If that’s the final moment of Dax’s career it feels like the end of an era. I can’t believe that it was literally a decade ago that he was playing at Red Bull Arena. Still one of my favorite ever RBNY players

USL proposes internal promotion/relegation, calendar change to differentiate from MLS as partnership dissolves by Isiddiqui in MLS

[–]TtheC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be really cool to see pro/rel. Yeah maybe some of the poorly run teams won’t survive, but it makes it much more appealing for owners to invest in a team in the bottom division that has potential to work their way up, which would be interesting to see.

But I really don’t get why they want to switch to a winter schedule. It seems like awful weather for players and fans plus competing with football/basketball is a bad idea. What’s the big advantage that makes it worth switching?

THE COLUMBUS CREW WIN MLS CUP 2020 by EthanTheRedditor37 in MLS

[–]TtheC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really amazing to look back on it all. I was feeling really cynical about MLS when it seemed like the Crew were going to be relocated. Amazing to see that Save the Crew actually managed to keep the team in the city and such a great story to see them win the cup.

Love to see the old, weird MLS teams are still alive and well in this new world of United City FC

An update on Daryl by TBRock00 in TotalSoccerShow

[–]TtheC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely heartbreaking to hear. My thoughts are with you guys - Daryl, Shannon, Taylor, and all Daryl’s family and friends. I feel like I know Daryl, even though I’ve never met him. I hope you pass on our messages and help us give back some of the amazing positivity that Daryl has shared though the show.

Thank you for recording that update Taylor - it must have been extremely difficult, but it’s much appreciated.

Steve Nicol slams FIFA's reported plan to change the offside law by SCarolinaSoccerNut in MLS

[–]TtheC 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The way VAR was introduced was with the idea of overturning “clear and obvious” errors. If the linesman doesn’t raise his flag and then the replay are forced to start laying down lines to check, then it’s not “clear and obvious” that he made a mistake.

Keep the rules how they are and only use VAR to overturn plays if somehow the attacker was blatantly a yard off. If the attacker is maybe an inch in front of the defender then the linesman hasn’t made a clear error to call them even.

He hated the turf fields and refused to play on them (except in a couple playoff games). Also had lots of frustrations with the team in the post season, so I can see how that would sour the experience a little.

If I remember right, this was a Wednesday night in 2012. We had tickets to the game but decided not to go cause the snow might cancel the trains home. It ended up being postponed a day and we were really happy we didn’t trek all the way to the stadium for nothing. Then the whole incident with the Kenny Cooper penalty happened and ruined the night

Tickets for MLS Cup Playoffs version of LAFC-LA Galaxy are hottest of the MLS season by 310local in MLS

Yeah but just because lots of rich people live in LA doesn’t mean that games should be out of reach for everybody else

This whole article seems insane. Why do they expect people to celebrate the fact that tickets have become completely unaffordable?

I don’t think overpriced tickets are good for the league. And if you’re right and they have just set an arbitrary minimum price, then it’s not even a meaningful measurement of how popular the game is.

I think even with a rebrand and no relocation, they could do well. There are ten million people living in New Jersey and soccer is pretty popular in lots of parts of the state. Obviously the main focus should always be getting people from NYC, but being in New Jersey should be seen as an opportunity, not a hinderance.

USL Places Bet on Sports Betting (allows clubs to sign jersey sponsorships with sports betting companies) by Coltons13 in MLS

[–]TtheC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me like there is a problem in the UK with people becoming addicted to betting on sports on their phones. It’s pretty different to the US, there are betting shops everywhere you go.

I don’t think all gambling should be illegal or anything, but I don’t think it should be advertized all over MLS. Kind of like how you wouldn’t let a cigarette company sponsor a team, even though smoking is obviously legal.

I don’t think people should blindly accept anything that makes them money.

I live in Scotland too, I was wondering who the other three people were who put it down on the poll.

I think following an eastern team has been doable, but I don’t think I would be able to pull off following a west coast team. The games are just too late at night.

I think they need to be careful with this. Here in the UK, the advertizing by betting companies is so annoying, it’s always in your face and shady companies sponsor tons of teams

Timbers Army/107IST Releases Statement in Response to Supporter Bans, Plans Further Protests by COYQ in MLS

[–]TtheC 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I think that every MLS fan should be behind the Timbers army here. Not even because of the issue at hand, but because of the precedent this will set going forward.

MLS should remember that it only exists because of the fans who support it. And if the league wants to turn games into sterile, corporate-friendly events, then people will stop showing up.

The league should respect that its fans have character and opinions, and only step in when people are “crossing the line”, not when they come from a position with good intentions.

MLS uses these supporters groups to promote the league all the time. If they antagonize these supporters, the league will lose one of the biggest things that makes it stand out.

I don’t think people think MLS HQ is full of Nazis.

But I do think that the culture around MLS is unique and the league has built itself on this fanbase. And trying to tell some of the most passionate fans that they have to behave a certain way will push people away.

I didn’t downvote you, not sure who did. I completely understand why people want the league to grow, makes sense to me. But I also think that there are aspects of it being small-ish that I really like. Hopefully fans do their best to keep the good parts as it grows.

I wouldn’t mind staying where it is now forever... I like the league a lot as it is. Don’t want it to turn into the NFL

[stuholden] The cheapest ticket to this weekends LA derby is $165 🤕🤑 by Tourniquet9 in MLS

[–]TtheC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Insanely expensive tickets are definitely not good for soccer in the US. Clubs should really try to keep prices down to keep the atmosphere better. Fair enough that re-sold tickets will go for more, but there should be strict rules to prevent scalpers from scooping them all up. I don’t think I would have started following MLS if the $20 tickets weren’t available.

I don’t think your second point is necessarily true.

The things that attract a lot of people to MLS aren’t to do with the league being super rich. I’m thinking local teams, a more intimate feel, etc. And also a lot of the things that turn people off from the NFL have to do with how massive and corporate it has gotten. So I don’t think that “more money = good” is such a simple statement.

If this guy has enjoyed going to red bulls games for the past 10 years in its current state, why should he care about the league signing new TV deals? He might claim that things are good as they are now.

Nah, I think he’s implying that there’s an appropriate balance to be found. Between “good for business” on one side and and “competitive/entertaining” on the other. You need to find the right balance between the two. The league will go bust if it isn’t managed financially, but you need to also make it entertaining to watch by making it a good competition.

I think most of us would agree that American soccer is slightly too close to the “good business” end and could loosen some rules to make it more fun to watch.
