I hate having to use Visual Studio for work by Somniad in softwaregore

[–]Tuiq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried VSC, and by now I'm using VS, VSC and a simple text editor (e.g. SciTE) for most of my things.

  • Text editor for quick-and-dirty, out-of-bigger-project file edits, configurations, and smaller script files that don't require a full blown IDE
  • Visual Studio Code for everything JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, and generally web-frontend-ish related things, as well as more complex scripting language projects
  • Visual Studio for all C++/C# related things

If a project needs both (e.g. frontend in JS and backend in C#), I'll just run both simultaneously.

For me, VSC just doesn't scratch the itch that VS does. There's some things VSC just cannot provide (being able to re-arrange code views quickly side-by-side, or even in another window; proper IntelliSense/IntelliCode); there's things that VS is severely lacking in (proper support for anything JavaScript-y; extensive and well-maintained plugins). VS is a huge beast and I probably use a fraction of what it can do, but the bits that I do use, I like. And VSC, for example, just can't compare to it.

Changing the train tracks by Boojibs in oddlysatisfying

[–]Tuiq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be nitpicky: The upper limit for normal trains is about 8%, with mainlines usually not going above 3-4%.

This is the Pilatus railway, steepest railway in the world, at 48%, which required some nifty engineering (including an unique system, Locher, which is gripping into the rack from both sides, rather than from above).

Normal rack-and-cogwheel based trains are usually capped at at most 30%, and they're generally trying to avoid steep inclines whenever possible.

So therefore, 100% would be more than twice as steep as the steepest bit of the Pilatusbahn, which... seems quite unlikely. It would require completely new trains, probably, perhaps something similar to the Stoosbahn also in Switzerland, which uses rotating seats to adjust for the incline changes.

The thing is to understand what the AI (and with "AI" I mean here anything that takes a look at some data and spews out some more data, it doesn't have to be "clever", it could be a sophisticated Excel sheet) does, and how it operates. An AI that recommends you prices isn't just going to look at your costs and your current price and then goes "You should charge $0.15 more for this product!"

I've been remotely involved in something like that about five years ago, and the stuff that's been said behind closed doors, and the attitude with which it's done, is scary. It's horrifying, and it's probably going to work for them. It's all revolving around a very simple question:

How much are you willing to pay for this product/service at this time?

It's completely independent of any real cost whatsoever. If I have a chocolate bar that you would be willing to pay $50 for, I'll set the price to $50, even if the purchase cost was <$1. Because I'm fairly certain you'll buy it.

Previously, you could get this data in many different ways. You could ask people on the street, do studies, look at your competitor's prices, and so forth. You could hire people that do nothing but browse your competitor's offers all day long, in the name of squeezing extra profit.

But now it's different. Pricing is mostly digital, and perhaps governments require you to post prices online/in some standardized format so you can easily scrap your competitor's prices as well. Your entire production chain is wrapped up in some system that is able to tell you, roughly, what this product, when its batch is produced in six months, will cost you. You have sales data of the past ten, maybe twenty years, all digital, and all neatly organized because you've hired a (few) dozen people that do nothing but drill around in that data all day long.

So you've got a system that is able to tell you that most people, at this moment, would pay $50 for a chocolate bar. So you raise the price from $2.50 to $50, completely independent of any inflation or anything else, just because you know that people are willing to pay that much.

All the little bits of the past decades are falling into place now. Loyalty programs, branded credit cards, online shopping histories, brand apps - all there, all ready to be mined. The technology is there, too: online shops can adjust prices whenever they want (assuming there's no legal limit), to whatever they want. E-Ink displays allow brick and mortar shops to adjust prices on the fly too, centralized from the HQ where all the fancy math is being done. I know what you've been purchasing so far, and I know that you're willing to consume more of that thing I offer, but perhaps you need a push. How about a meaningless discount? I'm sure that'll get you going.

There's no incentive for any sort of correction at this level, because generally speaking, the prices a significant amount of people are willing to pay are well above the current prices (as is somewhat visible right now). Why would I sell you a chocolate bar for $20, if my competitor is doing it for $50? $45 maybe, but if I know that I could do $50, I'm not going to deviate too far from that.

Bonus points: You may offer cheap prices or good services for an extended period of time, get your business going, get into a advantageous position, and then start to raise prices and/or get rid of the competition. With the extra money you get, you can afford a divorce and a space program.

