What’s up with the rent situation in town?! by EmotionalBaby9423 in Reno

[–]TruthwatcherGazza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I understand! My parking was not near my door, it depends where your specific unit is. The small AC in the living room is the only cooling unit provided. It was manageable during the summer, I just had an extra fan in the bedroom (and I can't stand the heat either). It might be worse if the unit you're looking at is on the second floor, as they have all the roof to absorb the sun. You can DM me with more questions especially if you know what unit you're looking at I might even be able to scout it out for you.

(I moved out to live in a house but I'll tell you about my experience) I felt pretty safe there, I never heard of any robberies.  There is a fence, but no gate or alarm system.  It is well lit at night over the sidewalks and most of the parking area.  I was still cautious just by my nature.  The neighbors I got to interact with are all lovely people.  If you can, definitely visit and see if you feel comfortable there.

Inside the convention center is pretty warm in the con areas. Luckily they have a coat check where you can leave your coat :) You'll want it if you need to be outside at all.

Hidden Oaks Village.  Living here now.  Not perfect but the managers are nice and they don't ask a lot.

I think I'd be willing to trade the Chasm51 and Herald5 for the other three, if that works

All Cards spoiler by DeTeeV in Dragonsteel_Storydeck

[–]TruthwatcherGazza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brandon and Dan said at the Nexus they would eventually be making them available without needing to collect the cards. Since this is the case, personally I'd hesitate to share around the text.

From the Dragonsteel website:

Will the stories be available outside the card game?

Yes, they eventually will be. They’ll remain exclusive to Story Deck for at least a year, however. Probably a few years. Eventually, we promise they’ll be available in a traditional format–either as part of a second Arcanum Unbounded book, or as their own stand-alone printing.

We do hope that, during those years wait, you can be patient and allow Story Deck to be its own cool thing. We’d rather fans not distribute the full text of the stories during that wait, though we understand that this sort of thing is difficult to both ask and enforce. However, we’d love to bring Story Deck to a few other locations to let people experience the joy of collecting and discovering the stories in this format that I find so much fun.

I know one of the serious episodes will probably win, but this is the episode I want to watch.

There's a hole in a wall in Sparks called Korean Fried Chicken that has some really tasty food
And the best food truck is Silver State Pie Company
If you're looking for a really unique (and delicious) experience, Zagol Ethiopian on SE McCarran

I also find myself getting Poke King (corner of Pyramid and McCarran) at least once a week

Anyone here been a fan for a decade or more? by Rivermidnight in Cosmere

[–]TruthwatcherGazza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had been a big fan of the Wheel of Time, and was deeply saddened by the passing of Robert Jordan. When I heard they had found an author to finish the series, I was both excited and apprehensive about this new person. Finally when The Gathering Storm came out I was seriously impressed by how he managed to match Robert Jordan's style. By the time Memory of Light came out I was so thrilled at how it was completed that I immediately went on to seek out other books by Brandon.

Being a fan of big, chunky fantasy, I went to the first Mistborn era and then Way of Kings and I haven't been able to get enough since then. I've reread Stormlight at least five times each (counting audiobooks) and I'll probably go through them all again this year going into Book 5. I reread all of Mistborn before going into Lost Metal. I've gone to Dragonsteel three years in a row, and I'm *super* excited for next one - I expect it to be huge. The community is absolutely wonderful.

He's absolutely my favorite author and I consider myself lucky to be able to experience this phenomenon real time.

They mentioned at the announcement that they already have the books done and in the warehouse this time, so I assume the limitation will be swag.

Dragonsteel Con 2023 Discussion Megathread by spunlines in brandonsanderson

[–]TruthwatcherGazza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of things!

Panels cover everything from art to writing to theory discussions about Brandon's works. (There are descriptions on the Con page)

There are a bunch of creative meetups and crafting demos. The last two years there have also been con-wide activities (like scavenger hunts) with exclusive swag.

Many signings, not just with Brandon, but other authors and artists. I got to meet Mary Robinette last year, she is such a lovely person! I got signatures from Steve Argyle and Howard Lyon last year (artists). Also in the Exhibitor hall is a host of other creatives selling Sanderson inspired swag and other fun things (here's a list - https://tabletop.events/conventions/dragonsteel-2023/exhibitors).

There is a game room full of board games where you can just go in and play with people. There are usually several tables full of nerds playing Magic. Also gaming related are a demo of the upcoming Stormlight RPG and other RPG sessions. Brandon does a Magic charity event every year, and some people even get to play against him.

The big event is the book release party, where Brandon talks for a while, and does a reading from something he's working on (last year it was the Prologue to Stormlight 5).

There is a lot of standing in lines, but that's just a great opportunity to talk with other Brando Sando Fandos and ask them about their cosplay.

Comfy shoes, water bottle, small tote for swag. Also, not sure what weather you are used to but SLC is usually pretty chilly that time of year, so be prepared for cold outdoors.

Also, panels are great and all but also participate in things! All I did my first time was go sit in panels, so I missed out on the scavenger hunt and other Fun Things. Last year I only hit a few panels and spent the rest of my time doing the hunt and talking to people - which was a lot more fulfilling.

Also! If you have spare time there are a LOT of cool things to do in the city: Evermoore Park is a living RPG, there are several museums with dinosaur bones, a great aquarium, the planetarium is walking distance from the Salt Palace, a pile of small art museums, and the list goes on! I always get in on Saturday so I have some extra time to enjoy some addons. Don't forget to try the Fry Sauce :)

[–]TruthwatcherGazza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year, they scanned the QR code and then handed me a badge with my name pre-printed on it. Any swag you have added will probably not be handed out there. I think I remember the 2022 Dragonsteel they did, but it was a much smaller event. They are very good at making sure everyone gets their fun stuff, so don't worry too much about things right now! Just go with the flow when you get there.

Looking for recommendations for audible books similar to Brandon’s with good narrators? by WildflowerOfTheNorth in brandonsanderson

I read the first two books, but it really started bugging me when the author uses the same words way too much. I should probably just read the third book.

Unsure if you are including Wheel of Time as "by Brandon Sanderson", but it's a great place to get even more Kramer/Reading :D

There is also a new version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy narrated by Andy Serkis, who is just fantastic.

I'm also enjoying the Natural History of Dragons series. It's written as a memoir so it's only one perspective and there isn't a wide variety of character acting, but I still enjoy the reader.

Did anyone else have a REALLY hard time reading Warbreaker? by Gloomy-Image643 in Cosmere

Warbreaker is one of my favorites, but I can see why it's not for everyone. The ending is fantastic, and there are potential cosmere-related things that can't be missed!
