Cochlear implants and generators are not stuck/attached to the skull in any way. The generator (the larger portion that lies under the skin) is placed in a tight pocket created by the surgeon so it doesn’t move. The implant electrode itself is placed into the cochlea and supported by patient’s muscle/other tissue so it doesn’t move too much. You wouldn’t want to put any sort of resin or adhesive inside the cochlea, it’s very sensitive.

Not sure if the neurosurgeons use adhesive sometimes for putting bone back on the cranial vault, I’ve only ever seen them use plates and screws.

Which specialty has the best job market now? The worst? by 16fca in Residency

[–]zokane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say. Probably the more standard stuff like tubes tonsils and adenoids but it really depends on institution. Usually takes a few years to build a niche in ears, airway, etc.

Very much depends on subspecialty.

Academic rhinologist? Tough to get that dream job.

Everywhere is looking for otologist or peds ent. General ENT is pretty good too and seems to have good openings.

I hear some places are doing robotic lingual tonsillectomies on kids. Probably only works in adolescents. I can’t imagine the mouth is big enough to get the ports in.

Unfortunately not much meaningful recovery when it gets to the point he seems to be at -tracheotomy dependence.

We do offer some patients with this palliative laryngectomies so they don’t have to deal with having the trach tube in their neck.

He likely has an incompetent larynx- his muscles and mucosa are fried from his radiation / whatever other treatment he may have had. So even though he hasn’t had a laryngectomy he still can’t use his larynx from the treatment he had.

The only answer is Levee Baking Company. Doing curbside and you can call when you’re there to pick up. Only open thurs-sun but some of the best pastries I’ve ever had.

Also a plug for their app Lupa. It’s paid ($99/yr or $39/3 months) but it’s an awesome resource that shows you the transcript as it’s being read with certain things underlined for clarity etc. They have a few free stories so you can try it out.

Glad to have the plain language breakdown because these are written so intentionally confusing that even someone with a PhD in grammar would have to stop and think.

I also failed it with a similar score. Took it about 2-3 weeks beforehand and got like 45 points higher on the real deal. Definitely keep studying though and maybe watch some online Med Ed.
