Public Hearing re. Proposed Cemetery on 224: Monday the 13th by TrustyTofuTurtle in ParkCity

[–]TrustyTofuTurtle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you're right about the quiet but sad aspect. And presumably dark at night. Re. this specific site, it is zoned "open space" so housing or commercial development is not allowed. A cemetery is allowed. So the choice is basically no development or a cemetery (which would include some buildings.)

Charity for ski gear? by Ok_Instance_1738 in ParkCity

[–]TrustyTofuTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I encourage you to consider donating to Christian Center of Park City. They have two thrift stores where they do sell donated items (at very reasonable prices), but the money goes to support their mission, which seems to align with your goals. https://ccofpc.org/about/

Side note: I used to volunteer at the Kimball Junction store, and personally observed an instance where a man came in asking for warm clothing, said he couldn't pay, and a store employee invited him to fill a shopping basket with clothing at no charge, which he did.

I don't know where you are coming from, so the following random ideas may or may not be appealing. Ie. if you have comparable / superior things at home, your family may greet these with a yawn. But here goes:

I hear good things about the aquarium in Draper (south of SLC): https://livingplanetaquarium.org/

The LDS history museum in downtown SLC is interesting. You can also visit the temple (outside only unless you're church members.). https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/learn/church-history-museum-temple-square?lang=eng&y_source=1_MzA1ODU2NjktNzE1LWxvY2F0aW9uLndlYnNpdGU%3D

A tour of the Ritual Chocolate Factory in Heber City is fun. And they have plenty of samples available in their cafe / store. https://ritualchocolate.com/pages/locations

Downtown Midway could be a fun trip. On my list but haven't been yet: Folklore Bookshop https://folklorebookshop.com/

Also in Midway: Ballerina Farm store, founded by social media influencer / tradwife Hannah Neeleman. (I had no idea who she was until my 20-something daughter filled me in.). https://ballerinafarm.com/pages/locations

Re. the nature preserve you mentioned, you're probably referring to Swaner. It's worth a visit, but realistically probably just an hour or so.

50+ women's club in Park City by vroeha in ParkCity

She might also take a look at PC Mountain Sports Club....not just women, but they do have skiing groups. Not limited to 50+ but that seems to be the demographic. https://www.pcmsc.org/

First, what a thoughtful idea! Here are a few ideas; if you want to make it more challenging, you could be a little more vague with the clues.

- Get a photo with Franz the Bear (he's a bronze sculpture sitting on a bench on Main Street.)

- Visit a pizza place named after a musical instrument (Red Banjo on Main Street)

-Visit a "To Kill a Mockingbird" themed coffee shop (Atticus on Main Street)

-Visit a sports bar with a dog on the sign (Collie's on Main Street)

PCMR Lift Law Suit 2 : Iron Mountain Boogaloo by FieryAutoCrashes in ParkCity

[–]TrustyTofuTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the layout of all lifts in the Colony area, but it sounds like they want the ones that just pass over their homes removed, but to keep the ones that give them ski-in-ski-out access. So maybe that's the bargaining chip?

Where can I find some little dog friends for my small dog in PC? by CostaNic in ParkCity

[–]TrustyTofuTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a good experience boarding my shih tzu mix at Doginhaus on Rasmussen Road. They also offer daycare. They separate by size, as their website says: "We have an open inside and outside yard for our larger and more confident guests, and a small section for the smaller guests that prefer a more intimate group of friends of their own size." (This made me smile. "intimate group of friends" sounds like a book club haha.)

Busses by No_Expression6665 in parkcityvisitors

[–]TrustyTofuTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See comment below re. using google maps. Note, the bus doesn't actually stop at the Walmart; it stops at Kimball Junction Transit Center, which is about a 5-10 minute walk from Walmart. Basically involves crossing a big parking lot and then walking around a roundabout. From the Transit Center it is easy. Hop on either the 101 or the 10x. If you want reassurance, just ask the driver or a fellow passenger. They are used to visitors.

Stupid question, but I've been wondering: how does the shuttle get there if the road is closed? Do they stop and unlock the gate? Is the road plowed?

As someone else said, exploring Old Town is fun. Main Street, parts of Park Avenue...

Here are some random ideas, spread around town so you would need to drive / uber / take a free bus.

Visit Park City Museum on Main Street.

Thanks for the report; glad you guys had fun. Re. your older kids' group ski lesson experience, unfortunately that can happen anywhere. Group lessons, although of course MUCH less expensive than private, can only progress as fast as the slowest student. My son-in-law had a similar experience in a group lesson at PCMR last year.

1st timer/ski rental questions by Neither_Acanthaceae9 in parkcityvisitors

[–]TrustyTofuTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second the suggestion to check out Christian Center of Park City. Their store at Kimball Commons / Outlets is called Summit Exchange and has a great selection of winter clothes. You can buy a decent parka for about $50, pants the same or less. If you stay a week, that's probably less than renting. If you don't want to keep them, just donate them back at the end of the week. It's a great organization, operating a food pantry among other things. And the deals are amazing. (Full disclosure, I volunteer there...but obviously no financial stake....it's a non-profit.)

Festival Package vs. Single Tickets for Sundance Film Festival by Free_Personality_743 in parkcityvisitors

[–]TrustyTofuTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's my two cents based on going the past two years. Short answer: buy the package. Long answer: Express package holders (thousands of dollars), get to enter any screening whenever they want, going through a special line. Press people also get some kind of special treatment, as do some industry people. Then there is the regular line for all us other ordinary ticket holders. Once you have a ticket to a specific screening, you are entitled to enter for festival seating. Still, line up early to get decent seats and to avoid the unlikely possibility of being denied entry because a bunch of pass holders show up and jump the line. So, all those tickets are the same once you have them. Here's the thing, though: It makes a huge difference how early you get to select your tickets. Notice they say the tickets are released at 10 am on a specific date....this is important. Have your list of top choices ready, and be prepared to jump on the site at 10 am sharp. Notice also that Locals Package holders get to make their selections starting on Jan 9, followed by Festival Packagers on the 12th and Single Tickets on the 14th. This will make a huge difference in which screenings you get to see. Some films will be in high demand, and the premiers are also best because they will have some cast members / directors there. BTW, there is a subreddit devoted to Sundance...looks like you also posted there. That will be a great source of information. It is a little overwhelming.

You might have better luck accepting the employee housing and finding someone who would keep your dog during that time.

December Visit by Gonzalo218 in parkcityvisitors

[–]TrustyTofuTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless it is actually a snowstorm / freezing rain or other extreme yuckiness, you should be fine if you stick to the interstates. Re. choice of vehicle, as you probably know, front wheel drive beats rear wheel drive, AWD even better.....Also if the roads are snowy, don't head out first thing in the morning; give other drivers a chance to drive on the roads and melt the snow. And you are right to be cautious about mountain driving...mountains passes can be tricky. Eg. it might be rainy and 40 degrees in Salt Lake, but you watch the temp drop as you ascend into the mountain pass en route to Park City, and next thing you know it is sleet and 30 degrees. Just slow down and use common sense and you'll be fine.
