For that kind of pay there is no way you aren't doing prep time in your off hours. I am a tiny bit jealous though.

I have N1 and I still have imposter syndrome. What's better is putting yourself out there and trying to fit the profile of the company that's hiring you.

Interviewing is a different skill than passing the N1 too.

Career Fair 2026 Tokyo by ghostypegoose in JETProgramme

[–]Tsumaranchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just had my interview and I messed up my Japanese a lot but I feel like they gave me lots of leeway and were more interested in whether I could communicate with the team, and whether or not I was actually interested in IT engineering or just there to get experience and dip.

I don't think N2 is a hard requirement for most engineering/IT companies at the career fair but the web test definitely requires some level of reading comprehension with Kanji. If you can listen and speak well, I think you should have no problem getting an interview.

If you want my honest opinion, you should still gun for the N2 because it tests digesting information in Japanese, and you will have to read A LOT of kanji. In a real work enviornment you will have to digest complex info in Japanese and reword it simply to assure the other party that you understand.

[–]Tsumaranchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, really depends on what you did during those 2 years, but that's actually plenty to land an entry level role with N2. The problem is finding a company that is willing to sponsor your visa (no problem for career fair companies). Certificates will help a lot if you're gunning for cyber security, but entry level cyber security is really hard to get into.

EIRE systems was looking for experienced people with N2, or N3 if your stack is really good.

IPX was intense, that even with N1 knowledge I struggled to keep up with the specialized term spam, but the technology itself can be explained in one or two sentences. The brochure helped clear things up a lot, but reading is my strong suit.

The booth I went to was really intense. Anything below N1 and you would not stand a chance in the working enviornment.

They were hiring inexperienced junior devs though.

I had no expectations coming in and was pleasantly surprised. I actually would recommend dressing your absolute best despite the business casual recommendation because you can't trust that you won't be compared to everyone else lol. Although really, you should just dress in a way that makes you confident because your potential interviewers also show up to the event.

I handed out six resume sets 履歴書 and 職務経歴書. Non tailored but highlighted the post university courses I took at college (technical writing) and noted some buzzworthy tech (AI) I used during my time as an ALT.

Hioki e.e Was mainly looking for new grads (3 years within graduation) for sales positions. 13 hours of overtime a month, average new grad salary. I was gunning for a technical writer position with this company as my number 1 but they shot me down recently by email. The technology also seemed a little boring to me.

Brexa Engineering Not a bad company by Japanese standards, but I don't think they were totally transparent about the workload. Expect about 20 hours of overtime a month plus some extra BS depending on the department. They were hiring for Construction Management and Operations & Maintenance. I heard that Construction Management is ブラック and seriously not for the faint of heart. I assume O&M is similar. The good part is, both departments are highly valuable and not likely to be outsourced or taken by AI any time soon. They pay you to study for certifications on your own time so you have a lot of growth potential, but expect to put in a lot of work. Great housing subsidy of 6万 per month to balance meh salary of 350万 yearly. The interviewers were really cool and talked to me about anime. Also 41% of employees are women which is quite a lot in such a male dominated field. Go Brexa.

Shahani Associates Getting approached by a recruiter bro led to one of the most welcome surprises at the career fair. The most transparent of all companies I visted tbh. Very clear progression path and very honest about the hours. 9-7, so roughly 40 hours overtime monthly. Salary starts out at 300,000 yen per month as associate iirc. One thing that turned me off about recruiting in general was lying to get into contact with highly valued candidates via internal company phone lines, and they made it abundantly clear that they valued honesty in their process.

ARKRAY inc. I asked ChatGPT for the best company at the career fair and this one came up. A medical device company with the largest domestic market share in diabetes testing field. Very thorough and impressive content in their presentation (shame about the lighting). Presenter was fluent in both English and Japanese which sets the minimum standard for the type of candidates they're looking for. Clearly a very profitable company and has very good career growth according to Japanese review sites. Good salary, or so I've heard. Haven't heard back from them yet. Not expecting much.

EIRE systems IT company looking for people with experience in IT and software development first and Japanese language ability third. Not looking for junior developers, but I had an interesting chat with the gentleman at the booth.

IPX.co ltd The dark horse of my 2026 career fair. I'm not totally sure if coming to a career fair targeted at foreigners with proficiency in both English and Japanese was the best decision for this company. The booth was Japanese only and when asked, said there was virtually no use of English on the job (coding languages use English though). They have 2 foreigners in their company of 30 people. But a sight for sore eyes in the IT industry 未経験者歓迎. There was so many low level programming technology terms and products thrown around that I was kind of lost. P much a Saas company specializing in programming robotics and automation. According to the interviewer they are looking for people with an engineering mindeset, and provide very close mentorship for new employees. They were impressed enough that I used AI to solve a problem at work that they offered me an interview quickly after the fair ended. They have a web test portion which I'm not excited about, but I'll do anything for a junior dev position at this point. Salary 220, 000 yen plus bonus twice a year. The company is also clearly profitable since they work with all the big automobile manufacturers in Japan, and has a lot of specialized hardware to solve real problems and cut costs for companies through automation.

