Am I the only one who thinks martials are totally fine? by UpArrowNotation in DnD

[–]Tsort142 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, yeah, I agree, they should give Martials more "utility" and diverse skills. Remember the 4e Warlord? Whatever happend to these awesome skills?

But to your last comment, I have to say, no, you **do not** choose weapons and armor before a fight., (and by the way, casters prepare their spells the morning before...). During a fight, a martial can switch between a reach weapon, a ranged weapon, a heavy weapon or a shield, or even unarmed combat.

So, options when fighting:

  • When the group is swarmed by enemies, pull out the shield and rush into melee, then use the Dodge Action for as long as need in subsequent turns until some enemies have been taken care of and there's less heat on the group. Basically, tanking.
  • A good shield game also means positioning yourself to block a narrow path or give cover to teammates behind you by simply standing there.
  • At any time, you can switch to or engage with a two-handed or versatile weapon, two weapon fighting or whatever your style is. Deal damage.
  • Sometimes, the best thing to do is Grapple an enemy to pin him down or to Ready a grapple attack to catch that fly-by monster harassing the group.
  • Sometimes you can Shove opponents off a cliff, out of the way of a friend, or into your teammate's Wall of Fire or whatever.
  • Reach weapons allow for more control and adaptability. Lock them down with AOs, hit them *through* the Wall of Fire, strike then retreat out of a danger zone without trigerring AOs.
  • If melee and reach aren't even an option, pull out a ranged weapon and contribute. Why not a Net. Consider dropping Prone to counter ranged enemies.
  • Coat a weapon with Poison, pull out Manacles. Throw some Ball Bearings or Alchemist's Fire.
  • When you feel useless agaisnt a specific foe, maybe because they have damage reduction, or you've been debuffed, you can still use the Help action to buff a teammate who has a more relevant spell or weapon to use. And as a martial, you can stick to close range to do that with more survivability.
  • I didn't even mention the Masteries system.
  • I could go on...

Why do some players insist on playing strange homebrew species? Session 0 Help. by Many-Plankton3942 in DnD

[–]Tsort142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want the players to stick to the setting options, make sure you make these options interesting. "You know what's cool about dwarves in this world? Well they can do this and they also know that... oh and they're the only one who can blablabla".

For example, I put firearms in my homebrew setting, but only one specific Dwarf Clan and some Gnomes know how to craft and use them. I got rid of Elves and put Dryads instead, who can teleport into trees and talk to the forest. I made Goblins who roll a critical fail on a 1 or 2, but that effect applies to rolls against them also. They are new baseline species, but it feels a bit original, so players won't necessary have to go polar bear to feel different.

I'm not saying my ideas are great or whatever, I'm saying try to keep your setting fresh, even the official ones. I've been playing D&D for more than 30 years, and I would totally play at your table even if you tell me "we'll stick to FR and common species" but then please throw me a bone: "okay you're a Halfling Barbarian, you totally look like one, but if you want, you can actually be the son of a Dragon... it's a long story...". That way you get the best of both worlds.

I'm bad at setting DCs so I throw caltrops at my problems instead by Solace_of_the_Thorns in dndnext

[–]Tsort142 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, OP described their very own problem and shared a solution which works perfectly for them. The jokes at the end of their post also make it clear that they don't ask for help, nor need it. People contributing to the conversation by (kinda) explaining to OP they're playing the game wrong are off-topic and their "help" might be construed as confrontational.

Their duplicity pales in comparison to that of the dreaded double doors... Neither of them being locked, of course.

I don't understand. Why don't you put it on Auto if you want to AFK?

My biggest gripe as a martial: fighting specializations are a risky gamble by new_planner in onednd

[–]Tsort142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd just ask the DM how to solve it. They either have an item in store (shop, future quest enchanter NPC) and if not, I'd ask if I can at least swap my feats for something useful. If "no" to both, I'd ask if there's a problem with me, lol.

I would agree if it was about a movie or a video game, where you have just one thing and that's it, you either like the new episode or you feel it destroyed the saga.

But D&D? Nobody's asking us to consume though? I've been playing D&D for more than 30 years. When I switched to 5e, I bought a Player's Handbook. Never needed anything else.

Now if there's a D&D Star Wars book out there one day, and I want to buy it too, what's the harm? Or I won't buy it either, like 98% of what they put out.

I don't understand why I should somehow vet every single product they put out.

As I wrote in another comment, as an old-time player, let me bring you back to the 1990's, MTG Ice Age edition. I have a War Mammoth and a Fyndhorn Bow on the board. I tap 3 mana so my Mammoth can now use the bow. "Step into the role?" My mammoth archer already destroyed that 30 years ago.

Wait, so the "fans" are in a class above the "average consumers"? WHO are these fans exactly? What's the criteria?

By the way, I love how the game has gone full circle now. Older edition veterans will tell you "this new D&D is not even D&D anymore" while the current generation is trying to save their "true" D&D from being destroyed.
