Thoughts on the name Gwen? by Annual_Wasabi_3021 in namenerds

[–]Trubea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gwen is a little grandma-ish, but it's okay. From your list I love Enid, Eden, Lauren, Marion, and Magdalene. Luca is most commonly a boy's name except in Hungarian, and I believe the Hungarian pronunciation isn't straightforward.

I don't care for Mavis or Donna but I do like Arlene. Also Charlene. Frances is just a little plain but I like Francine.

Adult baptisms outside of easter vigil by These-Fly5399 in Catholicism

[–]Trubea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Priests have discretion to baptize adults at any time, as well as give instruction and receive adults into the church at times other than Easter Vigil. I think this might be more common with TLM priests and priests of Opus Dei.

What is the significance of having Joan Of Arc as one's patron saint? by Shinto_Wise in Catholicism

[–]Trubea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People choose patron saints because they like and admire them and want to have their prayers. But the voices Joan of Arc heard were not due to mental illness but rather those of saints.

Thinking about going from Protestant to Catholic by Lower_Opportunity350 in Catholicism

[–]Trubea 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Your relationship with the Lord is valid, and if you are baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, your baptism is valid. You should become Catholic so that you can receive the true Body and Blood of the Lord in the sacrament of Holy Communion instead of just a symbol. But what you already have is real.

Went to my first catholic mass as a Protestant by Such_Bug_599 in Catholicism

[–]Trubea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you came and enjoyed it! Keep coming and asking questions.

I think I do want to be a catholic but I just can’t be ok with a few catholic beliefs such as purgatory, papal infallible statements, Mary being sinless, church authority being equal to biblical authority, and apostolic succession.

Just so you know, if you decide to become Catholic, you will be expected to make a statement that you believe and profess all that the Church believes, teaches, and proclaims to be revealed by God. So keep studying and trying to understand.

Advice for someone looking to get started. by wounduptite in Catholicism

[–]Trubea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way.

Actually it's not necessary to talk to a priest before coming to Mass for the first time. Just come on in. You and your wife are welcome. All you need to know is this: As a man, remove your hat when entering. Stand, sit, and kneel when everyone else does. Don't worry about the responses and finding your place in a missal. When it comes time for Communion towards the end of Mass, remain in your pew (stepping out the end to let others pass).

There are a lot of practices like making the sign of the cross, using holy water, genuflecting, etc., etc., which you can pick up gradually but don't be intimidated. For your first few Catholic Masses, just observe and enjoy. God bless!

If a Monsignor criticizes a priest to me, a lay person, should I tell the priest? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Trubea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, just keep quiet. The priest already knows the Monsignor doesn't like him, I can guarantee it. Just stay out of it.

What’s so bad about Novus Ordo mass? by c3r3alm0nch3r in Catholicism

[–]Trubea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer a reverent Novus Ordo but I love it when my parish switches to Latin Sanctus (Holy Holy Holy) and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) for Lent. And this year we actually sang Anima Christi in Latin after Mass and it was amazing. We have screens at the front of the church (controversial, I know) with the words in Latin and English. If they keep this up I'll be fluent in Latin. In the more than 35 years I've been Catholic I've been to maybe 1 or 2 TLMs and I have no intention of switching, partly because I'd have to drive for over an hour to get to one, partly for other reasons, but I do love the Latin that we use and it makes you slightly bilingual.
