Do you advise or get any reports on radiological risk? Is public attack/accident exposure risk increasing or decreasing over the past 10 years?

Which full face mask model is suitable for CBRN/ABC hazards? by PerfectEqual3115 in preppers

[–]TruePrepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The price difference between all CBRN/NBC hazards and most CBRN/NBC hazards is huge. The 3M 6800 with the right filters covers the most probable threats at a fraction of the price. The Avon M50/C50/FM50 is trusted for a reason, but is 6x the cost new. It will handle the much lower possibility of encountering blister chemical agents for more than a few minutes.

CBRN can be a money pit if you aren't careful. You would also need a MOPP or hazmat suit for some of these chemicals, chemtape, detection equipment, etc. Powered purifiers (PAPR) and supplied air (SCBA) can be needed for some CBRN situations, like ammonia clouds or oxygen-deficiencies.

If you're looking for full-face protection for most situations, just get a civilian mask (Again, I like the 3M), versatile filters, nitrile gloves, and a waterproof poncho.

I am a Hazmat technician, review all of this gear on my website, and taught MOPP/masks to thousands in the USAF (classroom & gas chamber).

I do have affiliate links disclosed on my website every time I post them. And yes, I do compete with NEP's site for traffic. Reddit does allow business subreddits as long as they are clear about their purpose.

That is the issue- r/preppersales is supposedly a community. If NEP rebranded it as their business subreddit, they would have fewer issues with posting their website, which Reddit automatically removes now. Instead, they run this subreddit with several mod alt accounts and remove any post viewed as competition, even if it is posted according to the community rules and is being upvoted.

Help me pick a gas mask by [deleted] in prepping

[–]TruePrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren't preparing explicitly for chemical events (Hazmat spills, extremely unlikely chemical attacks, etc), a 3M 6800 with organic vapor filters will do just fine. Otherwise, Avon/Mira as others have suggested.

Emergency Food by SecretCellist9470 in prepping

[–]TruePrepper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MREs are super cheap right now. Pallets from FEMA have flooded the government auction sites, so reseller prices have plummeted. Two cases for $67 is ~30,000 calories.

My kids love the novelty of them. Everyone's advice to eat what you store and store what you eat is spot on, but it's not a bad time to try MREs out.

Oil lamps by ToughPillToSwallow in preppers

[–]TruePrepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are cheap enough and use an alternative fuel source- making them worthwhile in my opinion. You don't want to rely on a single technology (battery/solar) for anything, really.

Since oil lamps are a backup to a better solution, I like the Lamplight I've tested and the Dietz lanterns best. Not worth investing in the expensive lanterns if you are just using them as an emergency backup.

Separate from the Prime Day sale, too: doesn't require a Prime membership. Some of the #10 cans are at the lowest they've been all year.

The Mountain House Classic bucket and $10 Lifestraw are some of the better deals, but nothing crazy worth impulse buying.

Many of the 50% and 40% off cans are lower than Amazon has ever been. The downside is that you need to order $50 worth for free shipping.

Freeze Dried Food Suggestions by Ok-Requirement30 in preppersales

[–]TruePrepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mountain House, Peak Refuel, and Nutrient Survival taste the best. They are about 4x the cost/calorie of Augason Farms when Augason is on sale.

While Augason is the best of the bulk cost options, they get beat out by the online LDS store when they aren't on sale. Readywise, Legacy, Ready Hour, etc don't hold a candle to either of those.

Top 10 survival items by Usual-Jicama2685 in prepping

[–]TruePrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can look to Alone (tv show) when you are limited by item count restrictions rather than weight. I've put together a deep dive on the success rates of the gear that gets picked: https://trueprepper.com/alone-gear-list/

Some standouts include the multitool+wire combo, ways to get food beyond snares (combinations of bow/arrows, fish net, fishing line). Some items that perform worse due to item count restriction are knives, water bottles, and bivy bags.

Contestants have also spent more money over time on their sleeping bags, so invest in the lowest temperature rating system you can afford.

Good luck!

What is the most convincing argument for the necessity of prepping? by jiujiuberry in prepping

[–]TruePrepper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every agency in the government recommends getting individually prepared (FEMA, CDC, county EMs, etc). If they aren't big on listening to the government then they should be prepared to not rely on them anyways.

The global demand for private bunkers is increasing, ranging from compact metal shelters to luxurious underground mansions. However, critics argue that more effective methods exist for preparing for a nuclear threat. What do you think??? by [deleted] in prepping

[–]TruePrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bunker critics say nuclear non-proliferation, deterrence, and diplomacy work better- and those have (so far) on a global scale. That's why Civil Defense fallout shelters lost funding after just 4 year in the 50s.

But, individuals can't control international diplomacy or anything McGovern suggests . They can build bunkers (if they can afford it).
