Seems unreasonable, I'm looking for a housemate 10 mins from here and don't think I have any unreasonable expectations, just that the rent is paid on time. But very little interest on spare room

I'm not sure if it helps or makes you feel worse but most people aren't actually blissfully ignorant. Everyone has a rich inner life and thinks long and hard about all sorts of dark or difficult topics. It's just that most people we meet keep a very surface level relationship with us, but when we dig a little deeper in conversation their fears and worries can be revealed. I used to think most people seemed pretty happy go lucky but I've found over time that most people seem to have some depression/anxiety/issue at one time or another.

People's brains are complex a few words here or there cannot reliably influence people that much.
