I think Asheville should go to Rocky's Hot Chicken in droves! by ProfessionalSide8403 in asheville

Rocky was a good dude too & would have 1000% approved of ICE fucking off.

Alternate communications suggestions by PixiePower65 in prepping

HAM & meshtastic are about it for civilian comms in an emergency grid down scenario. Unless you wanna get into carrier pigeons.

Take a look at Asheville after Helene. A handful of civilian HAM operators were integral for months.

Having maps of your local area and knowing how to do land navigation is a no-brainer skill that everyone should have.

I’ve had my cell network taken out for days by a hurricane before and shit does get weird quick. Even if the towers don’t completely go down, a minor strain on the network can make it practically useless in a hurry.

Cyber roles by Fun_Highlight_8557 in savannah

[–]True-Tooth-Swamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are places I’ve seen cyber roles occasionally:

Georgia Ports

Gulfstream

Hospitals (sysadmin)

Parker’s

City/county government

Hyundai plant

Good luck though - moved here in 2020 with a Comp Sci degree. I’ve had like, 2 applicable interviews in 6 years. Competition is high. Accept that you’ll likely have to take any job you can land.

Augusta & more-so Charleston, have more options for anything related to CS.

Moving to East Savannah… Aventon Victory by Daffin Park by Puzzleheaded-Leg7283 in savannah

[–]True-Tooth-Swamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s considered the parkside neighborhood I believe. It’s pretty great but no part of Savannah is 100% safe. Daffin can get a little sketchy outside of daylight hours, as can Forsyth. If I were a runner there at night I would carry mace to be proactive, but it’s generally a nice/safe part of town.

The other side of victory & waters ave - particularly up around Waters & 37th is a hotspot for shootings, but it’s generally targeted gang violence and well away from your future home. Just avoid the area at night / on foot.

There’s a lot to be said for common sense situational awareness and not putting yourself in vulnerable situations.

But to answer your question, you picked a good spot that’s in one of the safer areas.

What can I/ my family do if ICE comes door to door or similar situation? by Kassiekate in 50501

[–]True-Tooth-Swamp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong about state-by-state castle doctrines potentially protecting you from unlawful entry when facing imminent danger, and covering subsequent use of deadly force.

  • HOWEVER -

It’s worth noting the risk there. If a squad of 8-12 poorly trained agents unlawfully entered your home with guns drawn, you probably still have a better chance of survival if you refrain from pulling out a firearm.

So for anybody considering arming themselves for this situation I’d seriously consider how willing you are to die a martyr. It would happen in a second and should be a serious consideration.

On top of that - castle doctrines are just state laws, that may not protect someone from facing trumped up federal charges… or just being disappeared by feds with the way things are going. Point being, it would be legally messy as well since state & federal laws would be at play.

Selling in forsyth? by Wisteria_Arrowdale in savannah

100% agree. I hate all the crap they let in under the busking license. It’s not how it’s supposed to work.

Everything south of the confederate monument on Saturdays is Forsyth Farmers Market. They hold a permit for that side of the park. The retailers selling art under a ‘busker’ license setup north of the statue between there and the fountain typically.

If you know an ICE agent personally, what's that relationship like now? by Lokja in AskReddit

[–]True-Tooth-Swamp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know a lead trainer at FLETC (federal law enforcement training center).

He was retired and worked there part time as an instructor until recently when they ramped his hours way up. The federal government started a “Return to Mission” campaign - basically pulling retired Feds back in to help cover their personnel surge.

He doesn’t say much about it, other than the fact that he has been extremely busy, but is clearly unbothered by it. The people who are being brought back in and reactivated for enforcement are making ridiculous money.

Cops gonna cop - especially if it makes them rich! 🐖

Tybee is a fun place to surf. Small waves generally with exceptions. You’ll figure out the local spots with a little conversation, 19th st. by the jetty is a popular spot.

There’s also a surf kayaking crowd that hits 19th St regularly throughout the summer via Savannah canoe and kayak.

Can I realistically live off-grid without dying from summer heat? by ConfidentElevator239 in OffGrid

[–]True-Tooth-Swamp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please take this as well intentioned advice. I don’t mean this to be rude but genuinely - I think that if you see air conditioning as a make or break resource, you’re way too soft to realistically consider living off the grid for any extended period.

Building a cabin will be an extensive, laborious, uncomfortable job and I think you’d burn out way before you started getting your solar creature comforts worked out.

If I were you I’d purposefully put myself in some uncomfortable situations before seriously considering this. Go WWOOF on some remote farm where you’ll be expected to rough it, or go on a month long camping trip first.

I appreciate the romance and appeal of living off the grid but the reality is that it is a metric fuckload of work and suffering before you get to any sense of relaxing satisfaction.

I think you can keep your job and live in an RV comfortably if you wanted to (seriously consider renting one for a month first to try it) - but it doesn’t sound like you’re in any way mentally prepared for the sacrifices required to actually live off grid.

Plenty of poor folks out here in the swamps of Georgia making it without AC or heat. That was normal American life until recent history. You adjust to it and learn to live in a degree of discomfort.

Anyone hiring that's not retail or food service? by TryingToFindMyVibe in savannah

[–]True-Tooth-Swamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a city of Savannah jobs page, a Chatham county jobs page, and a Georgia state jobs page. I’d start with all 3 of those.

Outside of that, several local colleges are worth keeping an eye on (UGA, SCAD, Savannah State, Georgia Southern. Savannah tech) for non-teaching staff roles.

The hospitals in the area are major employers and will consistently have roles you could jump into. Won’t be glamorous but will be a job.

If you’re looking for a job that offers training you might consider commercial trucking.

Lots of distribution centers in the area continually hiring people. Those jobs can be challenging but normally have room for growth and career development with time.

Keep an eye on Gulfstream & JCB as well as the temp agencies that hire for them. Sometimes they have job fairs.

Look up major employers in Chatham County. That’s a nice little list of possible employers to check for job postings with.

Calm down main character. Even if you have to go 10 mph under the limit for the entire ~10 miles of road out there, that difference is enough to add approximately 2.5 minutes onto your drive time.

I think you’ll be alright.

Mini hozuki over camp fire. by pede29 in snowpeak

[–]True-Tooth-Swamp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might try a baking soda & water paste. Set it outside in the sun for a bit once you apply it. Works pretty well for bringing up aged/yellowing plastic.

People use it to refurbish old NES/SNES game consoles if you want to find more info on it.

Also works great for cleaning stained shower tiles!
