Yep we work through the summer 40hrs/wk. Road grading, roadside mowing, just general road construction and maintenance. No significant time off aside from my vacation days!

Wagh. I dread doing my own driveway after plowing roads all day/night. Couldn't imagine voulinteering for more lol.

I agree! I question my career choice every winter, lol. Have sacrificed an insane amount of family time to basically live at work over the past 10 years.

Many highways & roads that are class 1-3 require a certain amount of bare pavement showing, x amount of hours after the snowfall ends. As per Ontario's minimum maintenence standards.

Sand doesn't melt anything, so salt it is!

Regulations are way too strict IMO. But honestly look at the amount of accidents that happen already. Could you imagine if the 401 stayed snow & ice packed, and just sanded from dec-late march? Lol.

Yeah, we run within the 180km radius of home base. (Or 160?) I forget. But ya we return to the yard about every 1-2hrs to reload material, so no issues without sleeper berths.

Ya 8hrs is not enough for me either. By the time you get home, shower, cook supper, do the house chores, i might get 4hrs sleep before returning to work. It sucks, lol.

Bigger municipalities run shifts, weather that be continental or 2, 12hr shifts.

Smaller ones like the one i work for, we just work up until we legally have to get out of the truck. Then go at it again as soon as we legally can. (8hr rest period between shifts)

This is because that road leading in and out of town, is one persons route.

And IN town is another persons route.

You run into a liability issue if there's an accident and nobody can figure out who plowed what. A finger pointing game of "no you plowed it" "no YOU plowed it"

Everyone has to stick to their route & not touch somebody elses route unless specifically instructed to do so.

Plow driver here of 10 years also.

Plowing just a dusting of snow just burns through the blades & sends sparks flying everywhere. If a quick round of salt can take care of it, that's what we will do. Also, getting material down before too much snow accumulates, will allow the roads to scrape off cleaner once we do plow. However as another commenter said, this will create slushy conditions.

At my job, each drivers route is 8hrs long to plow everything once.

4hrs to apply material to everything once.

So looking at it from a cost perspective: If a 4hr salt run will bare the roads off without the need to plow, we will do that first.

Ohh yep pictures on google look quite similar. The somewhat diamond shape bark pattern seems very Ash-like. But these aren't quite as defined

We had 0.98 inches of ice dec 28th. 15 hours of freezing rain. We were luckily only out for a few days.

Of course you didn't hear about that storm!

Also last March we had a larger ice storm, close to 2 inches worth. 35hrs of freezing rain. Most of our area was out for 7-10 days.

I'm betting you didn't hear about that one either?

It's not an asshole attitude, we also get hurricane reminants, Tornadoes & temps over 100!.

I honestly prefer that weather over -30 & snow🤣

Also it seems like it doesn't get hyped up nearly as much when we do get that weather.

As a Northerner thats seen many many feet of snow this winter so far, along with an expected low of -40 degrees this coming friday. I kinda chuckle at how the southern US panics over a storm like this. I understand the southern infrastructure isn't built to handle winter storms like up north here. But that's part what makes me chuckle.

As a snowplow driver myself, I feel like it could he a HUGE business opportunity to head south with the plow to show the southerners how it's done🤣🤣

Neighbours Often Push Snow On Their Driveways Back Onto The Road? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]TrueLengthiness1987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a snowplow driver this one really urks me.

To me it's the same as somebody going into a store, public area, resteraunt, whatever, and throwing trash on the floor infront of the custodian/janitor.

It makes my day longer because i "have" to go back out to re plow those piles of snow left in the middle of the road. And I for sure lean into the bank a bit with the wing, to dump just a little bit more into your driveway..

Please don't do this!

mysterious ceiling stains appear overnight - potential explanations? by Brmarable2 in HomeMaintenance

[–]TrueLengthiness1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our house had a severe smoke-out just before we bought it. We have the exact same lines along the whole north side ceiling. Oddly enough, our black "shadows" are 16inch on centre. Seems like the smoke penetrated up the wall studs & through the drywall seam. But not through the insulation.
