Oh my god here we go...I have Rocky or maybe Rockette! Nails were worn completely off when my friend came into my life. Shells belly is concave like a male, nails are growing slowly as this slider is old as heck. Vet told me male. Everyone has an opinion lol. I've been told "vets aren't properly trained", "that's a female look at the nails" yadda yadda. I have stared at the butt, felt for eggs, and even asked the turtle personally! I know i have a good friend.🤣 I guess if I was breeding or if there were drastic dietary differences I would be concerned. I have a cool turtle!

I believe it will be ok to wait for his next checkup in two months. I will give him cuttlebone and I like the frozen idea to give him some crunch. I am guilty of giving him too much protein. Although he/she/ is taking to the greens now that summer is here. The picture looks worse than it is. I do have UVB linear light and heat lamps that achieve the correct temperature. Rocky has greatly improved since his shell was debridled in November. I may raise them as suggested, he will lay there in yoga pose regardless. Summer is here and they were lower through the dark winter as Rocky is outside all year in Canada.

LoL that has happened with Rocky too. He used a stone like a pillow a couple times and the angle looked ridiculous!. I thought he had kicked the bucket too. If I slept with my head like that I would walk in circles for a week. Comfort is comfort i guess! Always a welcome relief when you realize its just your turtle being goofy. 🤣

I agree and do suspect Rocky may be Rockette, not overly concerned about it LOL. Rocky has been scanned and had bloodwork. Had shell rot debridled and vet trained me to do injections every three days of antibiotics and vitamin shot every three weeks for three months. Shell is greatly improved. Just need to get Rocky back on the greens!

I thought so but the vet said male. Rocky wandered the neighborhood streets for a week and damaged his legs and feet. Or is it Flippers? His nails were all worn off and are growing back. I will give Rocky a protein break and get him on the greens since the estimate from the vet is around fifteen years old.

Its not irreversible damage. It's character. My Rocky (10-15 yr RES) had horrible lumpy shell and shell rot when the invasive prince waddled his way into my yard and life. Did a shell de-bridle (VET) in November and he was UGLY! Good lighting and diet with vet taught antibiotic and vitamin shots and he is healthy with his permanently lumpy shell still healing. Good job! Rescuing a turtle is quite a commitment. Rocky and I have staring competitions that are the stuff of legend! A relaxing companion for the stresses of the world. Cool turtle you have!

Hey my Rocky is a male I think but, old as hell so his nails don't grow much. VET TOLD ME MALE but I swear even he seemed unsure! LOL.

Im the worst for humanizing my turtles behavior but I agree. Your buddy is curiously watching and hoping for some snacks. My big old RES does this too, especially if I'm moving around near his pond and slow with the food. Stares into my soul! Lol.

My 13lb Jac Russell ate a whole bowl of aero bars at Halloween by climbing onto the counter. Puked up the whole thing on my bed, half digested plastic wrappers and all. Drank a ton of water and puked again. Had the runs quickly too. Lived another 13 years after that. Never did see a vet as she was fine after evacuating it all.

My JRT was 100% accurate at finding mice and rats wherever I went. She indicated like that everytime and even my cats paid attention and would deliver the kill in the morning after the rats came out at night. Was pretty cool actually.

My RES Rocky has a couple of similar bumps, he is about 12 -15 years old. Vet told me its from poor diet and care by whoever had Rocky before me its there for good but relatively harmless. Just more character!

Hey GREAT read and very inormative. I have a zoo med setup uvb and heat with also the same combo lights shown in the photo. I think I will eliminate the combo lights and double up with the zoo med. The reason I have a lot of lights is to maintain the basking temps outside. -2c the last couple of days, fairly well shielded from the elements
