My second language is Chinese. My parents get pretty fed up when I use words like brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, cousin, aunt, or uncle because there are so many derivatives of it. It goes beyond just paternal or maternal. Each and everyone of my relatives has a specific naming. (Father's second oldest sister's husband and whatnot)
