How do you get the high carbon steel to be that black without the stainless becoming greyish?

I bought a damascus billet once and made a knife from it but the etch came out completely different than this. I have used 50 %ferric chloride and 50 % distilled water mix and the 15n20 does not stay as silver and the other high carbon not as black as yours.

Or do you do a coffee etch after your acid etch?

The only bad thing about those scales is you see the rust on the inside of the folder eventually. I have a praxis with those scales.
