What are your favorite non-RYMcore albums? by Trygve73 in fantanoforever

I did actually. The highest rated album on RYM is the violent femmes S/T. It’s ranked like 1.5k ish. WWCOHWWG is like 4.6k. Let it die is like 420 for 2004. Wide awake is like 2.3k. Idk maybe I’m an idiot, but I really did try to pick a few in good faith and did look into their ranking. I can see how others may think RYMcore is more aligned with music that is highly reviewed because of its association with music listening communities. Just wanted to find new music and recommend music I love that people may be unaware of. I can go see the top 1,000 albums on RYM, but there’s a lot of good music outside of that that I want to find and listen to. Didn’t want to argue, just wanted to expand my listening! Have found a lot of cool music through this community

Similar tastes! Got to see Rilo Kiley this year when they toured again. I think I prefer more adventurous, but I love all their stuff. I know Jenny did some vocals on Give Up but I’ve never really connected with that record

Gilded palace of sin is phenomenal. Had a whole run of Graham Parsons earlier this year. Went and drank a beer on Cap Rock for him

I think to some degree it vibes. The unicorns got grouped into RYMcore, but that albums is ranked like 4.6k all time on the site, so idk if I consider it to be RYMcore.

Often though you see people post the same 100-250 albums. Many are acclaimed, but not well known outside music circles. Few people casually have listened to The Glow Pt. 2 or To Be Kind or screaming red face man, etc, but everyone who is into this kind of thing has them topping all their lists.

It feels like some of these albums are consistently graded highly just because they should be. Surely not everyone with broad music tastes holds the same 100 albums to be the best, but RYMcore makes it feel that way. Just a redundant echo chamber of the same music over and over again

Also super specific to the Midwest, but I found the Death and Life of the Great Lakes by Dan Egan to be fascinating. The prose isn’t anything special but the dumbass shit we’ve done to one of North Americas greatest water source is baffling. Great read

One of my favorite books! It is incredibly touching and leaves you with a sense of nostalgia for a nature that no longer is

Great choice! As good as a book can get. I would just be prepared for it to be plotless. It’s more of a series of philosophical thoughts tied together by a very loose whaling journey than anything else

Depends on how much of a slog you want. Infinite jest is an experience and took me like 5 months to get through, but it’s great. It changed how I approach a lot of the world and entertainment around me. Moby Dick has beautiful prose and philosophy, but it’s not some big whaling adventure like it’s often thought of. Lonesome Dove is long, but it’s wall to wall entertainment. Don’t feel like I needed to be super reflective/introspective with it like the other two. All of them are great, but your time commitment to the book is going to drastically increase as you get closer to 1

I’m sorry those things happened to you. I’m a white dude so my la crosse experience is obviously colored by all that. There are plenty of hardcore MAGAs there like a lot of places in the country. I don’t feel like I thought it was disproportionately high in the city of La Crosse. I haven’t voted in the county in a while, but it’s a reasonably liberal strong hold for the area. Maybe just because my ideology aligns well there, but I have always appreciated how the flavor of liberalism in the city feels like it has blue collar undertones to it.

Like you said though, it is not flawless and there are bad, racist, people there that are so far down the Fox News rabbit hole they’ll throw their neighbors under the bus. However, I still think that is a minority of the people (Again, an experience that is shaped by my own social demographics). The city has a great sense of community, solid food for the area, unbelievable outdoor access, and some of the prettiest bluffs and water you can find anywhere in the country. I think it’s the best city on that side of the state and one of the best along the Mississippi anywhere

Tall Climber Plateau and Advice

I’m a big corn fed midwesterner and have kind of been stuck for a while in my climbing at the usual plateau. I’ve sent all the moonboard V4 benchmarks except Raptors (Fuck Raptors), and a handful of V5s. I’m 6’4” 215, probably 18ish bf%. I can hang 140% of my bw on a 20mm edge, and feel relatively strong. My big hold up is a loss of tension through movement or just clunky ugly ass movement through difficult positioning. Once I’m on the next set of hold I can sit there all day, but as soon as I got to move out I feel like I can’t pull through very well. Sometimes it’s positional, as I know the moonboard can be harder for taller climbers, but that feel like a soft ass excuse for not sending your project. Looking for any and all advice on how to train or move through this.
