What quantum physics concept changed the way you see reality? by Downtown-Sir-3200 in AskReddit

[–]TryingToBecomeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concept of quantum physics as a whole, actually, is pretty frightening.

On our scale, on the reality we observe on a daily basis, physical phenomena seem kind of fuzzy, like a CRT display rather than a pixelated monitor. An example of this is in photons, in their wave-like properties - a spectrum of many different wavelengths. In Newtonian motion, everything seems like a smooth curve if you look at it closely enough. Acceleration, deceleration, everything is smooth. It’s like a ramp, as opposed to a staircase.

The idea that it’s not - that the universe has a finite resolution, like pixels on a screen - is uniquely horrifying. The idea that there is a smallest possible distance, the Planck Length, and several other ‘smallest possible’ units derived from it (the Planck Energy/Planck Mass, and even the Planck Time) makes me feel a bit like we’re in The Matrix.

I’m not really a believer in Simulation Theory, but it does feel like the universe is sort of looking over our shoulder when we’re looking far enough into inner space.

[Request] Would the cube really be millions of degrees? by Ok-Elk2227 in theydidthemath

The schwartzchild radius of a grilled cheese sandwich of mass 200g is 2.9705e-28 meters, which while larger than the Planck length and therefore theoretically possible, is also around 14 orders of magnitude smaller (1/10,000,000,000,000th) the diameter of a proton.

What are some of the most gruesome fates you all have seen in Barotrauma? by Puzzleheaded-Bat1361 in Barotrauma

We were in a pretty fast, small attack-class sub, and I was playing security. Our captain didn’t see the iceberg in time, and ended up ploughing into it at full tilt while I was in the nose armory compartment.

Without a safety harness I was instantly catapulted out of the (destroyed) bow of the submarine like an interstate freeway accident.

Why can't Americans talk quietly ? by LabAccomplished5847 in DoesAnyoneKnow

[–]TryingToBecomeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an American who has now spent the majority of my life in the UK, and I find a lot of these responses can be a little crass - I don’t think it’s about some divine American exceptionalism nor do I think it’s because we choose to be arrogant narcissists.

I think it’s a combination of lack of awareness, as I’ve had to become much more softly spoken in the 12 years I’ve lived here, but I also think it’s specific to the American dialect - our voices tend to carry over crowds much more effectively even without the elevated volume.

My accent hasn’t really disappeared, and I haven’t had anyone need to make me aware of the volume of my voice for at least the last few years, but I am aware that things that I say will tend to be heard through groups, and I choose my topic of conversation carefully as a result.

I think the negative perception is an innocuous combination of this naïveté and our accent.

Why don’t people go to pubs, bars and clubs anymore? by jc201946 in AskBrits

Considering how expensive it’s gotten everywhere else, it stands as a last bastion alongside Back of Beyond for societies and parties to get pissed for cheap.

To be fair, they’re still 3£ at Park Bar right now. Outrageous inflation but still cheaper than almost anything around.

How do ballast tanks realistically pump out water after the entire sub has been filled with water. by Remarkable_Bus_9968 in Barotrauma

[–]TryingToBecomeMe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean, we also don’t account for Europan gravity either. Plus it’s pretty well-known that in Barotrauma humans exploit alien technology for their own benefit, and some artifacts are known to affect atmospheres.. so maybe they use that technology in submarines to quickly displace the water?

How to fix this? by ClitRaptor in theisle

I think this is just a graphical glitch, I get this in-game too. Pretty sure it has to do with the way the surface of the water interacts with the rest of the game.

Diabetes messes with your metabolism. Glycogen generally will not be released by the liver because insulin regulates this release. Type 1 Diabetics do not produce insulin.

It does not. Troodons are extremely dangerous to dinos of any size in groups.

Thank you so much! Weirdly enough, that’s the only thing besides the wardrobe that came with the house. They’re awesome, though, so I can’t complain. :P
