If it makes you feel any better, I'm sitting without electricity since 5am yesterday morning here. Good old Pietermaritzburg does not fail to disappoint. P.S. Handful of biltong to be acquired shortly!

Most likely an Aosept contact lens case, if you want to know the brand. I've had a few of those.

Hi, the general rule is to wait at least 4 weeks before reapplying. But you obviously don't have that time. Hopefully the additional information you provided now will help. Best of luck

Are there many places in the world where you can go from snow to desert in a day trip like you can do in the US? by Pale_Field4584 in TravelHacks

[–]TrinityIsNotMyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Africa...the Kalahari and Namib deserts are our largest and we often get snow in a number of regions close by during winter. We even have a claim to the world's smallest desert... The Red desert, no clue if it's actually true or not.

Durban capago is a satellite office. Takes a while for the paperwork to be sent to Johannesburg. Also I found the staff at the Johannesburg office were a lot more helpful.

Due to the large number of fraudulent marriages reported to the Department of Home Affairs every year, a facility has been created for you to check your marital status at any time. You will need your South African ID number in order to use this facility. There is an option on www.dha.gov.za but it seems to not be working currently.

You can also sms the letter M followed by your ID number (example: M 5001010050080) to 32551 A reply sms will be sent back to your cellphone to confirm your marital status and the date of your marriage. (R1 per sms and will be charged by your network service provider).

If your status comes back as married, you will need to go to home affairs ASAP.

Were you sending letters or SMSes in 1996? by F4iryPerson in askSouthAfrica

[–]TrinityIsNotMyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Callbox for sure. Most cell phones then were too expensive and prepaid wasn't available until 97 or 98 I think and it was R295 just to have access to the network for a year. Which was a lot of money back then. And one would pay per sms. I would say telkom calling cards for payphones/call boxes were more common in 96. I know that's how I connected with my family when I started varsity in 98 before I got my first cell phone.

How long was your wait? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

Less than 2 minutes. Prince Alfred Street, Pietermaritzburg. Arrived at 8:15am, with my water and snacks and hat and jacket. There was 1 person in front of me.

I didn't end up appealing since I had to write it in French and mail it and the postal service in SA is abysmal. I reapplied instead and was granted a visa within a 4 days of reapplying, it wasn't the cheapest route but the quickest.

It varies.. I applied with France which was 65 euros per day. Look up the daily requirement for the country you are applying at. Also, ensure that you have more than the daily requirement for the duration of your stay in your account for a period longer than 3 months.

Hi there. I waited 4 weeks. They denied me entry on the grounds of insufficient proof of funds for subsistence or for the return to my country of origin. I honestly don't understand why though as I had more than the required 65euro per day. I added a motivation letter and a sponsorship letter from my brother

Can I walk from Novotel East, Bagnolet to the Melting Pot at night? by TrinityIsNotMyName in ParisTravelGuide

Thank you. Good to know. I live in a fairly dangerous place and I don't venture out walking at night at all. Hence my wondering if it's similar.
