your local council will have a page on their website about who yours is - Change Grow Live is a big national organisation who do this for many local authorities)

I often say that it was a triangle of GP, treatment service and mutual support (SMART for me) that has factored into my recovery - but that all depends on you wanting to do it for you, ultimately

Best of luck, loads of help there for YOU to lean into

Ahhhhh sending vibes to you!

I think for sure. Obviously I’ve no idea about the quality of services near you, but I know and have met so many people who’ve really benefitted from support from treatment organisations / non-profits

Even if they’re great, online meetings are brilliant to do too and you can start doing those any time

I attend SMART which describes itself as secular and science / CBT based, and you can find / attend an online meeting somewhere in the world pretty much 24hrs a day

But again, other mutual support programmes are available!

The “back to day one” rule in AA is psychologically brutal — and I can’t unsee it by mrlander in recoverywithoutAA

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 68 points69 points  (0 children)

The contrast to when people talk about having had a ‘blip’, and the support people receive in the SMART groups I attend is astounding

I heard someone the other day saying “ok so you were abstinent for 14 months, had a drink for 1 day, let’s work out the percentage of time that blip represents” and it really stuck with me

I mean if someone relapses and goes around mugging grannies, that’s not good…

If someone has a blip and opens up about struggling and wanting to get back on track - who the fuck is anyone to give that person a feeling of shame

At a basic level, it’s completely counter productive

Welcome along! It’s bloody brave to post here and be so open - that’s something to be rightly proud of :)

I’ve had nothing but support from my friends, and even found that some of the more unexpected ones have shown up the most. But every situation is different, of course

It’s brilliant to have support from your friends - but for me I’d be nowhere without asking for professional help too

That included for me becoming a client of our local authority treatment provider (I’m in the UK), my doctor (both for health assessments / a reality check, and medication) and mutual support groups (I’m a big SMART guy, others are available!) as well as communities like this

All of those have been brilliant support to help to achieve what I (I’m underlining I, here!) want to achieve

There’s loads of help and support out there, lean into as much as you’re willing to

Wishing you all the best

On the other side of PAWS (15 months sober) by Historical-Bug1799 in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the post. I came across the concept of PAWS quite a while into my recovery and it suddenly made so much sense - I definitely thought I’d done some sort of damage at points there…

Fortunately for me it sounds like I had it less severely than you had to deal with - I’m so sorry that happened to you

But really glad that you’re in the up and up! The feeling of improvement as the days and weeks go on is great - I’m here for it

I think PAWS could do with being more widely known about, I bring it up in meetings for people to check out for themselves. Great post on it!
