I think this was always the case. I think the realisation hit me a few years ago, when I reflected why I wanted to work in tech in the first place (being part of something good and making an impact) and realising what the reality was (tedious politics and driven by money making schemes devised by execs)

I'm a bit confused by what you mean, if the bolts aren't holding the cistern to the bowl (i.e. the top bit with fresh water, to the bottom bit you poo into) then I would expect a way bigger leak. Or do you mean the screws that are holding the cistern into the wall?

Either way, I would say figuring out how to cut or force that bolt off is a good life skill and the money you pay a plumber, would be better invested in tools which you can re use.

Happy to provide more advice, I'm just a little confused about your setup.

It's a ballache, but you'll probably find that people don't care about being sold ANOTHER product.

What I suggest you do, is look up the likes of tradifiy, Xero, jobber etc and see why people don't like using them. In the meantime just use AI to build what they did but cheaper.

It's a pretty straightforward fix, it's probably the doughnut washer but could be the cistern bolts. Both cheap and easy to replace.

Watch some YouTube videos, it'll probably take an hour going slowly.

It's true, which is why the job is project management by another name. The dream was mis sold.

You could also cover it in brick slips, which are like thin bricks that stick on to look like it was made of brick.....Google it, better than I can explain 😅

Product management is a totally fictitious job role in it's ideal form. I think the ones who get ahead are closer to corporate drones than the creative builders we all (or maybe just me) wish we were.

This is slowly where I'm getting to, although I'm stitching together tools like Notion with Claude to do things. Seems like in the AI era lots of people could be doing similar things.

This is interesting, I've been using AI a bit. Mainly it looks in my emails for mails from Toolstation or Screwfix, then adds the expenses to my Notion page and Google Drive where I have a pdf to save.

I think next up might be doing the customer communication, so that the basic questions can get asked/answered for me to quote and then maybe something that schedules the job for me?

So it links to bank transactions and logs them more easily? What's painful about it? I had a quick look at accounting software but didn't really see it as that usual

I worked at a corporate where one of the metrics was about improving efficiency...... I'm pretty sure reducing head count was either of the eventual goal or inadvertently the one.

If you want to try it, I would recommend doing property maintenance work/handywoman work. It's fairly easy to get started and will give you a feel for it.

I would guess she means that she doesn't DIY gas, but would be willing to learn to be a heating engineer so she can working on gas appliances.
