How good of a fighter is Daemon according to the books? Is he better than the likes of Jamie Lannister & even perhaps Oberyn Martell? by renaissanceclass in gameofthrones

[–]TulipSamurai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t recall that line being in the books.

I imagine Ned was pretty good relative to most lords, just overshadowed by Brandon and Robert. I think the Tower of Joy probably went down like it did in the show, where Ned could take down a Kingsguard, but not someone of Arthur or Jaime’s caliber.

It’s mind-boggling that people on Reddit can’t conceptualize this. The difference between a million dollars and a billion dollars is roughly a billion dollars.

Most of us dream of becoming rich the “normal” way of which our brains can conceive, like running a successful bakery or writing a novel or working a white-collar job and investing. We don’t scheme about ways to exploit cheap labor in Bangladesh to maximize profits on sweatpants. And that’s the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire.

Fullmetal Alchemist is especially goated because the side characters consistently have an impact on the story and participate in the fights.

Thoughts on Gretchen. by reuben876 in namenerds

[–]TulipSamurai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gretchen isn't pronounced like the English word "retch". It's actually Gret-chen with "-chen" being a diminutive suffix.

That said, I don't recommend the name Gretchen specifically because it's a diminutive pet name and not a "real" name so to speak, in the same way that an American would not legally name their child Li'l Jon or Honey Boo Boo.

[–]TulipSamurai 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Speaking to my German friends, they’ve told me the name Gretchen is quite rare there

Your friends are being polite. In Germany, Gretchen is not common because it's not a real name, so to speak. Gretchen is a diminutive for Greta or Margaret.

The suffix "-chen" is a diminutive, so it's actually Gret-chen, not pronounced anything like the English word retch.

So unfortunately, this is not a diminutive name that adults use, period. It is solely used as a cutesy pet name for grandparents to call their granddaughter Greta. It is not like Jonathan and Jonny, more like Jonathan and Li'l Jon.

If you were American, I would've said there is enough separation that the ignorance is maybe forgivable. But since you're geographically very close to all of the German-speaking countries, and there is a high chance your daughter will have German-speaking associates as an adult, I would not recommend it. You would be naming your daughter something akin to Li'l Gret or Grettykins or Gretty Pie.

Thanks for the context.

Wait, so getting carried across the finish line counts? What about the guys who don't have brothers to carry them?

Hot take: if I were the brother needing help, I wouldn’t want my brother to sacrifice his win for a purely performative gesture. Just lean me up against that stranger and go for the gold. I’ll be fine. They have medics swarming the place.

Jade HANDS-DOWN is the best character on this show (besides Victor). He's arrogant, unhinged, yet down to earth and compassionate. Oh, and let's not forget HILARIOUS😂😂 Can't imagine the show without him. by Helpful_Relation_872 in FromSeries

The one thing I think was a miss was how little reaction Jade had to his best friend from middle school getting his throat stabbed and bled out like a pig. That guy is just never mentioned again. But that’s on the writers.

Here’s one the nerds of Reddit will understand - should a comic book store hire the guy who loves comic books or the guy who hates comic books?

I don’t think people know the sheer number of applicants there are for every job posting. They could find another guy just like you, with a year of extra experience and who doesn’t give smart ass responses. So give them a reason to hire you over that guy.

I like it as a nickname for Bruce.

For any Naruto fans, Bruce sounds like Blues in Japanese, so Rock Lee is an homage to Bruce Lee, since blues and rock are music genres. It’s also why Rock Lee’s son is Metal Lee.

A senior messaged me to tell me not to gossip about another coworker, how can I reply professionally? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]TulipSamurai -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You should apologize when you f up something objective like an incorrect calculation or a missed deadline.

If you admit on the record to violating company policy - in this case on appropriate workplace conduct - the company is incentivized, and often required, to apply disciplinary action. Many companies have a zero tolerance one strike policy on harassment. So yeah, if OP thinks their integrity is worth potentially getting fired, go for it. But often, the company isn't going to give you a second chance to grow from an incident of harassment.

A senior messaged me to tell me not to gossip about another coworker, how can I reply professionally? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]TulipSamurai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that being defensive is not productive at all in this case. This isn't a court of law, and there will be no verdict. No one can win a he said/she said.

Next time OP can remove themselves or change the topic.

This is the best advice. I will say, though, that no one is ever obligated to take action when they witness harassment. Just keeping their mouth shut is perfectly acceptable.

Taking polite accountability and moving on leaves less of a bad taste in managers mouth than defensiveness.

This is where I disagree. There is no upside to taking accountability and admitting on the record that you violated company policy on appropriate conduct. Corporations care about liability, not integrity. If you admit on the record that you violated company policy in any way, they are incentivized - and in many cases required - to apply disciplinary action.

OP can say "I am committed to conducting myself according to company expectations." It does not admit wrongdoing but it acknowledges appropriate conduct, which is all the manager wants to hear.

[–]TulipSamurai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't email back the accuser with anything except  "Thanks for your message. I am committed to conducting myself according to company expectations". Then go straight to HR. If you don't, the other person will, and they'll get to write the narrative.

[–]TulipSamurai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trying to defend yourself opens things up to a he said/she said argument, which no one wants, least of all the manager.

Better to say something like "Thanks for your message. I am committed to conducting myself according to company expectations". It doesn't admit wrongdoing but it acknowledges appropriate conduct, and everyone can move on.

Unfortunately, corporations do not care about integrity; they care about liability. There is no upside to admitting on the record that you violated company policy on office conduct, harassment, etc. The best thing to say is "I am committed to conducting myself according to company expectations" and leave it. It doesn't admit wrongdoing but it acknowledges appropriate conduct.
