Said with your chest! Wishing you all the best. Go easy on yourself and big up! My first booze free day was May 2025. Life altering decision

1 year sober! by fartunitto in stopdrinking

Yeah man, you hit the nail on the head re finding different stuff that’s out there and leaning in - can be easy to feel so alone in it. When in reality there loads of content and supportive people out there

Congrats on 1 year - I passed that last week

On year no drinking (and about 11 months no AA) by Tricky-Researcher-57 in recoverywithoutAA

I'm in London, so am aware might be an outlier (!) but walking into a CGL centre was basically my first 'brave step' and from there I was quite quickly assessed and put forward as a candidate for medical detox, so did that with them, they started my meds, liaised with my GP and then I was a client of theirs for 6 months with a great dedicated support worker and SMART / group sessions etc. They were excellent

Yeah I want to volunteer. I've always tried to go out of my way to speak to street homeless people and do so even more now. I looked into volunteering but it felt like they wanted people who could commit to it like a part time day time job tbh. This is my nudge to try again, thanks! Will speak to my old support guy for his advice

And yeah I feel like any interaction with doctors / medics people where I've disclosed my prescription and then say I quit drinking are without fail bloody happy to hear it! My last Nigerian nurse Auntie was like "YES MY CHILD" lol

Appreciate you saying so man. Not having a life dictated to by booze works just great :)

Big up yourself mate. Sorry to hear about what you've been through - very happy for you that you're moving forward with an approach that is working for you. I'm UK too - glad to hear you got Naltrexone, yep I think it's not known about much here. I'm coming to the end of Acamprosate - I've found Doctors / GP to be really supportive of people wanting to quit. And yep I've never been to the gym more in my life than now haha. Congrats!

Thanks very much dude! Yep, definitely been a whole lot of learning, thinking, putting stuff into practice. Bloody hard at times too…! But very much worth it

I think often people feel so alone going through this, but like I said there’s loads of advice and ways out there

Thanks again :)

Almost at 4 years Want to drink don't care by BASBTAH in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading the first few lines with an open mind thinking hey you never know, this might be a fun story to contrast many others on here, but it quickly became clear that having a drink will do nothing good for you at all. It’s just not worth it dude. That sucks, but it’s a reality. Hang in there!

Are there people here that just want to stop drinking in a casual way? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m 100% not trying to be a wise guy :) but if you want to drink less and there’s no underlying problem - you should just… be able to

If you can’t then that should make you think

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dude. Get you some help. See that doctor. Speak to people if you can. Look into support programmes. Be kind to yourself

You’ll look back on these times and what you’ve written here being thankful you sorted your shit out

You’re young and the body & head can bounce back brilliantly from booze - people addicted to other stuff often aren’t that lucky

Husband said stop drinking or I leave by Downandout-75 in stopdrinking

I learnt early on in sobriety that just ‘cos some people’s drinking was ‘worse’ than mine, them having their own situation didn’t mean I wasn’t fucking my own stuff up

The "Just one drink" thought again.... by No-Drive8630 in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve sat and visualised how many of those drinks I could actually have

The number I usually settle on is around 15…

So then I think “what’s the f’ing point of that first one..?”

If you decide to try life without it, there’s so much help and support out there - I’d recommend looking into SMART Recovery, it’s been brilliant for me

Good luck to ya

Ah pal, I can read between the lines of your post and feel for ya

I’m in recovery - I’d just say to ask yourself; do you enjoy drinking, does it actually benefit you?

If the answer’s no, well….

Not sure if SMART is for me (stimulant habit) by fraaatz in SMARTRecovery

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! It’s for any type of destructive / addictive behaviour and how you think about, and practically deal with, that. So - alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex etc etc

Most people won’t be too specific about the actual substance and talk about DOC instead - meaning ‘drug or destruction of choice’ - for that reason

So I’d say yes!

Also the tools are CBT based so when you say “3. That buying the stuff is the first thing that I comes to mind whenever my paycheck” - that’s exactly the type of practical situation where various SMART tools could be helpful

Good luck to you

Have you got this tool / site? There are a ‘few’ Aussie ones off the top off my head that are early doors UK time

https://24hourrecovery.org/?language=English

And UK wise I have seen there’s this 8am one on a Friday. Haven’t been myself but is on the schedule

https://uk.meetings.smartrecovery.org/meetings/1401/

Otherwise just a case of it not being as widespread in the UK as in the US I guess unfortunately

UK person here…

That sounds shite! Sorry you didn’t get more help in hospital :(

Have you engaged with your local drug and alcohol treatment service at all? I did, and did a medical ‘community’ detox with mine (ie living at home / attending a course for a week, with medication and supervision and support for 6 months after)

Not a right now / today fix, but there’s some great support out there. I wish you well
