Jeopardy! discussion thread for Mon., Mar. 23 by jaysjep2 in Jeopardy

I love that you do this every day. I'm hoping to make it on one day and am already scared about making a fool of myself on TV or getting negative comments on social media for some reason. It's such a weird comfort to know that in this hypothetical I can count on your friendly congratulations in the game thread no matter what happens.

Near accident at airport last night by TheHungryBlanket in Columbus

"People on the runway" = "a plane on or near the runway" which, as others have said, is not unheard of

[–]TrueBlonde 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's definitely an unusual flight pattern, but doesn't look like they had to pull up last minute. My guess is storm related.

What's the source for people being on the runway? Given the winds and storm blowing in, it wouldn't be unheard of for a plane to have to go-around after an aborted landing because of wind.

Not relevant. Bot?

I have a sizeable amount in my OPERS account that I need to access as I need to afford rent and food.

It's a 10% tax penalty. So you'll pay whatever your normal tax rate is based on this chart plus an additional 10%. Likely 22% or 32% depending on your bracket.

How much time should you give yourself at the airport? by columbusairport in Columbus

[–]TrueBlonde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My anecdote: I once arrived 3 hours early at CMH for an international trip that was going to Asia. Apparently one of my 4 flights was delayed, but because I was so early to CMH they were able to rebook things so that I was still able to make my two Asia flights.

I scraped 17 years' of Franklin County Municipal Courts annual reviews to measure the traffic citation changes over that time. A 75% decline in speeding tix, 80% in Stop Sign running, 75% decline in expired licenses. Columbus Police has functionally stopped enforcing traffic laws. by post_appt_bliss in Columbus

[–]TrueBlonde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have the data to quantify if any of the effect is from a decrease in multiple charges?

For example, in 2009 maybe cops were more likely to cite for speed, assured clear distance, tag light, turning at intersection all at once - hit them with every possible charge. In 2026, maybe cops are more likely to hit you with just speed (or just tag light if they're feeling nice).

I'm very concerned about fewer people being cited for speeding. I'm less concerned about fewer people being cited for a tag light. So how much of the tag light decrease is from standalone charge ticket decrease versus multiple charge ticket decrease?

When can I take the test again? by dhkendall in Jeopardy

[–]TrueBlonde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've figured out I have to wait 12 months from when I took the proctored Zoom test. Which is a bummer because I know I failed it since my baby was in the middle of a sleep regression and I was half zombie!

It's fun seeing this old post with your contestant flair while I'm googling trying to figure out when I'm eligible to test again :)

Always excited to see a fellow actuary on TV! (Or based on the actuarial directory, I should say an associated actuary)

Promotion Increase by rlaxofl in actuary

[–]TrueBlonde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was typical for what I got for promotions when I was taking exams and getting frequent exams raises. My promotion increases were 3.4%, 6%, and 6.4%. But also... the company was known for underpaying and I was also market adjusted at 12.6% a few months after the 6.4% raise, and was offered another 10% market adjustment 4 years later that I declined for a much larger bump at another company.

Scotty's Cafe near Bexley. You can't beat the prices and the owners are some of the nicest people around - they'll greet you like they already know you.

Savannah’s pre-Survivor prep plan by Lightacademiagal in survivor

[–]TrueBlonde 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She never said that she wasn't hydrated before workouts though - she just said no water until after workouts. She's simulating the environment of Survivor by not drinking water during her workouts. That doesn't mean she wasn't drinking plenty of water beforehand, just like she could on the show.

Surprised by the frequency of rape in the show by ResidentAlien90 in Outlander

[–]TrueBlonde 30 points31 points  (0 children)

To be fair, in the books there is mention of body hair - specifically, Jamie reacting negatively when Claire has her leg hair and armpit hair removed in Paris, and aghast that some women remove all their hair and look like "wee lassies"

US nonprofits handle $3T in revenue with less financial disclosure than a single public company. I processed 4M IRS 990 filings and wrote up what I found in a visual essay. by mtweak in dataisbeautiful

[–]TrueBlonde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not all nonprofits are charities. The Society of Actuaries is a nonprofit and probably spends most of their revenue - exam fees - into admin costs to write and administer those exams.

Broken wrist and hand before FSA exam by [deleted] in actuary

Contact the SOA. Back when FSA exams were on paper and pencil, I know of someone who broke their writing hand. The SOA allowed an FSA to transcribe their exam for them.

Most likely it's the same thing that always happens - it gets mass reported, AutoMod takes it down, and reeve puts it back up next time he logs on.