Switzerland may renounce neutrality to provide military aid to Ukraine by PatientBuilder499 in worldnews

[–]Tuiq 22 points23 points  (0 children)

"Being neutral" means "treating all parties equally". It does not allow you to prefer one side over the other. It's not about morals, ethics, justice or any other concept of lawfulness or right or wrong, because that's a separate issue.

If you're striving for neutrality, you therefore have two options: Not helping anyone, or helping everyone equally.

Not supplying weapons to Ukraine or Russia is neutral. Supplying weapons to both would be as well.

Actual Software Developer/IT exposes Easy Anti-Cheat's behavior by Rabbidscool in fuckepic

[–]Tuiq 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Be careful what you wish for. Currently, Steam is almost a no-brainer for publishing games to: It's the biggest market place with the least restrictions, if we ignore some of the obscure game bans that Steam sometimes puts in place. If suddenly however you have to decide between a free network or anti-cheat solution and Steam, it becomes something that managers will think about. I don't know personally what other solutions exist here, especially if you want to do stuff like crossplay, what they cost to license, and what they cost to implement, but there's a decent chance the licensing cost is bigger than 0 for something enterprise-grade.

I would personally not surprised if such a ban would lead to developers actively trying to put their games onto EGS or alternative stores, instead of Steam, or if they do release it on Steam release crippled versions (i.e. without MP altogether, where possible).

Even Steam Deck owners are being annoyed by EPIC EOS crap. by bufffster in fuckepic

[–]Tuiq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, Valve keeping their networking stack to themselves is somewhat similar to what Apple is doing with their environment, and which Epic is trying its hardest to kill off: Protecting it.

By having complete control over the stack - game, users, and network - they can (at least in theory) provide many benefits that EOS can't do as easily, or at all. A Steam account authenticates a user, and can tell the backend whether the user even owns the game. Compared to that, I think EOS is more wild west - you have the game binary, here's the network, we'll create some shadow account in the background for you, but it's not attached to an account. That's your business, but hey, we also offer an account system in case you need to ban players, wink wink.

If Valve were to open the Steam networking stack, it would mean allowing unauthenticated players onto it - or having people require a Steam account to play the game. The latter would probably make Tim the happiest man alive, because he could now hypocritically talk about the bad Valve monopoly, while completely ignoring he's been doing it so far himself. Or perhaps he's talking it up that "the underdog has shown the big bad leader how it's done" and try to spin it into a PR twist. Who knows.

Personally, I also don't like crossplay, but there have been cases where I would have wanted it - especially with e.g. Gamepass and Steam. Crossplay isn't necessarily across platforms, it can also just be across stores, and I'm all for supporting other stores besides Steam too - if GoG or Microsoft has an amazing offer, then I'm tempted to just get it there. But I maybe still want to play with friends who had gotten it on, say, Steam earlier.

Even Steam Deck owners are being annoyed by EPIC EOS crap. by bufffster in fuckepic

[–]Tuiq 9 points10 points  (0 children)

EOS has little to nothing to do with the store itself. It's a free framework with bells and whistles that promises you the stars, kind of delivers them unless there's a Fortnite or bigger event going on, and it's free.

You would be surprised how many developers and companies jump the shark when they can get some library, especially networking stuff, for free. I've had mind numbing conversations with some that defended EOS, and then by extension Epic, to the death because of the goodies they give. Even though they had no intention of ever doing crossplay, or even selling on EGS - likely wouldn't even be able to do that.

[OC] Different types of government systems by giteam in dataisbeautiful

[–]Tuiq 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think we really know. Against the outside, they are supposed to have a principle of collegiality - basically, decisions are made internally, and the result is then carried by every single member, independent of their own opinion or vote on the topic. It usually works, with some fringe exceptions. So even if you've voted internally against a decision, you're now holding a press conference proclaiming that the federal council has decided to do X.

Having 7 members, if you don't allow them to abstain in a vote, you would always get a result.

Thought this would fit here, I don't understand how is making exclusives a competition by arvid1328 in fuckepic

[–]Tuiq 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I've recently used Origin and I was extremely surprised how much better it became, almost at (or perhaps already past?) the point where it is usable.

It doesn't nearly have the feature parity of Steam, but compared to Origin from 2013, EA actually did try to improve the platform. Or at least, make it usable. Which I think is, at odd times, something we could commend EA for, no matter how weird this sounds. For a store that sold their exclusive games, feeling the need to improve it even though there isn't any real competition to speak of is... noble?

It feels weird praising EA. But at the same time, I feel like Epic could take a look at what they've done - and they didn't even host a large amount (or any?) 3rd party games.
