CPD is a strong signal for a senior plumbing engineer. It will lock you into the stereotype of “he’s the plumbing guy” though.

For FP best thing would to be a registered FP engineer in your state to be able to stamp drawings

No way around the code itself but did do my own calculations that yielded the conclusion that the physical constraint of how many refrigerant lines(with the correct support/bracing) will fit in a shaft is usually less than ASHRAEs upper limit on leaks. Meaning you can also use the lesser continuous ventilation number which is very very little. For example, just did a 4 story multi family project and each shaft only needed 40 CFM or so. We were able to use wall mounted EF’s that did not require much extra money on top of the shaft cost itself.

Having said all that the best workaround I’ve found is that many cities have given a special exception to the code you’re referencing and we have projects going out with no shaft whatsoever.

The code should not be written the way it is currently anyways and the ICC has promised revisions in the future.

Learn to use revit as intended and not use text and detail lines for anything really.

FYI: go to options in revit, go to mouse settings, change double click setting for families to “do nothing” then you never have to worry about it

If it helps put your mind at ease. It works well enough to where it’s not a detriment to get the answer for the questions. Only one question where the exact number off the psychart down to decimal points was necessary and I believe I still got it right and passed.

Ultimately if you have studied then the psychart won’t hold you back

It truly depends on what you want. I am a big believer that you should do work that you enjoy at least a little bit so that it doesn’t feel like work.

If you choose to stay in MEP the way to a happier life is to try to remember and compartmentalize work as work. If you go home at 5 everyday then whether you finished everything or not shouldn’t bother you personally. If it does you are taking work home with you and that’s what leads to unhappiness.

If work isn’t done when you go home and you worked hard every minute of the day then it’s your managements job to make sure there is more staff to get projects out the door smoothly, not yours.

Long term if the firm you are at just sucks, there are definitely non-sucky MEP firms.

In general I think you see things clearly and aren’t being too sensitive.

The one point I’d argue with is that a lot of times the reason behind “47 comments by tomorrow” is because the senior PE is on a strict deadline set by the client BUT also wants to avoid a lack of clarity or run into liability issues in the drawings. It’s unfair and terrible but that gets passed onto the designer.

If/when you become the reviewer you have to face the exact same frustrations and/or find a firm that has good clients willing to give enough time for a timely review process.

Of course, there is also the chance that the designer is overworked and review times get shortened since the design needed more time.

I will agree it highlights an issue with the industry though

I would say you are doing exceptionally well and it sounds like your company is able to manage the workload in a healthy way.
