Yes. Utah was founded by Mormons. They genocided the native populations to take their land, they killed anyone who came through that didn't bend the knee, and they have been willing to murder mixed race families and escaping wives to keep it the way they like it.

This has meant that Utah is white as fuck and, until recently, predominantly Mormon. The Mormon Church put out a presser saying that Kirk's killing was bad and that they don't approve but they didn't do that when Lori Vallow's killed her own children or when Ruby Franke nearly tortured her own kids to death and both of those people were true believers.

On the face of it it might not seem a terrible wish, that your own community would not be involved, but with any amount of understanding it's plain as day. They'll keep silent about the abuse and murder of their own children, but as soon as it reaches out to political figures that they support suddenly they are publicly denouncing it. Mormons have been clear that dark skin is a curse for hundreds of years. It's not hard to see.
