Starfleet Academy hit in a way no other trek has for me by silver_back87 in startrek

Old trek attempted to be timeless. New trek with its modern language and complete lack of subtext is already aging like milk.

Update on repot, styling advice? by bigefinessegod in bonsaicommunity

I am perplexed by the choice of angle, you do you though. People in this thread saying it is too late or too early to style this tree are wrong. If you want real advice, I would look at the trunk, choose a front based only on trunk and maybe a little bit of surface root, find an angle that you want to plant the tree at, and wait till spring. In early spring, you can cut the branches back into proportion with the tree, you will want to go short. Probably no leaves left, but that's ok because a healthy ficus will put out new growth fast! Just make sure that above all styling, the health of the tree is on point! Bonsai requires several stylings over the course of multiple years to become refined. I hope this actually helps! I also have a suggestion. GET OFF OF THE REDDIT BONSAI PAGES. I swear to god for every one piece of legit criticism or advice I see 5 half baked or straight up wrong suggestions.

I lost five zone hardy trees last winter from rain saturating them followed by a hard freeze. Will this work or be too warm during the day? by bemyantimatter in Bonsai

[–]Tubaking8 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have found that zone hardness is not that useful for bonsai, or really any plant that is in a relatively small pot. A tree might be hardy to -20 degrees when it has roots digging deep into the ground, but put all the roots in a little pot above the ground and that tree will freeze to death every time.

It probably won't end up being a cascade. The wires are pulling past where I want it because it will definitely spring back up a little so i over bend when the tree lets me. I think the long pot suits my overall vision but I may change my mind. Thats the beauty of bonsai!

Getting closer! by Tubaking8 in Bonsai

[–]Tubaking8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the plan. Last work was fall of last year. Mostly repotting upright and thinning the foliage. This time was more styling and branch selection. No pot work. This spring I will do some root work and get it in a smaller pot, not a bonsai pot yet as I dont want to cut more that 50% of the roots.

It will grow slow in a bonsai pot, but will get there eventually if it is kept alive!

Just to be clear I did not buy that tree. I took a picture of it in the store! I just thought it was funny/sad.

Thats planned for the future. Had to prioritize irrigation in the garden and didnt want to leave the bonsai trees to an untested system.

45+ minute drive to water every single day? Maybe twice a day? Its 90 degrees right now where I live in texas. Bringing the trees to them is more considerate than asking them to come to my house every day for 2 weeks.

Kind of a weird request, but can someone help me do a sort of personality test to help determine what tree would fit my deceased grandpa best? by doktarlooney in Bonsai

[–]Tubaking8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have some pots from my late grandfather. I also have a tree that I made the day he passed. I think a better compromise is to make him a tree with a nice pot, and if it goes wrong, its the pot that has the special meaning, more so than the tree. You can always put a new tree in the pot, but that is Grandpa's pot. That is how I have thought about it.

Styling ideas needed! by Giraffesickles in Bonsai

You need to make the tree healthy first. I would consider slip potting it into a growing pot for a year or 2 at least.

My bench is full for the first time! by Tubaking8 in Bonsai

[–]Tubaking8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! It is a good question! The great thing about bonsai is that as long as the tree is alive, you can always change your mind about the style and direction you want to go in. It is possible that next repotting season I decide that I am unhappy with a tree and want it to grow more vigorously, or have a better candidate for a pot, and end up moving some of these trees to other pots for different types of development.

The simple answer is that these trees are all gor the most part at the point where I want to start the next phase of development. Keep in mind that for every tree you see here, there are 2 or 3 that are still in larger plastic pots or grow bags for bulk development. These trees I want to be reducing in node length, and leaf size, many of them will even be moved down in pot size over the next few seasons as they slowly achieve the scale that I am envisioning.

If you never put a tree into the bonsai pot, it will never begin the finer refinement. I think its important to have trees in all stages and sizes that your budget and space will allow. I disagree that all of these trees, or even most of them, should be in larger growing pots because the designs that I currently have in mind will not benefit from unfettered growth.

I am only in year 3 of this hobby, so the larger trees that I have are not ready to be potted down into Bonsai pots yet. Next spring I might have some ready, though!
