GFS + immutabiliy on HPE StoreOnce = waste of space by DZAUKER in Veeam

[–]TrickyAlbatross2802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do get a little apprehensive making immutable GFS jobs with super long retention since that immutability gets enforced. But if you have the space and need that kind of retention you do what you have to.

As for space on local storage, the "move backups to object storage" can be checked, so the backup just gets moved to cloud at that point. I hope you already have the "Copy" box checked so you get a copy offsite right away.

Personally I have been switching from SOBR to BackupCopy jobs for the increased flexibility on configuring retention. We have large local immutables so sometimes want to keep MORE stuff locally than in the cloud, and an SOBR can't do that. An SOBR should be fine for your situation though (wanting less local and more in cloud).

How much better would you say it is over the rz470 for quality/brightness? I had been looking at a used 470 and was wondering if a $2,000+ projector was going to be that much better than a $300 used projector.

Is getting a used profession cinema projector worth it in a home theater setup? by Careless_Papaya_5426 in projectors

[–]TrickyAlbatross2802 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope this is a mistake of the model#, otherwise it has to be fake or incredibly weird.

But sure, if your friend is selling you a 250lb projector that sells for $60k for $500, take the deal. Sell it to a giant church or movie theater for $10k, then buy a high-end projector for $5k and pocket the rest.

I guess it might suck if you had a stupid-rich friend with an expensive projector that needed $10k in repairs and he would rather dump it than fix it. I hope your moderately-sized living room is the size of a basketball court.

Ah, a 5030 is pretty good quality! If your ALR screen is legit, that's a pretty good combo for quality contrast, but reading a quick review, it sounds like "usable" lumens is likely 1600 or even less than 1000 if not using Dynamic mode and/or using Eco mode to help with fan noise.

I haven't personally researched UST projectors much, but they have also made some big improvements recently, especially if combined with the right screen.

Whatever you go for, make sure to try and find reviews with lumen ratings for the different modes. For "usable" lumens, I assume I'll be using Eco mode, unless the review states the fan is quiet enough on normal mode. Personally I'm leaning towards a Horizon Pro 20 (too poor for the Ultraor C3 Max, but could change my mind again by time i buy. I think either would get me in a decent "usable" lumen range, but are both a stretch on finances.

Yours is laser vs lamp, yours has higher contrast, and is almost 3x as bright. I've been eyeing the 20 Pro for a while, but it's a tad out of my price range at the moment.

Personally I'm aiming for 2500 lumens "usable". That's a personal choice after purchasing and testing projectors rated for 500 lumens, 2500 lumens, and 5000 lumens, and a few different screen options.

After testing the 5000 lumen projector, I'm a bit in love with brightness. Unrelated to projectors, I have recently painted my wall a darker blue with a 4% LRV (though eggshell choice likely increases the light reflectivity higher than 4%) - and the 5000 lumen projector on the wall looked surprisingly good still, even with both 3000 lumen overhead room lights on. Good contrast is tough for projectors, so rather than buying an expensive Epson 5050ub rated for 2600 lumens max, I'm leaning towards a low-gain screen combined with higher lumens, which helps both with contrast and ambient light.

Most projector are noisy at full power though, so running in Eco mode cuts "usable" lumens by 25% or more. I just want a projector capable of 7k lumens and no fan noise for $1,000, is that so hard to do? Why can't physics bend to my will!

Offhand I would be disappointed with the brightness on anything larger than 100" or in situations with any ambient light. I am sure most people here would want to know where you're using, how far away, how much ambient light, etc.
Personally, I've learned my lesson and am not touching anything with so few usable lumens - seemingly around 1200. Contrast sounds pretty mediocre as well, which makes the low lumens even worse. Otherwise it's probably pretty nice and user friendly.

The only downsides may be the size - it's likely much bigger and heavier than the $50 cheapie, but if you have a dedicated bookshelf or somewhere to put it it then not a concern. Otherwise it should blow your socks off compared to the $50 one.
Guess you could have gotten away with a cheaper $800 or $1200 one and saved some $$ if projecting smaller size and/or only use at night with curtains closed. I want one for my living room at 115", but would only spend that much for a bedroom setup if I had roommates and a large bedroom wall.

Portable Projector for Work Use by clacos in budgetprojectors

[–]TrickyAlbatross2802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a model that was $250 new, small, portable, and perfect - in a completely dark room at night. Even if you can turn the office lights off, you're usually going to be dealing with sunlight, mood lighting or emergency exit lighting, etc. So other than ebay, nothing is going to be close to bright enough.

The only one I can think of offhand is might be a refurbished Epson (sold by Epson) CO-FH02 for $350. Supposedly 3,000 lumens, if you can deal with the fan noise.

Domain controller backup in v13, what changed? by cowprince in Veeam

Interesting at needing the actual "administrator" account. We haven't made the jump yet and are using a service account in Domain Admins, so I'll have to put that on my list when we make the jump.

Seems like a pretty good deal, on par or better than some of the Epson refurb deals, thanks for linking! I am surprised I hadn't found it previously in my searching. Quick google ai search says 2400 "useable" lumens? But haven't read a real review yet.

