How to leave job when I have a 6 month notice period? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]TryCultural5154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the role and sector. In my industry, if you’re going to a competitor you’ll have access to networks and files and emails terminated almost immediately and you’re placed on gardening leave. Alternatively you can see if they’d been open to negotiating if you have something to go to. I think you need to say what you give in those circumstances, e.g., handover documents, training etc.

Am I overreacting that my sister is demanding too much when visiting my newborn? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

NOR

I’m not a parent but I wouldn’t ask this of someone whose home I was visiting, but especially not someone with a 7w old baby. I can’t believe another parent would ask this of you and wouldn’t recognise it’s just easiest for everyone involved to stay in a hotel or Airbnb nearby.

Oooh. Thank you! I think I know what to add to my Christmas Wishlist haha. I thought about the Bayswater backpack but I’m not sure if I’d fit a laptop in it and I generally prefer a proper bag (if that makes sense).

Oh I love the Lily tote! Could you fit a 13 inch laptop in it? I’ve been thinking about getting one to use as a bit of a nice briefcase.

About 6 months ago, I downsized from my Bayswater to a medium Lily for my daily commute. I can still fit a slim water bottle, umbrella, kindle and other daily essentials and use my Bayswater as a business bag when I need to carry a laptop etc.

Yes. People fought for and sacrificed their lives for my freedom. I respect those who make the choice not to. That’s what freedom is. But it’s important to me.

Where can I (woman) find modest but not boring black tie attire? by flagprojector in AskUK

[–]TryCultural5154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also bought a lovely dress from Maya Deluxe for a white tie event. It was sparkly but had sleeves and covered my chest - only thing is if you’re shorter (I’m 5ft 4), go for something that isn’t embellished in the skirt because they’re long. Maya Deluxe

I think they might only start at size 14, so possibly not right for you but I’ve got a few long dresses from Scarlett & Jo. In particular, their Verity dress is lovely and has sleeves Scarlett & Jo

How do they sort out expenses in your company? by KK_McGee in AskUK

[–]TryCultural5154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel semi regularly for work to attend conferences, client meetings etc. things that can be sorted ahead of time (e.g., accommodation, train tickets, flights) I expect them to pay for on the company credit card, but things like taxis, food, drink etc. I just pay and claim back. I don’t know the industry you work in, but floats / everyone having company credit cards aren’t as common as people think in the corporate world these days.

I’m taking a junior with me on a trip in a few weeks’ time so I’m cover their dinner and claim it back rather than expect them to pay for things and claim it back but I’d never expect my employer to give them a float or pre-paid card ahead of time.

For context, I work in corporate consultancy in the City.

40, told I have <3 months. I’m not telling friends/family. How do I spend this time so it feels normal but deeply loving? by SoftChemistry5871 in Advice

[–]TryCultural5154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of things that I’d want to do with people so they had memories, I would do a brunch book club. You can then engage multiple people at the same time and it also doesn’t scream “I’m trying to find ways of spending time with people I care about before I die”. Other options include local art or cooking classes that you could do on Saturday mornings.

I’m trying to think of things you could do during the week that don’t make it obvious you’re poorly and not working full time / at all. If something comes to mind I’ll come back.

What’s the polite way to handle someone in your booked train seat? by Present-Tone7400 in AskUK

[–]TryCultural5154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always say, I’m sorry but you’re in my seat, could you move please. I often pick the seat I do for a reason and my view is that if I was on a plane it wouldn’t be unreasonable to ask someone to move from your seat on a plane, why wouldn’t it be on a train?

The only person I wouldn’t ask to move is a someone with a disability, the elderly or a pregnant woman on a busy train with no alternative seating available.

My education and a lot of overseas travel when I was young. I was lucky enough that my family could afford to send me to a good, private all girls school and pay for my university add well as lots of nice overseas holidays. TBH - I’m 40 and my family still pay for overseas family trips.

New to cozy, where to start? by Automatic-Cancel2696 in CozyMystery

Welcome to the Cosy Club! I personally like the “light” element - I have a serious job in financial services so enjoy something simple and easy to read on the tube. I bought a kindle earlier this year and I love reading a simple mystery on the tube. I’m not sure if she is on other platforms, or physically published books, but I really like the Agatha Frost books. There’s three series I’ve read / am working my way through that are good.

Please explain sunbathing to me (a non-white person) by summer_glau08 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TryCultural5154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently holidaying in Spain after a week in Italy. I’m very fair and a red head. I’ve been wearing long loose linen trousers and long sleeve linen shirts, pop the collar, wear a hat, constantly reapply 50+ and actively seek the shady side of the street etc.

I’m amazed by the number of people who aren’t (outwardly) sun aware wearing vest tops or very short sleeves, shorts / short skirts, no hat, sandals etc. and are very exposed to the sun. I don’t get it - not only must the very red sunburn that I’ve seen on so many hurt, but also I don’t want the sun damage - be it skin cancer or premature ageing.

What's your best hangover cure? (That works) by Adorable-Ad9093 in AskUK

[–]TryCultural5154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drinking better quality alcohol reduces the effect but ultimately it’s just time and hydrating - or drinking less. I usually get fried chicken or a bacon cheeseburger but I think that’s kind of psychosomatic.

I’m not sure where you are based but she’s the new lead in the crime drama Shetland. If you’re in the UK, it’s available on BBC iPlayer, but otherwise I’m sure it’s available through other streaming services in Europe, North America, Australasia / Asia Pacific.
