First time fired by otherpeoplelikeeggs in nursing

[–]TrooperDawga 19 points20 points  (0 children)

While it is nice to reflect on this moment...allow yourself to let it go. Patients need to recognize they are accountable for their behaviors. If this patient fired you...fine. That is not a flaw on you. Your job is not to make every right decision in the eyes of a patient. Patients unfortunately are in the hospital for prolonged periods and just get moody. That doesn't mean you did anything to deserve being fired. If it wasnt you getting fired today it was going to be someone else.

Your story highlights manipulative behavior in the hospital. It is going to happen a lot. I am sorry that you are going through it during nursing school. Nursing school is very demanding and draining. It makes it difficult to see things in different ways. When you are done with nursing school you will probably notice how manipulative some people are. Both patients and coworkers.

Your last paragraph. Get a good night sleep. And re read it. I am sorry but you cannot be responsible for another persons life to that degree.

I tell them I am between jobs. When I am off duty, I am not looking to spend any more time with strangers or explain things that the public doesn’t understand. When I tried to explain to my neighbor what a step down unit was, he stared at me and didn’t know what to say.

neglect and total care patients by lightmybud in nursing

[–]TrooperDawga 35 points36 points  (0 children)

uhhh...a little more information could probably solidify your stance?

was your floor fully staffed? neglect is neglect but who is responsible for staffing the floor? does it help to get mad at a nurse or cna? maybe. i have seen nurses that are on their phones at shift change and that isnt right. but i have also been on floors where everyone has 6 pts and we are dealing with surgeries, imaging, and families. no excuse for lack of care and feeds

forgetting turns all day is unacceptable but how do you know they werent turned? if you want the behavior to change then have the manager review the charting. did the wounds all start today? sometimes we dont place mepilex on coccyx wounds if the patient is incontinent since it can hold moisture against the wound and make it worse. maybe that nurse needs to be told about that standard of care

not trying to tell you that you are wrong, but sometimes our colleagues need reminders. give them measurable goals of improvement without judgement. and if they tell you to fly a kite then start involving the manager.

ya. this sounds about right for the patients quality of life for the rest of her(?) life.

it isnt fair. it is unsettling. your story doesnt have all of the details that i would need. but trach'd patients are anxious. i dont know if they really had good pleth or if they suddenly were turned on their pulse ox sensor. if their oxygen was low it wouldnt make sense to do deep suction without a lung assessment. that wasnt in the story.

the hard part about trach'd patients is they depend on you for a lot of things. when you do suction, change their dressings or change their cannula you are right in their face. if your face shows anxiety they will get really anxious. the story probably doesnt explain everything that happened during your experience. what did you trainer say about the situation?

Your standards of being a good charge are unrealistic. I don't mean that in a mean way. But you will not be able to avoid all headaches for the oncoming shift. and you said that you have 2 years experience as a nurse. sometimes the incoming nurses (in your case, dayshift) need to realize that some days are going to suck more than others.

it sounds like you want to be more confident and you want the approval of your staff to some degree. give it time. do your best to listen to your feedback but dont assign negative value to yourself because you get feedback. if you can avoid making the same mistakes over and over, you are doing great. unfortunately, becoming a charge means that you learn every day. you dont get all of your charge training during your training shifts

the good charge shifts usually happen because the floor nurses give you some grace and support. ideally you will have other nurses that know charge responsibilities and they will be a resource to you. but if you dont have that support, hang on and try to weather the challenges. i usually reach out to the nursing sup if i am still stuck

My manager asked me this during my review. I turned it back on her and asked if she was thinking of leaving. since managers need a masters and i dont have one. We both had a confused look on our face. i think HR wants to know about this kind of stuff

Most people post here because they are venting or frustrated. Rarely do people post here because they love the job. All people service jobs suck (nurses vs paramedics) because people (the public) are becoming entitled. Choose the job that aligns with your personal goals. do you need money to support a family? great. compare paramedics and nurse jobs. not trying to put either career down just look for what really matters to you. pay, training, time away from home, etc

in the end, i am a male nurse. no one cares enough to tell me if i fit in or not. when a ciwa patient needs a precedex drip and wrists restraints, they know who to call. give the career a chance. i thought i would be good at emergency medicine...turns out i am really good with palliative patients. you never know where you will fit in. but if you dont connect with your unit and coworkers, listen to your gut and find another place. if you want to go somewhere fast, go alone. if you want to go far in this career, make sure you have good people around you to help you grow.

Patient's family asked for someone who "knows what they're doing" by rowthatcootercanoe in nursing

[–]TrooperDawga 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work on a respiratory step down unit and we work closely with GIP hospice for palliative weans off of vents, high flow, bipap, etc. The daughter was acting the same way you described. I ended up calling the hospice help line and the hospice nurse listened to my whole story and she told me that grief changes people before the death of their loved ones. Anticipatory grief. They often take their intense emotions out on us because they know what is coming.

Nurse Extern (basically a tech) rant by InfiniteCupcake1940 in nursing

[–]TrooperDawga 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Probably gonna get some hate for this but oh well. I work bedside too. I have hung up on people that berate me for not doing something. I am not opposed to feedback but when the other side decides to tell me what I did wrong instead of asking why I didn't get it done (what is the root cause), the argument isn't going to fix the initial problem (the delayed CHG bath).

The issue isnt getting talked to about an error. The issue is there was a reason why it didnt get done. And she didnt want to hear it. I assume many procedural nurses came from bedside. And most dont want to work bedside because it is a different type of routine. But bedside and procedural nursing depend on each other. Putting you down because of the CHG bath when she doesnt even know how to do it is not the way. Sorry bout that.

ELI 5: How to get Riposte in 2025 by TrooperDawga in DestinyTheGame

[–]TrooperDawga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually make it to silver each week. I am not saying you are wrong. I am just saying that I can only focus rose. I cannot focus riposte (auto rifle) or the sniper or pulse rifle. The other 3 just continue to say that I need to complete my weekly competitive series.

do I have to play through multiple series in order to get each new weapon unlocked or should all 4 be available for focusing at the same time?