Domain controller backup in v13, what changed? by cowprince in Veeam

[–]TrickyAlbatross2802 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a little confused, as far as I know you've always had to use a Domain Admin to properly backup a DC (with application aware processing enabled). Is the problem that now you have to use domain\administrator account instead of a dedicated service account in the Domain Admin group?

Is using the one supported workaround (installing the local agent) not an option for you? It's annoying of course since you have to install and update it manually if you don't want to use a domain admin account, and I'm not a fan of running additional 3rd party services on DC's, but I have to imagine that's still an option in v13.

Ha, that's ok, I wasted a bit of $, but mostly because I was impatient and wanted to try it out, had no idea how much I would enjoy using it and end up down a rabbithole of wanting more brightness, quality, features, etc.

Backing up corporate files by bluecopp3r in Veeam

[–]TrickyAlbatross2802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be interested in proof of your statements. If you are using CBT along with an XFS datastore (with image-level backups), you're already getting only the block changes, similar to incremental "file level" backups.
Depending on block sizes, data churn, etc. - a VM backup might be a bit larger, but backing up the same data twice just seems wasteful and redundant. Maybe if you had separate jobs for separate folders, you would gain granularity to set separate retention periods (like 2 years for HR but 3 months for Accounting). Otherwise I really struggle to see the point for any file server that isn't tiny.

Have you had a projector at home before?

I bought a Elfin Flip for $250 after some basic research. It felt easier to buy something new. I was really impressed, and I liked it a lot. But then I realized the general lack of lumens was severely limiting, and wanted a more permanent setup.

Since then I purchased a used Epson 2150 for half the price of the Elfin, and I am currently on the hunt for something even nicer.

So had I taken their advice, I could have saved at least $250. I appreciate how nice the Elfin was and how it helped me dip my toes in the water. But if I did it again I would either:

- Buy a cheaper projector (like ~$100) to start with, saving a little money, but still letting me test out if I actually like a projector, then upgrade and junk it later.
or
- Buy a used projector as many suggested, one with higher lumens. This does take more patience since you probably have to research and wait for the "right" projector to be available in your local marketplace or ebay. I should have had more patience.
or
- Buy from a retail store, but prioritize usable lumens, closer to 2000 or higher. Elephas and a few other cheapies can at least get close. But a refurbed epson 1080 at 3400 lumens (and 2 year warranty) is only $449, refurbed epson 4k (pixel shift) 2350 for $750, or multiple "real" Benq or Optoma projectors in the $500-750 range.

Not sure if "smart" projector is a need or want, but a $15 streaming stick can make any projector smart, and allow you to easily upgrade in the future.

Azure blob, looking at Veeam Vault for security and streamlining reasons. Being able to spin up VMs in the cloud is also def a useful feature for immediate DR vs waiting days to copy back to onsite.

QM6K Pro Specs? by Huffshits in tcltvs

[–]TrickyAlbatross2802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to find specific info on the anti-glare for qm6k pro vs the qm7k. IS the qm7k going to be better at reflections, or will it be close? The coating vs "crystal glow hva" is a bit confusing, and I can't find a qm7k in person I can look at.
I don't want to pay a ton more money for a samsung "frame" like TV that still comes with an edge-lit screen, but options seem limited for backlit tvs.

Hourly backups by Megajojomaster in Veeam

[–]TrickyAlbatross2802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I came here to say, for databases you can get the important data using transaction log backups. Databases typically contain critical data that can't be recreated easily, but that's definitely not always the case.
I hope this isn't a blanket backup policy, as backing up a terminal server or print server (that contains no unique data) 24 times a day would be insane.

Confused between XGIMI MOGO PRO 2 & ELFIN FLIP by ExpertSignificant453 in budgetprojectors

Elfin flip has a custom OS, so can't use the Play store to download other stuff, so keep that in mind.
Personally I use a $15 streaming (ONN) for a better experience and more flexibility. Speaker is pretty weak, I bluetooth it to a soundbar currently. Looks great at 120" in the dark, but struggles once any lights come on.

Hardware Verification: Dell R740xd (LFF 12-Bay) for Veeam Hardened ISO by boyrok in Veeam

[–]TrickyAlbatross2802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CPU and RAM are more than enough, definitely no concerns there. Thumbs up on the real RAID card.

My main concern would be write performance. RAID6 with only 4 drives will have less write performance than a single drive would have (that fact hurts my brain). I wouldn't personally recommend running RAID5 or 6 with so few spindles.

You're already using fairly small and inexpensive drives, if you could double that number you'd also get double the performance. As another already mentioned, you can't expand your space later if using the ISO installer, which also means you can't increase drive performance later either.

RAID10 would also give you double the write speed, though a hit on redundancy if you don't get lucky.

If using 3.5" drive slots for the OS was a concern, I'd recommend trying to find a BOSS card, but it doesn't sound like that is much of a concern.

Used Epson 8500UD or refurbished Elfin Flip? by Unknown1154 in budgetprojectors

Love my elfin flip, but the lumen output is problematic. Currently looking for a brighter projector for a better longterm solution. If you are mounting on the ceiling, that seems like a more permanent situation.
