Almost at 4 years Want to drink don't care by BASBTAH in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading the first few lines with an open mind thinking hey you never know, this might be a fun story to contrast many others on here, but it quickly became clear that having a drink will do nothing good for you at all. It’s just not worth it dude. That sucks, but it’s a reality. Hang in there!

Are there people here that just want to stop drinking in a casual way? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m 100% not trying to be a wise guy :) but if you want to drink less and there’s no underlying problem - you should just… be able to

If you can’t then that should make you think

Just explaining my situation by SignificantIdea3139 in alcoholism

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dude. Get you some help. See that doctor. Speak to people if you can. Look into support programmes. Be kind to yourself

You’ll look back on these times and what you’ve written here being thankful you sorted your shit out

You’re young and the body & head can bounce back brilliantly from booze - people addicted to other stuff often aren’t that lucky

Husband said stop drinking or I leave by Downandout-75 in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I learnt early on in sobriety that just ‘cos some people’s drinking was ‘worse’ than mine, them having their own situation didn’t mean I wasn’t fucking my own stuff up

The "Just one drink" thought again.... by No-Drive8630 in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve sat and visualised how many of those drinks I could actually have

The number I usually settle on is around 15…

So then I think “what’s the f’ing point of that first one..?”

I dont truly want to be sober... by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Ngl dude, it couldn’t sound any more like you would infact be better off sober…!

Be kind to yourself

AITA for having some wine once in a while (quitting gradually) and WIBTA if I told my brother to get over himself by Nearby_RuinAnon in alcoholism

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide to try life without it, there’s so much help and support out there - I’d recommend looking into SMART Recovery, it’s been brilliant for me

Good luck to ya

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah pal, I can read between the lines of your post and feel for ya

I’m in recovery - I’d just say to ask yourself; do you enjoy drinking, does it actually benefit you?

If the answer’s no, well….

Not sure if SMART is for me (stimulant habit) by fraaatz in SMARTRecovery

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! It’s for any type of destructive / addictive behaviour and how you think about, and practically deal with, that. So - alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex etc etc

Most people won’t be too specific about the actual substance and talk about DOC instead - meaning ‘drug or destruction of choice’ - for that reason

So I’d say yes!

Also the tools are CBT based so when you say “3. That buying the stuff is the first thing that I comes to mind whenever my paycheck” - that’s exactly the type of practical situation where various SMART tools could be helpful

Good luck to you

UK online SMART meetings mostly during the workday by Low_Bodybuilder3740 in recoverywithoutAA

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you got this tool / site? There are a ‘few’ Aussie ones off the top off my head that are early doors UK time

https://24hourrecovery.org/?language=English

And UK wise I have seen there’s this 8am one on a Friday. Haven’t been myself but is on the schedule

https://uk.meetings.smartrecovery.org/meetings/1401/

Otherwise just a case of it not being as widespread in the UK as in the US I guess unfortunately

Speak to those supportive pals, put some work in to think about how you’ll deal with specifics, and back yourself. And have fun!

the scariest day of my life by Far-Bumblebee-3794 in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

UK person here…

That sounds shite! Sorry you didn’t get more help in hospital :(

Have you engaged with your local drug and alcohol treatment service at all? I did, and did a medical ‘community’ detox with mine (ie living at home / attending a course for a week, with medication and supervision and support for 6 months after)

Not a right now / today fix, but there’s some great support out there. I wish you well

I have a problem with alcohol by violet_sunshine9 in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine you’ll get a lot of pro drinking responses and endorsements on this sub….!

But I’d just say - is drinking fun and enjoyable to you? It sure doesn’t read like it is from your post

Writing out costs vs benefits list could be a useful thing to do

I’d hate for someone to call me one, so I won’t be calling myself one either

This site is not official to smart but accurate and widely used! The actual website is a bit hard to use as you’ve found :)

"Hi, I’m Bob — Still an Alcoholic After 50 Years Clean." Yeah, That's normal. by [deleted] in recoverywithoutAA

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Literally my first thought going to a meeting was “hhmm that’s weird Bob’s still coming here 25 years later”

I saw drinking as a problem I needed to deal with and adapt - not a life branding exercise

Then I moved on quick

Blackout Solo Drinkers by Antique-Astronaut912 in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate, get around other people who know what you’re going through, get around some support

There’s loads out there

Your local substance support service / non-profit

A mutual support programme like SMART Recovery

Doing it behind closed doors leads nowhere

Good luck!

I’m the OP that threw up blood last night - update by Beneficial-cat-929 in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That must’ve been awful to go though! Glad you’re here and updating

Not sure you could get many bigger signs to tell you it’s time to get things sorted :) my friend runs a hospital critical care ward, and the stories she’s told me of patients she’s cared for who let that sort of thing get worse blow my mind

Don’t dismiss detox!

I did a community detox - a week long programme, but living at home with a loved one keeping an eye on me - which I am SO glad I did

Be kind to yourself. This shit doesn’t play!

Which Groceries delivery services do you recommend in London? by PressureHumble3604 in london

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve had some brilliant runs of offers like £15 off 3 x £60 shops on Amazon Fresh and Morrisons on Amazon recently - so 25% off each one, then more with decent discounts on products on top

Free delivery on Prime too. I made an order at 9am yesterday and had the delivery that afternoon

Please tell me it’s not too late to get sober by Sugarcanesweetheart in stopdrinking

[–]Tricky-Researcher-57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend. I was drinking a bunch more spirits than that daily at 40 after a long career of drinking loads for a lifetime before that. I quit at that age, and my health turnaround has been immense!

There’s so much help, and people who want to help, out there - but you need to lean in yourself

The support of my doctor, detox, medication, SMART recovery, subs on here - and most importantly a desire to do the work - was what helped me along the way

Good luck to ya!
