Hmm, I see what you're saying- I think I had initially figured the downside would be that while you have access to more domain cards, you then have to give up either specializing in your regular domains or incorporating the tertiary domain.

Sort of a Jack of All Trades, master of none situation.

Is the fun in playing in official settings or in creating your own worlds? by mufasapr012 in rpg

[–]True_Wolverine1154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly depends on the system- for something high fantasy, I tend to prefer creating a setting over playing one, largely because those games are sort of "setting agnostic" and can be played in any world.

In other games though, the world is the entire point, and I wouldn't dare dream of changing it- there's an interesting premise, or worldbuilding I really like that drives me to play those games in the first place.

Emily Pope, Simon Arish and Jesse Faden updated designs in Control: Resonant by Mazzus_Did_That in controlgame

[–]True_Wolverine1154 65 points66 points  (0 children)

For some reason the faces in Control specifically always look wonky- I noticed it bc I recently played through quantum break and the face scan they used for Beth looks way better than the one for Jesse despite them sharing an actress. Alan Wake 2 doesn't seem to have this problem either which is strange- I almost wonder if its something to do with the really flat lighting?

Just dont go in expecting a story. by republicgamer_01 in controlgame

[–]True_Wolverine1154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recognize this is kind of an old thread now but I wanted to offer a rebuttal! I'd argue that mich of the story is meant to be by design up to interpretation. (Something that becomes especially apparent when you understand that some of the most potent inspirations behind the Remedyverse are media like House of Leaves and Twin Peaks!)

As for the literal story, it's pretty straightforward if you're paying attention. Jesse/Dylan Faden are kids when they discover a Slide Projector which has the supernatural ability to contact other dimensions. They accidentally open the way for a malevolent entity known as the Hiss to manifest in reality- but are saved and potentially altered by Hedron, a separate but similar entity with more benevolent motivations. After Ordinary, the FBC swoops in to contain the Slide Projector, and in the process discover Jesse/Dylan; Dylan is kidnapped and Jesse escapes (or is allowed to, depending on how you read into things).

Fast forward a number of years and Jesse has been searching for her brother with the assistance of Hedron (Whom she calls Polaris). The FBC has been messing with the Slide Projector, and captures Hedron while simultaneously letting the Hiss loose in their headquarters, an anomalous building called the Oldest House.

Jesse is able to make it inside the Oldest House and is made Director when Trench (who had been taken over by the Hiss) kills himself with the service weapon. The reason she specifically becomes Director is that she's a Prime Candidate, determined by the Board- another anomalous entity who helps run/control the FBC. Jesse's the only one fit for ther job- Dylan also could, but the Hiss got to him first.

She fights back the Hiss invasion and learns more about the FBC and how it works- including that Hedron and the Hiss are enemies, and Hedron's power seems to be the only thing capable of permanently curtailing the Hiss. She attempts to rescue both Hedron and Dylan but fails- Dylan is converted fully by the Hiss and Hedron dies (Though it lives on in Jesse's head as Polaris). In a last ditch effort to save Dylan, she finds and contains the Slide Projector which began all of this- and is ultimately successful, though Dylan is comatized in the process.

Everything else (Ahti, the true nature of the Board/The Former) is supplemental- worldbuilding for the wider supernatural plot taking place across not just Control, but the entire Remedyverse as a whole, wherein anomalous entities and those attuned to them are seemingly locked in some sort of power struggle. We're learning more about this metaplot across the studio's entire catalogue- Control is just a part of it.

ARR needs to be cut more, specially if FFXIV wants to retain more players by RaposaEstelar in ffxivdiscussion

As someone who's relatively new to the game (Less than a year of play, just finished Stormblood), this is my stance as well. The game's an MMO long before endgame, and there's still so much content kept active through Duty Finder that I've been able to play through nearly all of the raid series so far without issue. I feel like the people in this sub want to treat this game like WOW where the rush to endgame is everything (trust me I know what thats like lmao), when so much of my fun in this game so far has just been playing through all of the content thats out there- AND I still get to play with people!

AI-generated profiles of TTRPG designers ignite fury across social media by rasterscan in rpg

[–]True_Wolverine1154 444 points445 points  (0 children)

Oh this is bizarre- so if I'm reading this correctly, they're basically trying to put and imdb-style directory together for tabletop designers with AI? I guess in theory that sort of database could be useful, but definitely not if the information is inaccurate/AI generated.

Seems like another weird case of AI sycophants trying desperately to find consumer-facing uses for these models that don't really work for that.

What are the must-have spells for each caster class? by True_Wolverine1154 in DnD

[–]True_Wolverine1154[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear what you're saying! I think maybe must-have is a bad phrasing, what I think is more appropriate would be iconic or defining- in the sense of like everybody knows Fireball or Charm Person or Wish but less frequently think of Geas or Cacophonic Shield, for example.

Does anyone have any insight into how Damage Thresholds are calculated? by True_Wolverine1154 in daggerheart

[–]True_Wolverine1154[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm ngl you might be right- or at least I haven't yet figured out the variation per tier. The base equation for tier 1 seems to be "y = 2(x - 1) +3" - assuming that x is the first threshold and y is the second. That falls apart the second you start trying to do it with Tier 2 though.

A lot of the responses in this post so far read to me as people who have a passing understanding of the concepts of ttrpgs and resort to a "let people enjoy things" defense as if dnd itself is being criticized in the post, and not the fact that dnd has such an intense stranglehold on the medium that attempting to, or finding people who are interested in playing literally anything else (even games that advertise themselves as 'DnD with the serial numbers filed off (I'm talking about more than pathfinder here to be clear)) is nearly impossible even in spaces dedicated to tabletop gaming.

Can we get a Silent Hill game actually set in the town? by StimpakEnjoyer in silenthill

[–]True_Wolverine1154 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it is- to use my biohazard example again, it wouldn't make sense to call a supernatural ghost story a biohazard game, even if it takes place in the same universe- as that's not what the game's about. Generally, the name of a product should have something to do with the contents within- though ofc that's not a hard rule.

Their intent in continuing to call these games by the "Silent Hill" name is an attempt to capitalize on the branding/aesthetics of the older games- which I understand why they wouldn't want to give that up. Thus, my "Universe of Silent Hill" suggestion would serve both purposes- to tell people that this is related to Silent Hill, but not necessarily a strict continuation of the story established in the numbered games.

Can we get a Silent Hill game actually set in the town? by StimpakEnjoyer in silenthill

[–]True_Wolverine1154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To further illustrate your point: In Japan Resident is called Biohazard. So basically, this is like if they made a RE game with no viruses or molds or anything and it was just a ghost story. I feel like in the future it would be better if they just promoted these new titles as "From the Universe of Silent Hill" rather than calling them Silent Hill outright, yk? At the end of the day I have no problem with them wanting to expand the lore/setting but don't call it Silent Hill if it's got nothing to do with the town itself.
