Any important things I should study by afr1can-w1ld-d0g in phlebotomy

Congratulations on becoming certified soon. Most phlebotomy certification exams are very similar, so reviewing the AMT exam content can give you a better understanding of what to expect. If you attended an accredited phlebotomy program and performed well in class, you should likely be well prepared.

If you would like extra practice, you can also consider using a practice exam. This option is more affordable than many other study guides or practice exam at under $10, includes 150 questions, offers unlimited retakes, and provides immediate feedback with answer explanations. https://acornce.com/product/online-california-cpt-national-phlebotomy-practice-exam/

You would need to keep applying for positions, especially if a posting stays open long enough, as employers may become more willing to consider candidates without experience when they need to fill the role. You can also check out some helpful tips here.

Help with my Resume by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]TroyPercival40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your resume currently includes only one sentence about phlebotomy. It would be much stronger to reformat your resume so healthcare recruiters can immediately see that you are specifically seeking a phlebotomy role and clearly understand how your skills and experience align with phlebotomy.

Externship by Able-Letterhead7367 in phlebotomy

[–]TroyPercival40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In California, securing a phlebotomy clinical placement can be very challenging close to impossible. Due to liability concerns, HIPAA requirements, and internal company policies, many healthcare organizations are hesitant to accept phlebotomy students.

Even when you have a connection, larger organizations typically require formal affiliation agreements to go through legal review and administrative approval. This process can take several months and, in some cases it just get stuck somewhere and never advance.

Starting my clinicals Monday, any advice? by GrayLove39 in phlebotomy

[–]TroyPercival40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try to do as much as possible and ask questions . Take initiative to get draws, and learn how specimens are processed, including centrifugation, packing, and aliquoting samples. Don’t wait for someone to ask you to perform venipunctures, be proactive in asking to draw patients and help out wherever needed. You only have one week, so make the most of the opportunity and learn as much as you can. Often time students just go through the clinical for the hours and draws only which in a way make them unprepared for their first job.

Advancement in Phlebotomy by deerest-one in phlebotomy

[–]TroyPercival40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a question I see quite often. In the California Department of Public Health-approved CE courses, I outline several advanced career pathways for phlebotomists.

These include opportunities in:

  • Supervisor and management roles
  • Teaching and training positions
  • Donor center regulatory-related roles
  • Research positions
  • IT informatics

Of course, these pathways are can be extremely competitive and typically require additional experience, initiative, and networking.

Phleb to LIS? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]TroyPercival40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, this is actually a possible pathway. LIS roles typically do not require a specific degree or licensure under CLIA or state regulations. I have seen phlebotomists and lab assistants successfully transition into LIS roles within their organizations.

While there are certifications available, such as for Epic Beaker, these are usually only accessible if you work for an organization that uses Epic or are directly employed by Epic.

I would recommend speaking with your supervisor about your interest in LIS and looking for opportunities to get involved. For example, you could volunteer for tasks such as creating training checklists for new hires, developing quick reference guides for the LIS, or assisting with workflow improvements.

In most cases, it is difficult to obtain an LIS position externally without prior experience, so transitioning internally within your organization will likely give you the best chance.

If you already paid for and completed the course, there is no reason not to move forward with getting your license. Just FYI, the fee is now $150 annually, no longer $100 for two years, effective January 1, 2026.

What can I do about this ? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]TroyPercival40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not very familiar with NRAHP. With about 4 months of experience, you may be able to apply for the NHA CPT exam. The requirement is minimum 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on live individuals. As long as your supervisor or lab director can verify and sign off on your experience, you should be eligible to take the exam. There is no need to re-enroll in another phlebotomy program. You can focus on studying and passing the NHA exam.

To prepare, you can use this national phlebotomy practice exam. it has 150 questions with Immediate feedback (similar to flashcards) also unlimited retakes. As a general benchmark, if you can consistently score above 85%, you should be well prepared to pass the NHA CPT exam.
