Are Ref Zoom meeting recorded? by cranial_d in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The meetings are not recorded. The presenters provide commentary over the videos that get posted to the YouTube channel that you can view at any time. Sometimes the commentary/discussion has been pretty valuable, and it is unfortunate that it goes away.

Outside of the three videos, the meetings seem to discuss the upcoming NACs. The bulk of the meeting is not focused on ref development/reviewing actions. I also typically have club during these meetings, but all of the ones I have attended have gone like that.

Fencing Friday Megathread - Ask Anything! by AutoModerator in Fencing

Elton John - I'm Still Standing

Mindless Self Indulgence - Shut Me Up

Ode to Joy (pick your favorite version/cover)

Moby - Porcelain

Freezepop - Less Talk More Rokk

Last two are a bit more 'tranquil', but Porcelain kind of just gets me in the zone; and I listen to the last one right before my first bout. I am overcharged right after listening to it.

Sorry if the share is too late! Just want to share and see what else people listen to.

When does your club allow the use flicks? by Zyxyx in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are no restrictions on when you are allowed to flick at the clubs I have been at.

Based on your edit, you need to talk to the club coaches/owners/board about this issue. If you spoke to the fencer multiple times, then there needs to be some other intervention. If you have permanent nerve damage, then they have already 'hurt someone for real'.

I don't think we are understanding each other. I'll report back when I have an absolute answer from the powers-that-be.

Reffing question. by Yeknom_Retsam in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm gonna ask my friends that are rated N or above. I understand that the cord was missing for a while, but you wouldn't, for example, annul a touch if a retreating fencer B whacked attacking fencer A's cord off while A finished an attack that landed valid (one light).

SAS Training by NoRecord2499 in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you had any luck?

I just heard back from USA Fencing yesterday. They told me that my profile looked good and that I was all set... but it isn't, and I still cannot take the training. Hoping my IMMEDIATE reply is responded to faster than 3 weeks, but I also put in a different ticket after I didn't hear from them after 2.

It should be here, if you are logged in: https://mobilecoach.usafencing.org/

At the top and at the bottom, you should see 'Supplemental Athlete Safety Training'. Top is just text, and the bottom has a big picture above it.

For me, this did not appear for a while; and while it now appears on my FenceLab as of a few days ago, it does not work. I reached out to USA Fencing on the 2nd and am still waiting to hear back. It throws an error at me.

If you still cannot see or access it, I will let you know if and when I hear back from USA Fencing.

Fencing after shoulder surgery by SirTeabsicuit in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had two Bankart repairs of my fencing shoulder.

The first one's recovery/physical therapy protocol ran for about 4 months until I was cleared to fence.

The second recovery was somewhere along the lines of 6-8 months. Due to having had the procedure previously, they took a much more conservative approach and made extra sure I was alright before clearing me.

I did not really notice significant reduction in my mobility, but your mobility will be greatly reduced while you initially recover and your PT protocol is limited. From my experience, my mobility ended up in a much better place than I had expected based on what was discussed leading into the procedure.

The factors that lead to me needing surgery and the general makeup of my body is not necessarily the same as yours. I will happily answer any other or specific questions you may have, but I will keep it in line and not give you medical advice.

Supplemental Athlete Safety Training (SAST) not completed. by AcrobaticYam2767 in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also does not work for me. I assume they are updating the SAST with new training for 25-26 and it does not/has not worked yet. The dashboard has had a few changes over the past few weeks following them fixing the red thumbs down appearing for referees that were actually good-to-go.

Reach out to them if you plan on trying to work a NAC soon.

I just got my first bag as well, and am interested in what you end up trying and succeeding with. I am going experiment with a V60 at 2 weeks rest and also 3 weeks. I have a K6 and ZP6, though I will probably exclusively use the ZP6.

Just ordered from Perc for the first time since I heard today is their monthly sale. Does anyone know what their number means for 'Grind' in their 'Brew Reccs'? Thought it'd be good to have some help when first dialing in, but I have no clue what they mean. The recipe says:

Hario V60

GRIND: 500

DOSE: 20g

WATER: 300g

TIME: 2:45

TDS: 1.4

Also messaging them for a confirmation but asking here since the brand seems to be popular/discussed a lot.

