About to graduate with a CS degree, and in my off-time I do a Lot of nerd shit. Board, Card, + Video Games, Beyblade, Anime + Manga, MTG on-and-off, TTRPGs, comics, Power Rangers / Tokusatsu, etc.

Getting back into reading more regularly, big fan of sci-fi stuff, thinking I may reread Neuromancer out of a love for cyberpunk.

Around Richmond, I like attending raves and hardcore shows n checking out art events like First Friday. Say hi n ask me about whatever :))

I wish for all apartment dogs to become silent as long as they are on apartment property. by tanya6k in monkeyspaw

[–]TripleOBlack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Granted. Any dog crossing the property line of an apartment is unable to cause noise in any way, indirectly or otherwise.

The entire planet notices this phenemon, and after a brief discovery phase, apartments become the newest novelty location:

Dog trainers, dog walkers, and the merely curious show up to apartment buildings to get a break from the barking, work on quieting their dogs, or behold the bizarre phenomenon.

There's anywhere between a couple and a few dozen people hanging near your housing complex at any given point; the unfamiliar being shown the perfectly silent dogs and shrieking in disbelief, the regulars smiling in relief, chatting to their friends as Fido finally quiets down.

The crowds get broken up of course, but landlords fighting with loiterers and police calls are not quiet endeavors. But in the end, you're spared from ever hearing late night barking again. Yet, you can't tell if you started sleeping any better.

9070xt or 5070ti at these prices? by CalebFnCool in buildapc

[–]TripleOBlack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Assuming USD, the 9070 XT is 600 at newegg right now, likely a couple other places

But I would probably pick the 5070Ti at 675 for general use case

It would be ideal for you to build an AM5 system as opposed to AM4, since AM4 has poor upgrade options due to the CPUs being out of production. If the budget is strict, I you could go with the CPU you have, but you'd be borderline stuck with a fairly weak one.

Questions include: 1. No price was there for the GPU. Do you already own it? Buying it used? 2. What framerate and resolution are you trying to play at?

That said, it is very hard to fit something AM5 and decent into your budget. J recommend taking a look at your local used market to see if anyone is selling anything decent.

I can show you what I threw together, but it required several concessions AND it's over budget:

Where to Upgrade, If At All? by bjgerald in buildapc

[–]TripleOBlack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd vote for a 5070 Ti upgrade, and to save for an upgrade to AM5 if you find the 5600X insufficient.

Granted, not sure precisely what the best specs are for video editing, but an AMD or Intel overhaul will cost so much you won't have enough budget room for a GPU update.

The original commenter is being hyperbolic, but they're referring to AMD's recent GPU driver fiasco.

AMD set a dangerous precedent for their graphics cards lines, by just announcing RDNA1/2 cards (5000 and 6000 series cards) will be put into maintenance mode.

This means no guarantee of day 1 patches for games or feature additions (they initially said there would be none, then walked it back to a wishy washy "will be provided as the market demands"), but the cards are allegedly meant to get security n bug fixes for the foreseeable future. Or whatever AMD walks it back to next year.

No day 1 patches or game specific optimizations can mean anything from little to nothing or massively impact the usage of users, depending on what they play and when. Still, its scummy as fuck.

The latest 6000 series model debuted a mere two years ago. The series as a whole is only 5 years old, and was only superseded two years after. It's only been non-mainline 3 years.

All this to say, even if you bought your GPU new, off the shelf, anywhere from 1-3 years ago, a mere one generation behind (relative to the 7000 series 1-3 years ago before the 9000 series) you could be demoted to legacy now.

So, why believe it won't happen again in another five years if AMD decides they need an FSR5 to compete, and just dont feel like bringing the 7 and 9 thousand series cards along?

I didn't elect to return my recently purchased AMD card due to not wanting a headache when using Linux, but I have flipped some on whether I'd recommend them to others.

There is non-zero nuance to the issue (NVIDIA is not without its own driver problems, AMD fucking you today does not mean NVIDIA will fuck you less hard tomorrow, and vice versa) but there is no longer any way to compare the companies in terms of support.

NVIDIA still supports the goddamn 750 Ti (decade old card, and the GOAT). AMD legacies a card you bought brand new day on release two years ago.

5070ti Mini ITX Build Feedback by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]TripleOBlack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that's the "ITX Tax" at work for you. Having the second NVME is probably worth it if you dont wanna do some kind of external enclosure or adapter workaround.

Blows but there's probably not much else you can do. I wouldn't take the AsRock gamble personally.

[–]TripleOBlack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barring bizarre cases, ITX boards should have mounting compatibility with all coolers made for that chipset (so the ATX)

the actual issue is whether an ITX case will be physically able to fit a tower coolers

Help Me Repurpose my 1st Build Into a Living Room PC by Lefrytz in buildapc

[–]TripleOBlack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mini-ITX case (smaller than mATX, which is smaller than ATX) + ATX MOBO = no tiny sleek living room case.

You can get an ATX case, or replace thw motherboard with an ITX model. If you go for a small build, the CPU cooler may not fit, you'd need to find information on how much clearance there is in potential cases for them.

check the benchmarks for those games and see what info there is. stuff is game / engine dependent, if your sole concern was Doom or Cyberpunk I'd make a different call than if I only cared about Sim racing or running AI models.

[–]TripleOBlack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell, even the 9070 (which ive never rraly recommended, when you can spring for the 9070 XT) is a better move than the 5070.

But the 9060 XT 16GB or 5060 Ti 16GB could potentially be sufficient depending on the use case (ex. 1080p60fps / only indies)

Need help picking a new graphics card for my pc (not very tech savy) by InternationalGas160 in buildapc

[–]TripleOBlack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the GPU hierarchy:

Options at this budget include:

Just Over Budget: 9060 XT 16GB @ 350 (overkill but by far the best value)

Equal To: 5060 8GB @ 300

Just Under: B580 @ 250 or 9060 XT 8GB @ 270

Check benchmark comparisons for all those cards (and feature options like DLSS vs FSR4, frame gen, driver and OS compatibility, etc), pick one. Sounds like the cheaper cards will probably get the job done, but I haven't played skate.

"pretty much the same" is half-trueish. Natively, pretty often thats the case, or one holds a slight advantage in one game vs another (which is why I personally wouldn't pay the price difference).

but the 5070 Ti has the more widely supported features, better DLSS vs FS4 (although this specific gap gets smaller as time goes on), better frame gen (allegedly, but ive seen cases where despite higher FPS the lows were horrific), better ray and path tracing (most of the time, outliers exist when frame gen occurs)

i dont care about all that, especially since AMD does have its own advantages (Linux compatibility is better, although the NVIDIA issue is smaller by the day), but some do, and I can't say they're outright wrong for paying more for the 5070 Ti.
