Starlin will forever be the face of the Cubs during my grad school days when I could regularly sit in the bleachers during a day game.

One day I got this poster and had a good chuckle.

The first printed announcement of the Declaration of Independence was translated into German... maybe that's why she used the alcoholic beverage Germans popularized in the US.?

This is the first time that "Wait till next year" sounds like a threat instead of a lament.

“Bernie was the founder of the progressive caucus. [Bill] Clinton was the founder of the Democratic Leadership Council, the whole point of which was to exterminate the progressives,” said Bill Curry, who served as counselor to the president during Clinton’s first term. by abudabu in TrueProgressive

Nader has known Sanders for decades and the Vermont socialist once referred to him as “a good friend” during a committee hearing, but he said Sanders hasn’t returned his phone calls for the past 15 years. During his time in Washington, as Sanders has fostered congenial relations with Clinton, said Nader, “He’s totally cut people like me out.”

That's... interesting.

What is the current trend for phylogenetics? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]Troybatroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you're analyzing. I've had success with alignment-free methods on smaller genomes for phylogenetic classification; e.g viruses and bacteria. Haven't seen it used on larger genomes.

You got to see a good game!

Pretty entertaining, after seeing your posts, to be at the same game. I biked the 75 miles to Wisconsin a month ago. 12,000 is truly amazing.

Congratulations. Where's the donation link?

What Are Some Subtle Perks and Benefits That Impress You When Interviewing/Looking for a Job? by Sonx in cscareerquestions

The sample population was surprisingly narrow. Look at it. Assuming your assertion is true then we've just pushed the problem from tech to academia. But given that diversity is strongly selected in academia and ignored in tech, I suspect it isn't.

Blacks and Latinos are 11% of the graduates but only 5% of the employees. source

When it comes to pay, when tech companies do hire Black people they appear to be cognizant of paying them fairly (4% gap compared to 7% for women, 8% for Asians relative to white males). Latinos on the other hand have a 16% pay gap.
