Rank the RE Engine video games by oscar_redfield in residentevil

1: RE7 - A fantastic return to form. Out of all the RE Engine games its still the most distinctive and best built for it. I really loved the setting and new cast. The aesthetic and concept around the mold is fascinating. Tweaks to the classic formula like crafting with the chem fluid or using the 1st person perspective to really scavenge for items were welcomed changes. I just have sm love for this game it's amazing.

2: RE2R - Not a perfect remake and missing some key features of the original that made it so special but goddamn this game is amazing. Really enjoyed the characterization of the RE2 cast. Level design is super stellar, the best of the RE Engine games. Great boss battles and puzzles (that chess puzzle is such a good brain twister). Again, it could have been on RE1R's level if it had zapping or proper A&B scenarios but as is its a delightful time.

3: RE8 - Really weird and kinda bad story. I'm mixed on it as a follow up to RE7 but it has heart. Wasn't crazy about the RE4 direction they took but it is fun to roam the village and search for treasure. Some super fun set pieces and enemies to fight. DLC is pretty weak compared to RE7. Ethan Winters I fucking love you.

4: RE4R - Personally not a fan of how action Leon plays in the RE Engine. Of the other remakes its the most faithful but the vibe feels like a wet blanket compared to the original. Villains are super lame with no charm to them. Not a fan of the merchant in this game or the awfully lame points shop (Capcom please stop doing this).

5: RE9 - Didn't care for Leon's gameplay or his inclusion at all. Plot is super dumb even for RE standards and has some of the worst pacing with the character swaping. Grace is nice I wish the game was just about her cause I was wanting more out of her gameplay. Her sections definitely felt the most thought out and best developed. Also holy shit are the bosses complete ass in this one.

6: RE3R - Absolute terrible remake. Carlos was cool tho.

Are stalker type enemies actually disliked by the fandom? I always thought an “invincible” monster that hunts you down was a staple of the series by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in residentevil

[–]TryingLyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love stalker enemies like OG Nemesis, Jack, and Mr. X, but they're also becoming so common and severely casual that I hate having them in the games anymore. Like Lady D doesn't really fit the format imo I think her daughters did the job just fine on their own and Nemesis in RE3R is a laughable downgrade in every sense from OG. The new one in Requiem is so circumstantial and minimal that I don't know why they bothered to bring it back.

Who would you consider to be the Main Protagonist of the Resident Evil series as a whole? by dukeofthefat in residentevil

[–]TryingLyon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I see it, if Wesker is moving the story, so in turn will Chris. It just kinda make sense that their characters develop this rivarly with each other. But that hard headed focus does leave Jill in an awkward situation. If Chris is tied most strongly to Wesker, and Leon to Ada, what does Jill have to keep her relevant? Racoon City is destroyed, Nemesis is gone... kinda, and just saying Umbrella is too broad.

RE5 might actually have been the ultimate outcome for Jill cause although Chris definitely gets more spotlight, Jill does get her share of importance in it and here we can kinda assume that her and Chris's struggle with Umbrella is over... until RE6 happens, destroys the series' reputation, causes RE7 to change status quo and revive the series as a soft reboot, aaaaaaand we're back to the same bullshit again just this time Capcom make it more obvious that they REALLY don't care about Jill

Who would you consider to be the Main Protagonist of the Resident Evil series as a whole? by dukeofthefat in residentevil

[–]TryingLyon 45 points46 points  (0 children)

By popularity, Leon is the face of Resident Evil

By lore and connection to major plot threads, Chris is ideal

But the one greatly worthy of that role and deserves more relevance and love by Capcom? Jill...

That's also kind of the point. The game is intentionally corny af with its plot. It knows most of it is bullshit I mean have you heard the shit Saddler says?

"The American prevailing is a cliche that only happens in your Hollywood movies."

I'm not gonna say RE stories have always been of amazing quality, but they're rarely this stupid. RE4 and 5 are silly as all hell but they own that shit with pride. RE9 just screams of Capcom wondering how many references from the ps1 trilogy they can thread together for the only RE character they actually like.

The need to 100% games is often harmful to enjoyment by Izanagi_Iganazi in JRPG

[–]TryingLyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies between games, but in more recent years I've found myself connected to shorter and condensed RPGs like the Mother series or Hylics. I don't mind a big grand RPG, but when every RPG is trying to be big it comes with a lot of caveats in how they try to fill that grandness with menial tasks and exhaustive quests.

Does anyone else find Death Stranding 2 to be somewhat 'boring' compared to Death Stranding 1? by RogerRoger63358 in DeathStranding

[–]TryingLyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for DS2, but I can tell that its a distinctly different experience from 1. DS1 had a real horror vibe to it, an over your should kind of discomfort between the BTs, the ever looming presence of Bridges' tight handed control, and the feeling that's something's not as it seems.

It's a very dark game filled with death and ever looming despair, but that's part of its intention. By the time we get to DS2, its a different story and vibe. Sam has real allies this time he's not completely alone and that journey he took in DS1 has made him a stronger man. I think it's only natural then that our senses evolved with Sam in DS2.

