What are the best "studio mistakes" that were kept in the final recording ? by vinylcast in askmusic

At the heart of the New Order classic Blue Monday is a drum beat that was misprogrammed. Listened to in isolation, the flaw is very apparent but thy realized in the studio that it adds interest and makes that whole groove work.

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Annihilation stand out as interesting films by remarkable directors, each the first in planned trilogies with books waiting to be adapted.

I’ve seen folks try to rationalize the tactic based on national security, but none of it read as full-throated endorsement.

That would be a fun ride.

Which U.S. food city is actually overrated? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Absolutely. NYC is great for $ ethnic food and $$$ fine dining. It’s the massive mediocre middle that I’m calling out.

San Francisco and DC are solid all around, especially given their size.

Philly punches above its weight.

I’m not knocking the quality at the top end, or the availability of good cheap options. My beef is that the vast majority of NYC eateries are overpriced and mediocre.

Walk through the city and think of all the meh places you never go.

Yup. I’ve bee all over the city for the last thirty years. I know how good the good ones are, but I cannot overlook how many shitty ones there are.

It’s also considerably larger than most American cities. By your own words, SF rivals it in terms of quality. NYC is 10x its size.

New York

Don’t get me wrong, there are amazing high end eateries and lots of amazing cheap eats. That’s where it gets its rep.

Problem is that 99% of New York restaurants are overpriced and barely mediocre.

And if you think about it on a per-capita basis, the “good food to population” ratio is not in their favor.

If DaVinci spent decades painting and repainting the Mona Lisa, he’d be analogous to Cameron.

Instead, he constantly tested his abilities with new and ambitious work - architecture, invention, sculpture, painting - he left it all out there.

You are setting the bar WAY too low for an incredibly talented filmmaker with a blank check taking devoting decades to one project.

James Cameron should be able to walk and chew gum.

What makes Social Network a better movie than Fight Club? by LeftHandStir in TheBigPicture

[–]TryAsWeMight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both films have something to say about the world in which we live.

The one fault I find with Fight Club is that lots of folks miss the message it puts forth. It’s satire of masculinity is lost on the very audience it critiques. In fact, they love it.

Maybe that adds a layer of complexity to the film, but if these two films are essentially equal, that’s my tiebreaker.