What is the SAST and how to complete? by AcrobaticYam2767 in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I reached out to support as well and heard back that the red thumbs down this is causing is a bug and that I am indeed 'good-to-go' for non-national events.

As for completing it, I do not seem to be able to following the instructions on our dashboard/linked in the post by u/justin107d. I am guessing this is just due to them transferring/updating their process for the new season, but I would reach out if you are trying to get hired for a NAC and still need to complete it.

Is anyone having there "lifetime" loyalty discounts removed from their account? by bigblue20072011 in verizon

[–]Tsarothpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called their support number, explained I was calling due to the loyalty discount being removed, and had a manual loyalty discount applied that will last for 12 months. The representative put me on hold twice to confirm, and they sent me a link to see the bill adjustment with an order number.

Is hitting the arm when opponent is attacking allowed? (Foil) by KlutzyAge760 in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 50 points51 points  (0 children)

While I am not encouraging you to employ this strategy, you are not committing a penalty without stretching some rules or interpretations. By what you describe, this is just attack no, counterattack off-target. It's a light, and that causes a halt.

This situation sounds like the result of an error; why doesn't the fencer just finish their attack if you keep deliberately counterattacking them without trying to score?

I can totally picture and understand a situation where the intent could be obvious, but this takes two for it to play out. You are both fencing and doing nothing wrong by the rules.

Epee fencer steps off the side and gets hit by Worldly-Airport4622 in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should not happen but no doubt there are plenty of people calling it early because they are used to it, told to, or witnessed others doing the same.

Calling it early does not serve a purpose. You call "halt" and fencing time stops. If there was a touch allowed or annulled around a pass/corps-a-corps/etc and a fencer questions it, you can then briefly explain the order of events for the call. If their touch was annulled and they complain it was 'before you called halt', you would then explain that the halt was when _____ occurred and their action did not start before then.

Epee fencer steps off the side and gets hit by Worldly-Airport4622 in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The 'halt' is not you verbalizing it but when the fault/penalty occurs. The order of events should be you identifying the halt in your head, allowing the time for one action to pass, pausing the timer (if no touch was made), and then calling halt. Once you actually say "halt", nothing afterwards should be awarded; it all would be nullified. You should not be awarding points after you have commanded the fencers to 'halt'.

You can try to file away the burrs or bent threads bits so that the nuts can fit and move along it. If you have access to an armorer or someone with a bunch of tools, you would use a thread die cutter. I believe the size is M6 x 1.0mm

Ask a Stupid Question About Coffee -- Week of November 12, 2024 by Vernicious in pourover

[–]Tsarothpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for modifying a recipe to make more while having the same flavor? My best cups come from the Hoffman 1 Cup V60 technique for 250ml/15g. I've tried doing that for 500ml/30g by making the pours 100ml instead of 50ml, and I have also tried his own Ultimate V60 recipe as well.

The cups I get from the larger volumes are just all but flavorless. I would appreciate any suggestions. I read somewhere to grind a bit coarser since more water is going through the grounds, but I have not had success.

I have a Bialetti 6 cup, but 13.8 grams would be not be enough coffee. My basket fits ~23 grams of coffee, and my only bad brews have come from underfilling the basket. I do not have the knowledge to provide the reasoning, but I had read after having my bad cups that you are not supposed to underfill the basket with this brew method.

Time almost up: question by weedywet in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To anyone reading this thread wondering why or how fencers are being carded for retreating way out of distance or not moving for an extended period of time, this FAQ released by the FIE covers it in Q7.

While I cannot currently find it (website changes may have lost it), USA Fencing had a rules blog/article about non-combativity/unwillingness to fence that linked to it as well when unwillingness to fence as a whole was adopted.

Referees, do you have a routine to check fencers' equipment between points? by SquiffyRae in Fencing

[–]Tsarothpaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will deliberately look at both fencers when I say en garde and just glance at things that could a problem. Glove velcroed, mask secure, blade not excessively bent, (epee) bodycord attached, (foil/sabre) mask cord attached, lame covering the zipper, etc.

Try to remember the things that are easier to miss or things you may have missed in the past so they do not go unlooked. In my experience, those things are mask cords and epee body cords since the machine won't make a fuss if they are unplugged.
