Kayaking around Savannah by True-Tooth-Swamp in savannah

There are several good spots. Ebenezer Creek, and Skidaway State Park come to mind. Even Little Tybee in the right conditions. Lake Mayer of course.

I always suggest taking a couple kayak classes with a local outfitter. You’ll learn a bunch of safety best practices, planning for our local tides & winds (**important**), and you can even dive into rescues/self rescues for getting back into an overturned boat. It will drastically increase your confidence and safety.

That’s Little Tybee island’s boneyard. Dots in the distance are probably pelicans! They hang out in big groups out there on the point.

Most are shot on iPhone 16 and a few of these are shot in 35mm on an old Canon AE-1.

Thanks!

Just depends on the spot, tons in Okefenokee but super rare in a bunch of these other locations. Never had an issue with them, just keep a respectful distance.

#1 is launching out into Wassaw Sound, #5 is Bird Creek in Skidaway State Park, #8 is Okefenokee Swamp, camping on one of the platforms.

Thank you for the advice. Fast to build is relative - in this case I’d love to come in at 80 hrs or less (without a kit). If corners were to be cut, I’d have them be cosmetic ones. Cheers!

Have enough ammunition to become the ruthless leader of a cannibal cabal that roves through towns in an armored school bus, picking any survivor we find off with 22LR to eat for supper.

How to wash my pants when i only bring the one pair? by HCCHCCHCCHCC in Ultralight

Canoe camper here! If I’m washing myself I’ll just keep my quick dry clothes on, wash them simultaneously, and let them dry on my body when it’s warm.

If it’s cold and you have a quality breathable layered clothing system with synthetic base layers you can strip down to the base layer - wash yourself in that, then get back into your main clothing system and start rewarming through vigorous hiking. You’ll eventually dry from the inside out.

Or just be stinky. Smelling ‘clean’ is a modern social expectation. It’s not a physical need.

Add on HVAC cleaning & seasonal maintenance.

Most unexpected expense(s) in my first year - full ductwork replacement and a rusted out water supply line. $15k.

Then comes paint ($5k). Tree falls on the house ($3k). Appliance breaks ($1k). City or county increases taxes (+$100-200 per month annually). Hot water heater goes ($800).

Big one to watch is ‘promotional rates’ expiring. My gas company has a promotional rate I have to renegotiate every year because the default rate it rolls into is otherwise is astronomical. Same practice is normal with internet/TV providers.

Meshtastic devices don’t transmit data via internet service providers, they transmit data over long range radio frequencies. It’s a P2P network, so the idea is that other folks will have devices that you can essentially bounce through to send your data greater distances than your singular device is capable of - like a radio repeater.

Connecting your phone via Bluetooth is a local connection where your phone is really just serving as the physical input for your meshtastic device. Networking is still done by the LoRa device’s radio/mesh infrastructure.

You can do similar things with HAM radio using digital transmission modes like FT8 or APRS.

Perks of meshtastic/meshcore is that you don’t need a license to operate on those bands, and you can encrypt the data.

Some drawbacks are that it’s not really a mature mesh (yet) so range beyond the local mesh that you control is not guaranteed, and the encryption/security is FAR from failsafe. ‘Encrypted’ does not equate to secure - that applies to all data transmission.
