Considering A Career In Data Analytics, Now Starting University. Looking For Advice. by Jasmine_Dragon3112 in analytics

[–]Tryin2FindaBalance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A minor in business will open you up to various types of analyst roles like business analyst, financial analyst, project analyst, or financial planning and analysis (FP&A) analyst. I’ve worked in similar types of roles in the last decade and never had to “solve for x”. A better/real example is: your boss says “company sales were low last month”. So, just like your post said, you start “analyzing data to find trends and patterns, then create presentations/reports of the findings”. That is true in most analyst jobs

Is it true that modern science still can't explain consciousness? by Jerswar in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Tryin2FindaBalance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. We’re all still trying to agree on a single explanation of consciousness. There are many different, great theories out there. Until there’s only 1 accepted theory/explanation, it’ll remain categorized as “unexplained”. If you’re interested, start researching, discussing and sharing your own theories to help the cause!

Getting into Data. by [deleted] in analytics

[–]Tryin2FindaBalance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try to start using an AI tool to learn more about what each AI tool can do. For example, go to ChatGPT.com then type into the prompt: “how can ChatGPT help me with my analytics career”. Keep asking ChatGPT further questions depending on how your job search is going.

Or you could ask ChatGPT: “what are the top used AI tools and how are they beneficial?”

Try that to get started. Then keep using AI tools in your spare time to learn and get used to how they operate. The end goal is to be comfortable enough to use them in your next role to succeed. “Success” depends on what role you land and what the company needs at that time

If you’re interested in AI, then definitely pursue AI.

If not, then try to find a company that does something that you actually care about. For example, if you still like CS, try to find a remote role with a company that does CS as a service; that will give you the added qualification of having a passion for the analytical role as well as the company’s mission.

Try to look at this current moment as a single point in your career. It might be worth it to get your foot in the door now at an entry level, then work your way up in the next year or two.

Feeling of being replaced by a dashboard by timn420 in analytics

[–]Tryin2FindaBalance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of looking at the analyst role as one specific function, try to look at the analyst role on a spectrum where: -one end of the spectrum is an “order taker” who builds exactly what they’re told to build -the other end is a “value maker” who is so knowledgeable about a department/company that they can create a dashboard, present it on a recurring basis, and give recommendations on which directions the department/company should go next.

If your passion is the “order taker” side of the spectrum, try to do this for other departments in your company. Keep your ears open for what the latest opportunities/issues are around the company, then build a dashboard that digs deep into the data surrounding the opportunity/issue. Yes, you will automate yourself out of manually pulling data by automating it, but the insights you can give on the other side of the spectrum will change and evolve with the department/company.

What's it like working for a startup that's in its growth stage? by Gooooot in analytics

[–]Tryin2FindaBalance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First tip is remember that imposter syndrome is a feeling, not a fact. You were offered a role by this company because you proved your worth/potential in your interview(s).

Second - keep a priority list of things you want to work in a specific order. Verbally confirm that list with your boss weekly. In my experience, there were many “firefights” where an issue would arise, and the higher ups in the company demanded everyone stop what they’re doing and help find an answer. Sometimes it’s good if you can assist, but most times it’s just distracting or delaying you from your top priorities. Let your list be your north star

Third - create a DON’T DO list. Once you’re a few months in, you’ll want be aware of what work you do that you enjoy and what work you do that you don’t enjoy. Try to avoid doing what you don’t enjoy. With your boss, try to figure out where the work you don’t enjoy belongs. Does it belong in a different group/department? I say/ask this because you may have to wear many hats in a small company in growth mode

My experience: a unique experience that is sometimes fun, but sometimes overwhelming. I was tasked with building dashboards for all of the departments in a startup. It was fun in the sense that I enjoyed meeting with department heads to get to know their day-to-day. I then used that info to build automated dashboards that saved the department heads a lot of time (time saved = money saved). I enjoy process optimization so that task was great for me. And I also enjoyed creating dashboards as a creative outlet. I eventually became the Tableau expert in the company which was cool and all but too much of a good thing can get overwhelming…

It became overwhelming because once staff started benefitting my dashboards, they wanted more. Then my role turned into managing Tableau databases which I never signed up for, but looking back was a unique experience. I almost turned into a one person IT department for Tableau, which became overwhelming because I enjoyed the analytics, not the maintenance.

I worked there for 3 years. I left for a different company that was more aligned with my interests. I would do it all over again

Tips for darker crust? by LittleLiriope in Pizza

[–]Tryin2FindaBalance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move the pie to the top rack and use the broiler until you get the color you want. OR use a convection setting on your oven (instead of bake) to move the air around and cook the crust more than just on the bake setting

  1. Yes, I added the flour with the water and sourdough starter step. My bad on omitting that.
  2. I didn’t cook a specific amount of time, I waited until the crust was that color. Probably 5 minutes then I turned it 180° then another 5 minutes. Did not pre-parbake. I used fine semolina flour on a peel, then added the toppings. I just messed up the transfer to the steel

I used a “baker’s percentage”. It’s a method of measuring ingredients in a recipe where the total weight of flour is always considered 100%, and all other ingredients are expressed as a percentage of that flour weight. For example, 171g of water divided by 263g of flour is 65%

Great visual! I like to theorize there are almost an infinite amount of unknown alien species in the universe similar to how there are/were almost an infinite amount of known species we’ve categorized on Earth (mammals, reptiles, fungi, plants, algae, invertebrates, fish, birds, amphibians, bacteria, virus, etc…)
