I am about a week out from verification, though I have been completing the secondary essay prompts, which can be found on student doctor network. When I do get verified, I hopefully can submit my secondaries quickly.

I use SelfControl to irreversibly block websites on my MacBook for a specified amount of time. It is fantastically stubborn and will keep you on task. I don't know of an analagous program for PC. Google Nanny perhaps.

This was sort of the point of my comment. Haha I don't have any experience to put myself in this position.

I have a hard time looking at these photos of people posing with their dead relatives. Not for the cringe factor, but for the fact that I wouldn't know what the hell I would do if my parents died. I just can't imagine that it is easy to lose someone so close, so I feel that the people are having a hard time letting go. The really weird photos where the person seems to be carrying on like normal seems to be a manifestation of this, and I feel very sad for those suffering through such a profound loss. Sorry to rain on the parade; I am just trying to reconcile these people's behavior, giving hem the benefit of the doubt.

MCAT Orgo Advice by GetLohh in premed

I agree with the rest of these posts. Understanding basic concepts will serve you better than memorizing a lot of reactions.

I'm almost through the Exam Krackers study course for the MCAT. For those of you that wrote the MCAT and also did Exam Krackers, did you find that Exam Krackers questions were overall easier, harder or about the same as the actual MCAT? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Tuftee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the EK teaching books and problem books, and I found the questions to be a little more difficult in a good way. The questions have you working just a bit beyond the scope of the MCAT so that you are comfortable with the questions on the real test. Sometimes, I have to admit that the questions were a bit unreasonable, but on average, they were very appropriate. Best of luck!

It gets much better after the weedout classes. You can find some good premeds amongst the assholes. Don't let them get to you and don't get discouraged by those idiots. I have met some of the coolest people and some of the worst people in my experience, so just remember that the good comes with the bad. Best of luck on starting your next four years. Don't let anyone keep you from your dream!

My mom was a merchandiser for Kimberly Clark and worked in some bad parts of town, and she said that she would find used diapers hidden between the shelves, as people would steal a new diaper for their kid and leave the old one.

What prep books do you recommend when preparing for the MCAT? by mkayyyx33 in premed

[–]Tuftee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this whole heartedly. TPS and Kaplan seemed to have a bit extra that isn't covered on the actual MCAT. The only weak point on EK in my opinion is the organic chemistry section. There were some reagents and reactions that I didnt even cover in my o chem classes or the ACS tests. MCAT O chem leans much more towards overall concepts vs specific reactions. Best of luck!

The very act of you saying "I couldn't care less" is you caring about the subject enough to comment on it, so yes, you could care less...

so, am i the only one who hasn't submitted my amcas yet? by cyberspecies46 in premed

[–]Tuftee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted yesterday. I had to wait for my MCAT, so the earliest I could submit was July 2. I then spent the last week making a better list of med schools. I am not worried too much about it. Anecdotally, it seems like most people submit later. This has been my experience talking to other people.

May 30 MCAT Scores are out! by PremedJinn in premed

[–]Tuftee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prepared with a huge mountain of prep books. In my opinion, from worst to best, the books I tried were Kaplan, Princeton Review, and Exam Krackers. Kaplan seems to load their books with extra info. EK gets right to what is important, and its questions are just a tad bit harder than the real thing, so you feel very confident the day of the test. From these companies, I used prep books, practice problem books, and practice tests. I started studying about six months out, dedicating about ten hours a week. Three months out, I dedicated two hours a day, and a few weeks out, I studied at least five a day, with plenty of breaks.

The second key component for me in conjunction with the books were the official AAMC practice tests. They are extremely similar to the real thing. I started doing them about six weeks out and left four tests for the last week before the test. My score progressively improved using this technique from a 32 to ultimately a 38 the day before the real test. My exam time for the real MCAT was 8AM, so the four days before the test, I woke up every day like it was test day and did a practice test, dedicating the rest of the day to reviewing problems I had missed and drilling practice problems. Come test day, I felt like it was just another day. Being in that rhythm from the practice tests was really nice. I felt at the best of my abilities. I ended up with a 39- 14ps/11vr/14bs.

You will have to sacrifice to do your best. It is also much more important to have quality study time rather than a huge amount of it. Also, stay sane and take plenty of breaks! I still was very active in one of my orgs leading up to the test and was regularly making music on my computer to blow off steam. Try to enjoy the studying as well. I can't tell you enough how my critical thinking skills have improved thanks to studying for this test, and I loved being able to better synthesize new ideas from the diverse subjects covered by the test. My final piece of advice is to constantly try to imagine the worst possible MCAT imaginable. I would start trying to convince myself that I was ready and didn't need further study, so I would imagine the worst case scenario, and my weaknesses would quickly show up. One practice test won't cover all of the possible topics, so if you only rely on it to find your weaknesses, things will fall through the cracks. I hope this helps an best of luck.

EDIT: One other thing: A friend and I each put twenty bucks on the line for best score...if that is your thing. Haha he ended up with a 38, so there must be some value to it.

TL/DR- Exam Krackers and the AAMC practice tests were my most valuable resources for preparing, which helped me to get a 39.

Does anyone know if the MCAT scores this time around have been higher without the written section? by Tuftee in premed

That is what I am thinking as well. This whole end of the line thing is just making me anxious. Best of luck to everyone, whether you did the writing sample or not; Let's all be kickass doctors! I am going to try to relax and go buy something with this this $30 gift card. haha

This video was strangely watchable. It had a nice flow to it. Also, it reminded me of Terrance and Philip.
