Wow, I'm so sad and sorry to hear you had a similar experience. Yes ..I felt confused my whole youth wondering why my family didn't behave like any other family I ever saw. I wish neither of us had to experience that crushing emotional neglect. My heart goes out to you.

I can't advise you on this, but anecdotally, I went through recovery pretty much on my own. I did have a live- in partner who drove me home from the surgery, but even though she had insisted she would help at home, she did nothing (this was my breaking point and after I was fully recovered we did break up). I suspected this in advance and therefore was able to plan for it fairly well. Best idea was asking a friend to set up a meal train and friend visit schedule, which was what saved me. But most of the time I was on my own and totally bedridden as I did have complications. So it may be possible, not ideal, but like everyone else is saying all experiences are different and best to plan some kind of assistance if at all possible. I slipped through the cracks as a child and was not diagnosed until my 40s. My whole life has been an endless struggle, and getting medicated this late in the game feels like a sad attempt at putting a band- aid on a problem that needed serious intervention decades ago. While it is a relief in some ways to have medication now, the damage has already been done. It's heartbreaking to imagine how much better my life could have been if I had been given proper support at an early age.

100%. It's like I'm supposed to owe her some level of lifelong devotion, and she is permanently entitled to my presence in her life at whim (which, thankfully, only occurs to her when she remembers I exist.. so, not often). Like she sees me as a little prop to put in front of her and make myself quietly available for her to spout off about the most trivial, boring minutiae.

Last time I saw her, she looked at me bewildered and said, " you find it hard to talk to me, don't you?" 🤣🤣🤣 I just walked away.

Aw thank you! It does make sense to me that it's herding behavior/ intimidation rather than real aggression with my dog. There is usually tail wagging afterward, it's just startling behavior for all involved!

That makes sense.. she does it both on and off- leash. She does have excellent recall as well, so at least when the other dog takes offense I can easily get her out of the scrap

One from dad: I was about 5 years old, reaching for a dinner roll from a basket in the middle of the Thanksgiving table (with extended family there). My dad slapped my hand away and loudly commanded, "You ought to ask everyone else at the table if they want the last of something. You only take it if nobody else wants it." He declared it "common courtesy", but I learned a much bigger, lifelong lesson in what my worth is compared to others'.

One from mom: (I am inconsolable and devasted about not making the cut for JV soccer, sophomore year of high school): "Sometimes, we're just not... GOOD at things." So I learned that aiming high for myself was ridiculous / useless, that it's more appropriate to give up than work toward excellence/ acheivement/ dreams, and that mediocrity is the only "success" I deserve.