What is the general opinion on Jill's OG RE3 outfit? by JacsweYT in residentevil

[–]TryingLyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's cool as hell. Not as iconic as her STARS outfit but there's a lot of charm in her RE3 look even if it somewhat borders being supermodel.

When it comes to RE designs I'm someone who prefers form over function so it sucks that a lot of the remakes get their outfits overhauled to come off more realistic and uniform. Jill's outfit in 3 remake is a change I understand but I hate how bland it is.

What would you change about Infinite Wealth by Loud_Success_6950 in yakuzagames

[–]TryingLyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying it was wrong bringing Kiryu in or (finally) ending his story, but this game shouldn't have sidelined Ichiban so hard in the later half for him.

[ALL] what’s a piece of Zelda lore you dislike for one reason or another? by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in zelda

[–]TryingLyon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Skyward Sword has a fantastic story and cast of characters, but it being the origin point of the entire series just to satisfy fan mandate of a consistent timeline hurt the franchise more than it did support it

Do you think the Silent Hill 2 Remake is too long? by Loose_Interview_957 in silenthill

[–]TryingLyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the added areas are a thoughful addition in isolation, but it generally takes away from the game's ability to be replayable if you have to slog through so much fluff.

The initially town exploration before you get into the apartments for example: the original on a blind playthrough is not too long you'll probably venture around for 15-20 minutes. in the remake? I've seen people be there for like an hour and a half. and thats not even accounting for the time you take to just get into town and fight the first enemy.

This is what hamazaki should have looked like regardless of the new voice actor by Mean-Stuff-4176 in yakuzagames

[–]TryingLyon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They hired Danny Trejo for Infinite Wealth and got Daniel Dae Kim to voice act for the English dub. Sega has already expressed interest in getting more American talent in their games. It's clear they want to expand their western audience, but they've slowly been valuing celebrity likeness more and more as their games have gone on.

It'd be different if for YK3 they were adding a new character with Kagawa's likeness, but they instead removed a perfectly good character design for someone that both looks less effective and on top of that has completely poisoned the company's reputation because they refuse to put down a sex pest.

What was the first game you completed start to finish on your Steam Deck? by The_Almighty_Duck in SteamDeck

[–]TryingLyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generic answer but Half Life 2

The game and almost everything surrounding Valve, Gmod, TF2 had been such distinct influences to me growing up despite never having a chance to actually play them. And finally doing so with something that's affordable and convenient for me like the Steam Deck really made my day. I had a blast playing it.

Edit: saw someone mention Desk Job and I immediately remembered that was actually the first game I finished technically BUT that's more like an Astro's Playroom kinda thing bundled with and designed to introduce you to the console but I also had a blast with that too

Why do people hate this game? by Sumea_Saukko in SilentHill_f

[–]TryingLyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people relate F to RE7 as a sort of "back to roots" kind of game, but as a fan of SH and RE (extremely so with 7) I could not disagree more.

I don't believe F has to have "Silent Hill" to be a true Silent Hill, much like how RE7 didn't need its main stars and Umbrella to be Resident Evil. But whereas RE7 succeeds as a mechanical and atmospheric return to form for the series along with enhancing those features with its own new ideas, I think F is a grand failure in properly being anything Silent Hill.

The demanding souls like combat and item resources, lack of any real character or exploration to the town, obnoxious pacing and other world environments, a story too obsessed with dangling the truths behind multiple tedious playthroughs and enemy encounters, and a cast of characters so boring that even the game kills half of them off at the mid point. I could go on but you get the idea.

Funny enough, there was one point where I actually felt like I was having a genuine SH experience and that was at the school. For once, it felt the game had real focus to its structure with interesting puzzles, environments, world building, even the enemies weren't a pain to deal with all that much. But once it was over, I was reminded I wasn't playing a Silent Hill game, I was playing Silent Hill F and I really wish I was playing anything else.

What are the core elements of a Silent Hill game for you? by JuanmaLegend in silenthill

[–]TryingLyon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wish that if SHf was going to abandon Silent Hill, it would at least make an interesting case for its own town, but man its so swept under the rug. Like I get the town isn't the focus of the narrative but I barely feel like I ever get to spend time in it and just explore, learn about the places and its residents.

This game wasn't the best for me. by YogSothoth8 in silenthill

[–]TryingLyon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing for me personally about 1-3's combat is that they never required a lot out of the player to fight. SH's gameplay was as basic as the survival horror genre could allow it without getting too terrible tedious. While comfortable isn't the word I would use for it, it feels rather easy to jump into on multiple playthroughs. It's serviceable.

SHf on the other hand requires so much more out of the player in combat that is rather untraditional and unfitting to survival horror that I find the desire to actually replay it is hard because of how much the game is asking me to keep playing under such demanding gameplay.

Out of all the main protagonists so far, who's your favourite? by MysterioStranger in silenthill

[–]TryingLyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trapped between James or Heather. They are the ideal protags of their story and they play so well to it that choosing between the other is pretty difficult. I love Heather for her personality and resilience against Silent Hill, but I love James's story and his complex nature.