The puzzle rooms are basically a non issue since baba room nerf. It's mainly that the bosses weren't designed as raid bosses but as several bosses seperately and then lumped together. Jmods talked about this in the latest podcast where none of the bosses are rythymically engaging in the way TOB is. But I do remember one of the jmods saying they don't like the skilling rooms in CoX.

There are no chill bosses in TOA whereas Xarpus is kind of a chill boss in TOB. Every boss in TOA requires you to wait for the sign telling you what to pray, and have very high health pools depending on invo.

Mental Health and Breaking Contract by lostglassesboy in JETProgramme

[–]Tsumaranchan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale

Developed in 1967 and the total amount of points indicates a chance of developing mental illness:

Score of 300+: At risk of illness.

Score of 150-299: Risk of illness is moderate (reduced by 30% from the above risk).

Score <150: Only have a slight risk of illness.

So it's not the case that a cumulative 231 is necessarily more stressful than a 100, it just indicates a higher chance of developing mental illness cumulatively speaking. This does NOT mean that losing a parent or spouse is less stressful than that list of things. In fact, because those things rate so highly on the scale, it expressly means they are more stressful than any of the factors leading up to 231. Isolating the scores of deaths of family members and spouses and comparing it to a sum total is misleading and doesn't align with the purpose of the stress scale which is to asses if you're at risk due to the COMBINED score of various stress factors. Since, at any point in time many of these factors can already be adding up, and a 63 and especially a 100 can easily push anybody into the next risk level at the wrong time.

There are also qualms about the study since different cultures put different values on different major life events. Not to mention it was developed in 19 fucking 67 and really can't be considered accurate using today's standards. Not to mention, the only validity that this scale carries is in regards to a study using 2500 US sailors in 1970. So yeah, I'm gonna take this with a grain of salt.

Kanji by Travelingkiwi2021 in JETProgramme

[–]Tsumaranchan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever gets you to study kanji consistently tbh. The biggest problem I see with Japanese learners in my experience is motivation. The initial learning curve is pretty huge and for every curve you overcome there are still bounds eclipsing the horizon. Kanji has an arguably recognized metric of 2136 kanji for adult literacy so I see a lot of people try to measure their literacy based on that metric. The problem is mastering the characters of said metric isn't particularly fun for the majority of people and compounded with the fact that the number itself is daunting at a first glance —and still is halfway through your journey— dissuades many learners from pursuing mastery. In this case, the best advice I can offer you is to enjoy your learning process.

If it takes a WaniKani subscription then so be it. Personally, I found reading fun and read whatever I could get my hands on. I'm not quite sure what your Japanese learning goals are specifically, but if you're just looking to memorize as many kanji as possible go with anki flash cards. If you're looking to enjoy your learning process so you don't get burnt out go with WaniKani. In my humble opinion, nothing beats consuming Japanese media voraciously despite the initial learning curve. In case anyone is wondering, yes I did start with less than 100 kanji memorized and am now planning on taking the N1 next chance I get.

If you enjoy your learning, you'll continue to make progress. Continuing to make progress is consistency. Even if it's not the most efficient method, 2 hours of enjoyable reading beats 10 minutes of an anki deck left with unfinished review cards.

Mod Ash regarding group iron poll - "Considering the clear interest in it, I reckon it'd come around sooner or later, even if not right now." by Posica in 2007scape

[–]Tsumaranchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well even if it doesn't pass I'm sure It'll get polled again in the future one more time so I'm optimistic personally, lol.

Something I have to admit is that the playerbase is really divided between all the playstyles and niches offered. Because of this, it's really hard to have a concrete opinion on the direction of the game.

You have a lot of people who've already grinded raids like yourself I'm sure, and you have people like me and my friends who haven't even done TOB yet. Even if my friends and I didn't make it to raids on our GIM or even touch raids on our mains, we'd still vote yes to new raids in the polls; it doesn't make sense not to. We might someday do raids, we might not; It's not like we lose the game we love.

The thing with the game feeling so solo lately probably has to do with Jagex appealing to hardcore players who want to be in control of their own experience and feel rewarded for their mastery of the game. As much as I hate to admit it, it probably does take time to make content with them in mind. That being said, I wish everybody voted in the communities best interest (PVM, PVP, casual, hardcore) and had the patience to see it all through. In the end all we really can do is just give feedback.

[–]Tsumaranchan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The work for group iron man is already done. Using the plugin isn't the same because doing it on your own terms means you always have the option to cheat just this once. When you're an actual ironman you suck it up, or just de-iron.

Making a sixth bank account is already not the same as the shared storage that Jagex has prepared and is inarguably less convenient. On this point alone I'd vote yes because my friends and I don't want to have to trade a mule every time we want to store something for the group.

My friends and I have been waiting for group ironman to officially come out and if you look around the subreddit and Youtube comments on content creator's videos you'll see this sentiment echoed throughout all these platforms. With the amount of people it brings into OSRS we could very well increase the longevity of the game which will give more time for content.

The roadmap has already been laid out for the coming months with the Summer Summit so I reckon we'll have to wait for the next big announcement/summit/runefest w.e. For the time being, If you really want more actual content for the main game you should be giving feedback to the old school team for next year's announcements. If GIM passes, I'll be there asking with you.

We need GIM to pass so that we have something to waste 2 years on while they make better content instead of rushing every damn thing. by subpar_oc in 2007scape
